Sound Deadener - Before & After Comparison
This is a short video detailing the sound comparison before and after installing sound deadening (acoustic treatment) into my 76 Series Cruiser.

You say it's dropped it by 'only' 5 dB however remember that decibel scale is log 10 so you've effectively reduced the sound inside by a factor of 5!! Nice work!

Thanks again mate. Awesome video. I reckon that car builders should give you a cut, i have just ordered a kit =D
Good video mate, I have just done the front and rear doors, rear quarter panels and boot floors and it has made a massive difference. My next plans are to somehow slightly bend in the drivers and passenger door frames to stop that pesky wind noise as the door vibrates at speed.

Yeah nice one mate! I didn't even think about doing that! Do you have a GXL or a workmate? You could literally just keep going if you could afford to buy heaps of boxes haha. I totally reckon the three boxes I put in are worth it though!
@h3dfx
6 жыл бұрын
Defo worth it mate!!!! I have a 2014 GXL, you can basically stick your fingers up between the inside body and the door as you drive and feel the door flexing. I did try some Ebay door trim that was sorta of shaped like a "D" if you can imagine it (hard to explain) to see if that would work when the door was closed but had no luck so through doing some investigating I see some people have yanked on the top of the door and bent it in and had success. Windows would have to be down and it would only have to be a slight adjustment but seems like it makes sense to me :) Like you said, you don't want to add to much weight so doing the doors alone is a big improvement over standard!
Thanks for the two videos mate, really good info and honesty there. I've been debating whether to do this or not, you leave no question now! If I can ask, is that a Toyota head unit from a different model?
@4wdAdventure
6 жыл бұрын
razbarb thanks mate, the head unit is from VMS, who do navigation GPS software. I wouldn’t buy it again though. Probably get one of the next Kenwood headunits witg apple car play or something.
That's awesome. I guess I'm gonna have to do this at some point now. How much did it cost ya all up?

95db is seriously loud for a vehicle at cruise. Between 30min-1hr before hearing damage occurs.
@4wdAdventure

Very loud vehicles with thin panels; plus when you add bar-work, loud exhaust and roofrack that creates huge amounts of wind noise it becomes excessive!
God job mate
nice rig
I have a Japanese import in the UK with a 2.4 turbo. Really need some sound deadening! Maybe I can drive above 60mph/100kph without ear defenders then!!
By far the prettiest offroader out there. Toyota should be smart and do a new version of this similar to what mercedes is doing with the new G class. All coils, comfy interior and maybe even an IFS version :D

Thanks Oscar, I have 2x Sony 6x9 speakers in the wagon, 2x Sony 6” speakers in the rear doors, 2x Sony 6” speakers in the front doors, 2x Sony 4” speakers in the dash and a 10” MTX sub in wedge box (to suit the angle of the rear bench seat in the back). I have rewired all the speakers with new thicker gauge speakers cable. All 4 door speakers and the sub are running off a 500w Sony amp under the back seat powered off the ignition. And the rear 6x9s and dash 4” speakers are powered from the headunit - this is so I can have music playing while the car isn’t running and I’m not worried about extra speakers/sub and amp draining the battery. The headunit is a VMS in dash GPS which fits the space. I would recommend getting a newer unit with Apple CarPlay support and just using google maps through your device. The VMS is old technology now. Hope that’s helps!!
everyone needs to remember decibels are on a logarithmic scale so 5db would be a 50% drop in perceived loudness if not more

Thanks for the educational comment! It’s a massive drop, I found it made a huge difference. It was the best measurements I could take using a phone under similar circumstances from the multiple test drives. Would be good to have been able to measure it with a calibrated instrument
Bit off topic but what snorkel you using?

Wytch Hunter it’s a custom 4” stainless steel snorkel but powder coated matte black. Got it from CAM Fabrications. Found them on Facebook.

Didn't the doors just do another 1-2 db but the stuff you did first did about 5 db?

BruceTheSillyGoose $150 per door near my house in Atlanta, looking to do it my self
will it work for compact / kei car?
Great in depth vid buddy. Has it altered the sound quality of the speakers? Sound waves need a solid surface to bounce off the get the full acoustics. It’s my only concern of putting it inside the door. I hear it’s better on the door panel to stop the sound wave penetration but speakers still push good sound out.

Hey mate, sorry about the late reply - I missed this comment! Interesting! Would definitely be an good thing to compare; I think it’s made the whole shell of the cruiser a lot more “deadened” but the improved listenability to music in general is GREAT; solely from having significantly less road noise inside the cab and not having to drown the road noise out by turning the stereo up. Can now actually hear the music a lot better without having to crank it up if that makes sense!
@MrKeenaz

@@4wdAdventure it does. Thanks for the reply buddy.
Have you thought about removing the wheel arch liners and placing the mass insulation on the external wheel arches then replacing the liners - to reduce accoustic effect if you can stop the sound hitting the drum (metal skin) then it won't be transmitted into the vehicle. Basically place the accoustic liner between the noise and the skin of the vehicle....
@4wdAdventure
2 жыл бұрын
Hey mate thanks for the comment - I didn’t think about that one! It’s one of those things that you could just keep going with, I am happy with the dampening effect that has been achieved so far. If I was building again I would do the whole firewall as well.
Get yourself some mass loaded vinyl, makes a massive difference.

Did you apply any to your engine bay?
@4wdAdventure
3 жыл бұрын
Nah the engine bay on the cruiser is so jam packed it’s almost inaccessible. It would be possible, but I never looked into it!
removing the interior exhaust noise would be the best part on my 70 series the exhaust was the most annoying part was so loud and droney
How much do you think the total weight is that you added in deadening?
@4wdAdventure
3 жыл бұрын
Exactly 18kg - 6kg per pack
If you don't need them, taking the snorkel and rack off will reduce your sound and improve fuel economy. If you need them though, keep them there. Smoother tires and lowering the vehicle will also help.
So after all this time how well did it help with keeping heat out in summer and heat in in the winter
@4wdAdventure
3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question. I don’t really have any measurable data in regards to temperatures. I think the dark tint plays a big part in keeping the cab cool in summer. I definitely noticed a different in temperature coming from the trans-tunnel and with less heat emanating from around the gearstick into the foot wells. I guess adding any extra insulation would help with temperature retention, but I find the aircon unit in the landcruiser very efficient in all conditions anyway.
@Tacpew

@@4wdAdventure well I went ahead and did it in my floors, doors and roof as well and i can tell from owning so many jeeps that it holds heat a lot more now than it ever did before and that the heat from the trans tunnel is now hardly there

How can you get an accurate reading.... you keep talking over the meter..
@4wdAdventure
5 жыл бұрын
I was only talking the short time while it was being filmed. The sound meter was on the whole drive at the same speed and driving conditions and that was all being recorded too. Obviously never going to get perfect conditions for audio recording or a decimal point accurate reading on sound difference; was just trying to give everyone a rough ball park figure of acoustic improvement
