Sound Devices MixPre 10T Timecode Setup

How do you set up timecode on a MixPre-10T? Let's take a look at free run timecode on the 10T where the 10T is the master clock.

    Very glad you made this video! I signed up for the MixPre course over on LearnLightandSound.com and it really helped me a lot, but I'm really glad to see you adding some additional content pertaining specifically to MixPre-10T users like me. I knew you would LOL And I have the same setup in the video, with the Tentacle Sync E, which I found very easy to get set up for the first time without having any previous experience, other than being one of Curtis Judd's "Soundies". With that said, I was watching this video going "Yeah yeah yeah I figured all this out on my own..." Until you got to the part about checking the sync using the BNC "In" jack and then I was like "Ahhhh..." so I'm very glad I watched it. You learn something new every day. Thank you Curtis.

    Curtis you are the best. I'm looking to setup a Sound Devices 833 as the TC generator and use a few sync boxes in the way you described in this video. Is this correct? Or do you have a different video explaining the way to do that on a 833?

    I hope you don't mind my question. I am using Grass Valley Edius as an editing software. Here is the issue. I have two Tentacle E devices that I attached to my GH5 and Sony A7III. I am also just started to use MixPre 10T. All devices are in perfect sync. I shot a test footage and trans-coded the footage using Tentacle Timecode Tool (windows version). everything lined up perfectly except for external audio file recorded from MixPre 10T. The file is there with the timecode, I can see it but it's not beeing transferred in synchronized fashion like everything else.

    Hello Curtis, thanks a lot for your video, I'll check the other ones but i've just one question : do you set the Tentacle on "mic" or "line" to send the TC of the mixpre to the Tentacle ? I've tested and it appears that it works on both cases, what do you suggest ? I know that to go to the camera through BNC, I set the Tentacle to LINE. Thanks for your help !

    Curtis, thanks for all the great videos. Ok my mix pre 6, no matter what I do, I get a 16 DIFF. I’ve double check the date on the mix pre and Tentacle, I checked the GMT in time set etc etc. I’m not sure if it matters but I have a suspicion that something just isn’t right. When I jam TC to my Tentacle I can see the aux 1 running and the internal and they are synced. But the DIFF is 16:00:00:00:00 - any notion about this? It’s driving me nuts. Unless I’m just not comprehending things correctly. Thanks in advance.

    Hi Good video. I learned a lot. Is it possible to sync Mixpre-6 with Mixpre-10T? Thanks

  • @curtisjudd

    @curtisjudd

    5 жыл бұрын

    Yes, you can use an adapter cable to run timecode out of the 10T's BNC timecode output to the 3.5mm input on the MixPre-6 and change the settings in the 6's menu to timecode input. If you go this route, you'll need to keep the timecode cable connected to both devices throughout the shoot. If you cannot keep them connected, then you'll need a timecode generator like the Tentacle Sync E which you'll jam sync to the 10T and then connect it to the 6 throughout the shoot. I hope that helps.

    Hi, Curtis. At 5:59, when you compare the internal (MixPre) TC with that of the Tentacle Sync E, there appears to be a slight visual difference between the two running values, and if you pause the video, the two values appear to be at least one frame apart. What's going on here? Thanks for all of your great videos-I'll be enrolling for some of your online classes for sure!

    Hi klajdi9999, I haven't worked with the Alexa Mini first hand so I'm not sure, but you'll need a cable with TA3F connectors on one end and whatever the Alexa Mini requires on the other end. Then you'd use a process like this to calibrate the audio levels: kzread.info/dash/bejne/lKeJx7qtqNbHZZM.html

    Hi Curtis. Love your videos. I have a question about timecode on the 10T: can I simply run a cable from the timecode-out BNC on the 10T directly to the camera, without using a tentacle-sync?

    @@curtisjudd Thank you! Very interesting. So: the notion, on which the entire concept of the Tentacle-Sync rests, is that cameras on their own do not have accurate enough internal timecode to be reliable? In other words, if I were to generate timecode with my 10T, and simply sync my camera's clock to the timecode on the 10T (and then disconnect the cable), is the idea that the camera will go out of sync really quickly? Or rather: is there some distinction between a device which has "timestamps" and one which "generates accurate timecode" that I am not appreciating here? Thanks for all you do!

    @@brendanyoungquist3531 Correct, cameras will drift at varying rates, but none of them use temperature compensated crystal oscillator clocks so they all drift. You have to keep a proper timecode box attached through the duration of the shoot if you want to rely on syncing with timecode and not having to "tweak" and compensate for drift in post.

    Hi Curtis, thank you for your tremendous work here. It's been really really helpful to make great investment decisions and to simply learn new tricks and knowledges. I might just have one little question on this one: around 8:00 I don't get why you transform the BNC In connector into a Ref/Sync In connector... if you're sending an LTC signal into it. It would make sens only if, in this case, the MixPre 10 would use the incoming LTC signal to get a TC info AND a Ref/Sync reference. Is that what it does ? In that case, that would be quiet powerful because I thought it would need two cables (one LTC and one Ref/Sync) to do so.

  • @curtisjudd

    @curtisjudd

    Hi Thomas, In that part, we use the Timecode Systems Wave as the master clock. We do that because it sends timecome to the 10T and also simultaneously wirelessly re-jams all of the remote timecode generators every second. If we were to use the timecode output from the 10T, the Wave base station would need to be setup as a slave rather than master unit, I believe. May need to double check that. But the idea is for the Wave base station to be the master timekeeper and send timecode to the 10T and all of the wirelessly connected Ultra Sync One TC generators. I hope that makes sense.

  • @tchatelet

    @tchatelet

    Hi, thanks for your answer. Sorry, my question wasn't clear at all... I understood you wanted the :wave to be the master clock and rule over the 10T... I was just talking about the set up you described to do so. Switching the Sync Ref option from "Internal" to "BNC in", and sending into it an LTC signal from the :wave sounds like you're just sending an LTC signal into a Ref/Sync input. How does it rule over the running Timecode of 10T? To me, it should take two cables/signals to rule over the speed (via the Ref/Sync input) and the time writing (via a TC input) of a device and be completely in sync, with no drift possible. Unless the particular setup you described is a specific one and the 10T is really able to sync its speed and time writing with just one LTC signal if the BNC in input is set to "Sync Ref". Is it really the case? Because if it is, it's a powerful feature!

  • @curtisjudd

    @curtisjudd

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@tchatelet Hi Thomas, it is my understanding that when you set the MixPre's timecode mode to BNC In or Aux In, it continuously reads from an external timecode generator connected to that port. Disconnecting the external TC generator resets the MixPre's TC clock to 00:00:00:00 and when you reconnect the external TC generator, it picks up the LTC timecode again. So it appears to be reading continuously from the external source.
