    I know this video is several years ago, but to assist others, a more common approach with setting up channels if the room is occupied, is to leave the main slider down instead of moving it up first. The SOLO (PFL, Cue on other brands) sends the channel before the slider to the headphones AND the meter. You can sound check the channel, EQ it, balance it, adjust it with the send into the stage monitor, and then add it to the mains. Prevents a real hot channel from causing feedback in the main if something is way out in the gain. USE HEADPHONES and SOLO with the METERS to get the inputs all relatively even. Prepare to repeat the process once the band plays as the band members are generally louder once the performance starts. A good band will give performance level sound for the sound check instead of just spoken "check" or "test". Prep your performers to sound check at performance levels. The AUX sends masters on the right have SOLO buttons too, so nominal 0 vu levels can be adjusted to the on stage monitors, recording equipment, broadcast if you broadcast live, and the ADA hearing transmitter. Pro tip. I start with playback of recorded material in a stereo channel and set all aux sends to nominal 0 vu using solo. Do the same for the groups, and finally the mains. If needed, set the PA for your music performance sound levels on the amps for the mains, and any on stage wedges. Then DON'T touch them. When during the program you send 0 vu to these devices, the levels are correct for all recording, ADA, broadcast, stage wedges, mains, etc. Be sure to PFL, CUE, SOLO depending on board brand the pastor, but remember he generally is not going do do the prayer at concert levels. The reason to trim him at 0vu in a channel is for proper levels for the recording, broadcast, and ADA hearing assist. Be sure when bringing his slider up into the mains, don't push it to unity, Proper level will be between -10 to -20 on the slider for items like prayer, communion, etc. into the mains. If your pastor if a fire a brimstone person they may wish higher levels. Adjust as needed in the mains. Remember at performance levels to keep him at 0vu in the solo meter for the channel and into the associated aux sends. If it is requested for a small amount of the pastor to be in the wedges, again, set the pastor aux send into the monitors lower as this is not competing with the band.

    I agree that it's best to set gain before raising your faders. What I show is a quick and dirty method that I find is easier for beginners to handle. Your suggestions are the preferred method, and if I were to do it again, I would instruct listeners to adjust gain before faders and mix on faders.

    I was told years ago, the first thing you do is to plug in your microphone into the mic input, next you depress the PFL (Pre Fader Listening) switch for that channel , then you speak into the microphone while monitoring the meter level and you adjuast the Gain knob until the meter level L and R reaches Zero. Is my understanding incorrect?

    Yes, assign the keyboard and the drums to different subs, send everything else directly to mains, and then send the sub to the mains. That should do it.

  • @AndrewBellous

    Yeah, it's an issue of education. It's hard, because it feeds into the musicality and confidence of the people you're working with. Those who aren't confident in their musical ability cover it up by turning things up too loud as a security blanket. Simply telling them to stop doesn't address the deeper issues. I know I like my monitor louder when it's a song I'm not familiar with or I'm having a bad day. It takes real patience to find the right level for that person on that day. If someone is really struggling, then in-ear monitors can give them all the monitor they need without affecting anyone else.

  • @ramoncotto7586

    @ramoncotto7586

    Hi Chris, What I find that works is to reposition the monitor so most of the sound faces that individual. Also, if you raise the monitor closer to ear level if possible, you will not need to raise the volume as high. Position and angle are extremely important.

    I take audio out on mixer as line input to PC for recording, when I press PFL to adjust during live performance and it recorded that channel only. Do you know how I can avoid this?

  • @AndrewBellous

    @AndrewBellous

    3 жыл бұрын

    There are a number of potential audio outputs. I'm guessing that the audio output you selected to use was the headphone jack. If that was the output you used, then it would make sense that it isolated the single channel. The better option would be to use an auxiliary channel for your recording, but without more specific information, it's hard to comment intelligently.

    How would you go about drum bus compression without using 2 more channels? I have a 1604 16 so tracks are limited. Just setup a left(aux1) and right(aux2) and send all drums to that? I assume you just adjust the send return knobs as sliders? Also that throws it right to the master right? Can’t route it anywhere.

  • @AndrewBellous

    @AndrewBellous

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yes, that should work. Another approach would be to use a Sub for that, which would give you fader control. You'd use the subs to send to the compressor and come back through 2 channels, but that would eat up channels you probably need for other things.

  • @AndrewBellous

    @AndrewBellous

    TRS can be stereo or balanced. TS is mono. A TRS to TS converter will cancel the second audio channel, which in the case of a stereo signal will be the Right stereo channel and in the case of a balanced signal, it will cancel the inverted audio signal used to clean out interference. However, you shouldn't need the adapter. Most modern audio interfaces will automatically cancel out the second signal if they accept a mono signal. The real problem you need to worry about is when you have a balanced output and the input expects stereo or vice versa.

    Generally a good overview. However,, I've never heard of a vocalist (Lead or back-up) who doesn't want to hear themselves in the monitor. Admittedly I've only worked in a rock setting so it might be different for worship but with the presence of amplified instruments and drums there is no way a vocalist will be able to hear themselves without amplification.

    @@Pinkybum Singers do not need to hear themselves through the monitors if properly trained and experienced. He or she can find the appropriate pitch by listening to piano, guitar or lead vocals. If they are concerned about their pitch, plugging one ear for a moment will give them a sense of their own pitch instantly. Many untrained singers do need the feedback of hearing their own voice to be able to determine if they are on pitch. That said, it is convenient to be able to hear oneself, and most singers prefer it. It shouldn't be taken for granted, however, that it is necessary.

    I don't know where to start, listen to this guy how to do a live mix is a bit of a mismatch, sorry but he is, in live sound mix you always do a "Gain Stage Structure", All Channels in PFL Mode "Pre Fade Listen" start with channel 1 say kick drum all faders fully down, pan & EQ on all channels start @ 12 o clock, @ the top of the board Trim Knob or its called Gain, Remember all channels on PFL, turn up GAIN to about 12 or 1, O Clock, you` feel a little indent, NOW turn up the MASTER Fader-s to Unity Gain 0dB, you will see there is a signal coming through your master VUs @ 0 dB with a head room of 4, remember there will be no sound coming through Front Of House in PLF because u are just getting the levels correct and do this for every channel in use, now pull masters faders all the way down then release all the PFL switches on channels then turn up the Master Faders then on all channels to Unity Gain, now you can tailor every channel sound to your choice without causing THD " Total Harmonic Distortion if you need more volume use the Trim Knob if you need less Volume use that fader Remember everything from Gain and AUXs is what the stage here and everything from Fader is what the audience here !, NOW AUXs ! on the Mackie SR24-4 VLZ which is a fantastic mixing board built like a tank AUXs 1,2,3,4,5,6, with 3,4 switchable from PRE to POST so you can use them as a stage monitors or Effects Knob in AFL meaning you use the fader to track the effects, "Remember Effects Returns are a Line Level Channel with no EQ or Fader and limited Routing," so you lose all the ability to use the EQ for the on stage monitors that's why its best to use a channel or a Stereo Channel, lets say 1-4 for stage monitors and 5-6 for Effects with AFL After fader Listen with AUXs connections @ the back all you do is turn up the appropriate AUX for that channel and that Master AUX Channel so the band can here each other, me personally i always use 5-6 for Effects and use the stereo channel so i get full EQ and control the effects as i pull down the effects fader the effect tracks with it, this is quit a long comment but sound engineering is quit complex and this is just the tip of the iceberg i understand where he`s coming from, thanks !.

    This was one of my earlier videos, and if you read through the comments and check my later videos, you will see that I agree with the strategy you recommend above. This is the way that I was trained to do it 30 years ago, and as my understanding developed, I have changed my strategy and what I recommend to users. Thanks for your constructive comments. I realize not everything in my earlier videos represents best practices, but I'm working to improve as time goes by. Most of the people who really know what they are doing don't have the time or interest to do a nuts and bolts tutorial at a beginner level, so the people on my channel are stuck with my deficient explanations to get started. Thank you for your contribution, which I'm sure many will find helpful :)
