Thanks for the excellent dB test comparison. I was shocked at -10dB!! However pleased for you. Imagine if you did every surface you could (I know that is A LOT of time spent), doing doors, bonnet, wheel wells...under car spraying if you are super keen and roof. Love your vette by the way, not a lot of these in Australia. The exhaust sounds "Gruffer", if there is such a word. 👍

On such a car, which I also owned and experimented with, the biggest difference in road noise reduction comes from: 1. Adding additional 3M rubber strip insulation to 2 doors, hatch and hood, to drastically reduce ingress of exterior noise. 2. Spraying multiple layers of rubberized undersealant to entire undercarriage + 4 wheel fender areas. 3. Underhood noise insulation.

great review; a decibel meter doesn't lie, though neither do ears. 6-10dba is great, I dig that. The thing I heard was, as you mentioned, the tonal quality change of the exhaust; it seems one would get fatigued very quickly. This helps illustrate why so many people in the forums are having less than stellar luck getting the "tomb-like" sound. Sound damping & isolation, or lack thereof is design choice & one best applied in house. Why car companies don't consider the health & wellbeing of consumers, in this respect, is beyond me. I'm looking at you #Honda

Hi guy - Good video. Another big noise maker on many Corvettes is their run-flat tires. They also cost twice the price of normal tires and are 25% heavier. Replace those and consider a not-so-loud exhaust system to further quiet down the beast.

Butyl based deadeners are better for bass because they add weight to panels reducing flex and rattle. What you really need is closed cell foam with mass loaded vinyl on top, it weighs almost nothing but its thick so it blocks out a lot ofsound. I use all 3 in my car .

Did you only do the floor pan and trunk? I wonder how much quieter it would be if you also did the doors, roof, and front firewall. I’d like to install a straight cut gearbox in my car someday and I don’t want to hear it until I roll the windows down

  • @AzraelIgnis

Dynamat works. I've used it in every single car I've owned since 2004. It will filter out a lot of the road noises, especially the higher pitch sounds. However it's not a cure all product. Most of the road noise sounds actually come from your windows. One of my biggest complaints when I owned a 2015 Dodge Charger was the heat from transmission. Tearing down the interior I noticed that dodge put some effort into sound deadening already with thick carpet and specific spots with a cheaper version of sound deadening stickers.. However, It just wasn't enough. I did a cover all and it cut down my db down about 8-9 decibels . I would say a significant impact overall. Ceramic tint can also help with road noise and heat.

The day I traded in the charger the sales guy was impressed. He noticed a difference right away and asked if I had done something to the car because he drives chargers all day long and mine was much quieter than normal. I told him I used dynamat in the interior. (I installed it myself) and had a local install 400$ ceramic tint. I ended up getting 17k for the trade vs the original offer of 15k. Not sure what they sold it for because I don't live in that state anymore. But that 900$ investment helped secure me some peace of mind. I drive an Acura TL now that I paid cash for but haven't installed any dynamat yet.

Ceramic tint reduces noise? Haven't heard of that. I have a 2018 charger I'm about to get ceramic tinted, back when my wife drove it she skipped appointments to get it done, now the paneling is coming unglued bad, especially this year. I'm about to get three vehicles ceramic tinted, including my 2002 Chevy Tahoe that I'm putting a quality system in that's been fully rebuilt mechanically and it's getting sound treated. It's lifted and has load tire noise.

Oh and there's a reason why luxury cars have thicker glass. Cheaper the vehicle, thinner the glass. Almost wonder if one could put strips of deadener on it to take some sound out.

I think that the noise would be a lot different with the knocking coming from the underside. Mini the the material you're knocking on and you're listening on the same side. With the knocking or noise coming from the other side then it has to pass through the material. But that's not easy to test I understand

High way bunch mark it all, 86-88 to 76-78 = 10 dB diff It was 10dB difference, which is impersetive. 3dB reduction mean half the power delivered to the microphone sensor. So, 10 dB means more than 9 dB which is 3*3dB. Therefore a factor of 2^3=8. So, the noise reduction now is divided by 8. That is the noise now is 1/8th of the noise before the insulation.

CLD (constraint layer dampers like Dynamat, Damplifier, etc) really only needs partial coverage (25%) to deaden all the metal/panels. CCF (closed cell foam like DynaLiner, Overkill, etc) is for stopping rattles of trim that vibrates. MLV (mass loaded vinyl like Dynapad, Luxury Liner, etc) is for the floor from the firewall/footwell on back and it will make the vehicle much quieter. Although you got results of lower noise, you may have went about it with the wrong product as far as Dynamat goes. That's a whole lot of unnecessary weight and $$$. MLV is heavy as well, but less Dynamat plus MLV might be a wash as far as weight and $$$ goes but it should provide much better results. All the companies that make these products (CLD, CCF, MLV) for sound control detail all the uses for this stuff on their websites. The except may be Dynamat which appears to push the 'more is better' concept for their CLD. See this video for a better explanation... kzread.info/dash/bejne/hoWptJWxaKnKYKw.html

How many layers / how thick can you make your floor? im working on a ford diesel van right now. i have 2 layers of dynamat extreme. i have either 1/4 inch dynaliner or 1/2 inch dynaliner to put down. i would like to add 1/2 inch dynapad to this. Good stuff just I wouldn't pay big bucks for big name brands. I did my mistake long time ago and bought dynamat but if you get farther into the sound system you can actually find this deadener called vibraflex 190 mil. Your ride will get heavier by adding this so I wouldn't suggest doing that in a fast car. Also soundskin and second skin products are much affordable then dynamat and they take you into a different game zone that you will never look back into dynamat.

More than half your noise is going to be coming from the firewall and on all vehicles it's nearly impossible but the best application is to get that Dynamite all the way up to the bottom of the front windshield. And that's pretty much impossible. Also if your center console continues to be hot pulled off flip over spray foam the bottom of it

Ive learned a lot after watching the Car Audio Fabrication channel (check out his door video) and think your un-dampened doors are the reason why your car doesn't sound better then a luxury car which is a shame after spending all that effort. Maybe do the firewall and roof as well because that is the only thing left without deadening.
