    It doesn't seem to me that the "single cycle DMA bug" is really a bug at all, but just an inherent problem with how single-cycle DMA works. Auto-init mode was the solution to that problem, which this card supports. It's been almost 20yrs since I did some SB programming, but if I remember correctly, early Sound Blasters didn't have the auto-init mode so that's why older games don't support it.

    Thanks for this video. I was having a bloody awful time trying to get Wings of Glory running on my P3/Win98 machine. I used your msdos PIF and SB emulation software (as it's an SBLive) but it kept crashing out when starting (ran fine without sound set up) I then used my P233 which has a Soundblaster 16 installed. Needed to get the DOS drivers set up though and ended up going to the creative site and downloading a set that was for Win95 DOS to get them installed (the packs on your site that I tried needed pure dos or win3.1). All good, now I managed to play one of the games of my youth! Took a look of messing about though (I got it running in dosbox but its just not the same :D)

    Thank you for the in depth video. The world of DOS sound cards is such a hassle, with no perfect solution for every case and many popular cards featuring irritating hardware bugs and noisy output. I find it very surprising how most people didn't know about those issues at the time. I can't imagine any popular hardware manufacturer releasing hardware with that kind of bugs and getting away.

  • @philscomputerlab

    @philscomputerlab

    6 жыл бұрын

    darak2 I had no clue at the time. I did they one clone card once, and went straight back to Creative. It was only like many, many years later that I heard about the issues.

  • @darak2

    @darak2

    6 жыл бұрын

    Yeah, all the games spoke directly to hardware, so having an original Creative card was worth it. I went from a Pro to a SB16 to an AWE32 and continued using Creative cards even when their value was questionable compared to integrated audio. Now I know, in insight, how other companies probably made better cards with cleaner sound and less issues, but 100% compatibility was never guaranteed in DOS since every game did things differently and nobody was really serious about following specs. Probably every sound engine ever made for DOS was buggy in one way or another, it really was a case of 'it works in my card, let's hope it works for others'. Developers were partly to blame, but at the time quality documentation was scarce even for professionals. I had a Soundblaster 2.0 development kit at some time, and I remember it as a massive book full of blatant mistakes and sample code which often would refuse to even compile.

  • @philscomputerlab

    @philscomputerlab

    6 жыл бұрын

    That is a good point. Having one company dominate, does have its benefits. Just imagine having to support 6 different sound standards. So that was good. I'm pretty sure I had such a card back in the day, it was certainly one of the early models and it had jumpers. But I do remember getting stuck notes in Doom sometimes, so maybe it was an even older card. It was a Sound Blaster 16 Basic AFAIK, but I will never know for sure... The good old Sound Blaster and Sound Blaster 2 are the most trouble free. They just work. No mixer or anything to adjust :)

  • @darak2

    @darak2

    6 жыл бұрын

    Yeah, my first SoundBlaster used switches in the card and was hassle-free. No crappy software in your AUTOEXEC.BAT making your boot time slower either. I remember when I got that card and how disappointed I was when I realized most music would use the FM chip, which I considered a small upgrade from the ZX Spectrum I had before. The Tetra Composer MOD demo that came with the card changed my mind, but unfortunately very few games ended up using tracker music (but hey, Deus Ex was one of those, best main game theme ever!). I eventually went to appreciate Adlib music and realized it was rarely used to its full potential. Most developers just had their musician compose in some expensive MIDI equipment and converted that data straight into Adlib notes, alongside some patches that often came from some library or previous game and didn't really resemble the original instruments. The result was often a mess, but I guess there was no easy way to port the same music in a huge variety of platforms and sound hardware.

    Phil, according to the manual on "Stason" your green jumpers on DAS0 and DAS1 will select DMA 0, and not 1 as you proclaim. Manual says DAS0 needs to be open, DAS1 closed. Could it be a mistake? Edit: Even the PDF on your own website says so.

    Have a 486 rig I built this year and tried about 8 vintage sound cards including this one and eventually settled on the SB Pro 2. Best card for compatibility on a native dos rig in my opinion. Sound Blaster 16 gave me issues. The AWE32 card sounds great to me in Tie Fighter but wouldn't work at all for midi in other games.

    The jumper settings can also be found on the original documentation, if you still have such. And if Creative ever does drop the files from their site, typing the model number and " jumper settings " into a web search engine will yield the information needed.

    Talking about dropping files, I had quite the trouble getting drivers for my SB 128 PCI (Using an Ensoniq ES1373) that work when rebooting into DOS. The card works fine with the drivers from the Creative website, but they only provide the latest drivers which dropped MPU-401 emulation. In he end I found an image of the original driver CD that came with the card somewhere on the web.

    @philscomputerlab , brilliant, back in the day everything was jumpers and installs, your video is perfectly clear, and a must see for anyone that wants to see how things got setup back in the day. There are some things i wish you talked about for example in AWE32 there are 2 installs, one is something called CTCM and the other thing is the driver, im not sure why but it would be nice if you make a video regarding that because some sound blaster cards require a second install?

    My first sound card was a SB16 MCD ASP - and even in Windows, the ASP was rather pointless... Played around with the Jamie O'Connell FM synth driver in Windows 3.1 - it gave better rendering of midi GM files, eventually put some cheap no-brand wavetable add-on to it. Pretty sure it's still languishing in an old machine, as I carried it through a couple of upgrades before being forced to go PCI.

    Recuerdo tener una Diamond que funcionaba en puerto ISA. Tenía el jumper que sonando en mono amplificaba un gabinete hi-fi de mi casa que en aquel entonces era de 25 watts (12" woofer y 2" highs). La salvedad era que para tener esa fuerza quedaba en mono, de modo que en estéreo debía usar los "altavoces multimedia"... Entonces quise conseguir una segunda tarjeta para aplicar el jumper de modo contrario por si era posible tener doble mono potenciado o amplificado (canales L y R), con el tiempo fui cambiado de computador y olvidé aquello. Quedé con la duda pues, si podía usarse así. ¿Alguna experiencia al respecto?

    Hi Phil, Nice review I had one back in the days don't know the revision, but is was very good. But Comming from the ISA era and the AWE64 most of the time the jump is made to the SB Live, while in between there were the SB PCI64 and PCI SB128 as well, do you have any to share your thoughts on those? Are they any good for a mix build W95/98/DOS/W2K machine? (I build one based on SD cards so I can switch quickly, but looking for a proper Creative Sound Card.) I have 1 ISA slot shared with 1 PCI slot that I can use for a sound card.

    Unless I'm confusing KZreadrs here Phil did a video on an Ensoniq PCI card which is basically the same as SB PCI 64 a short while ago. From my experience both SB PCI 64 and PCI 128 both suck for both DOS and Windows. If you're prepared to give up on EAX sound then maybe something like a Guillemot Maxi Sound 64 would be a card to consider. It's ISA but still does 4 channel DirectSound3D in Windows.

Also, in the event somebody reads this comment looking for clarification of the difference between OPL and CQM, I found an audio sample posted on Wikipedia comparing the two sounds: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:FM_Comparison_-_Genuine_Yamaha_OPL_FM_vs._CQM.ogg TL;DR: CQM has a stronger warble effect.

    Wasn't too long ago I would have said these were a good cheap card for retro gaming machines, but now days, even these are getting more scarce and prices, like on all of this retro gear, has gone up. Seems like the Vibra16 based cards are the bargain retro cards at the moment. SB32 ( not awe32 ) might be a good alternative to the SB16 as the SB32 ( CT3600 ) cards are still pretty reasonable and offer nearly the same feature as the full AWE32.

  • @philscomputerlab

    Yea pretty much. I'm starting to look at cheaper alternatives, that I have always dismissed, but I'm not finding it quite a bit of fun. I had to remove everything from the autoexec and config files, the only way to play DOS games was using a floppy disc with modified config and autoexec files with the soundblaster lines, after that games runned fine. WIn95 is kind of crap for retro games?

    The pci version of soundcards like this should have Yamaha ymf262 opl3 chip just like the isa card version. But some are rebranded for a reason. However it has balanced perfect bass and treble fm synth and all soundbanks. So uh some people does not want to use awe32 or awe64 but it’s still kick ass but they still don’t want to use it in some particular computers since Clint/lgr is having issues with either one of stereo channel output.

    I stopped doing that, it was too much work. I will do individual videos, but use mostly the same games. Also, I explicitly mention the strengths and weaknesses of the cards, so that should be a good start :D I wouldn't read too much into it, as sometimes a different machine can make a card sound better or worse. Especially when it comes to the noise.

    The one thing I've learned is that you just have to hear things yourself. No ones ears are the same. I remember in high school a teacher had a CRT TV facing the wall with nothing glowing. I heard the whine all through class and it bugged the heck out of me. The next day it was still on, still bugging me so I asked if I could get up and turn the TV off. The teacher told me that it was off but I insisted it was on. He goes back, hits the power button and said that yes, it was on. Apparently, I was the only one that could hear it.

    Yes, that is so true! A good example is a review of an Aztech card coming up. Over headphones I could hear pretty much all Sound Blaster effects and speech being distorted or scratchy. But later, I watched the video on the TV and couldn't really hear those details. So I think a lot of people will be happy with how it sounds, which will affect the recommendation as it's actually a mint card and dirt cheap.

    For many of us I think, although for me it was the older Sound Blaster 1.5. I skipped anything with Pro, so it was straight to the 16. Actually, I did try a non Creative card first, it was a huge let-down, so I "ran" back to Creative right away and got the SB16 + Roland wavetable board.

    The installer should add the lines to the autoexec.bat, however if you use a SB Live card I recommend checking anyway-I've found that the drivers love having the lines in the wrong positions and the sound won't work in games that reuire real DOS mode unless the error is corrected.

    The environment value just makes it easier for games to 'detect' the card. Old games didn't need it; you set the configuration to use the correct hardware settings manually. You only need software to adjust the mixer.

    Hi Phil, a friend of me gave me a Soundblaster AWE32 CT2760 + DB50XG from 1994, can I use the drivers from your website from the Sound Blaster 32 CT3670 to install them for my card in Windows 98? I have plugged the card into my system but Windows isnt seeing any device, is this normal? Usually some device is detected when entering a PCI slot, or is it with ISA different? I checked and since the card is default set to IRQ7 I had to disable the printerport because this also uses IRQ7. Still no luck.

These are the settings from the Diagnose tool: DSP version: 4.13, Base I/O: 220H, Wave Table: 620H, MPU401: 330H, IRQ: 7, DMA: 1, 5. The driver update could only work if Windows actually sees a card, otherwise the update does nothing i think. Any suggestions because iam really stuck...

    The Sound Blaster 16 is _THE_ archetype DOS soundcard. It's the first Sound Blaster with CD quality stereo sound. Compatibility is unmatched; it's backward compatible with the original Sound Blaster, Sound Blaster Pro, and Adlib. The Sound Blaster 16 established the baseline of what a sound card needs to do that survives to this day. It's only technical shortcoming is the lack of Full Duplex audio in the early versions. I bought a Sound Blaster 16 ASP shortly after they came out. The ASP version was particularly expensive, but I convinced myself that the ASP was the future or some nonsense. Almost nothing used the ASP, certainly no games. The whole idea of the ASP was that it was a hardware processor for audio, including compression, which was still in its infancy. Unless you were recording sound, it's of no use. I'm considering buying a retro system. One of the non-negotiables is that the system has to have ISA for perfect DOS Sound Blaster compatibility.

    In your soundcard reviews you are not mentioning and comparing what kind of amplifier is on the card. This card and many other higher quality sound cards come with a Philips amplifier. Look very closely and you will find a tiny component with a Philips logo on it. On shitty shitty cards without an amplifiers the sound signal can not be controlled by a mixer and the signal is faint. Cheers.
