Thank you! This was very interesting video. Tarja's version will always be the ONE for me.... HOWEVER, I LOVE, love both of their voices. (They also feel like pretty cool and funny persons). I could listen to them sing for hours (which I do). I think both of those women are one of the best singers living on this planet and no one can convince me otherwise. :) Also I just want to note that there is 18 year gap between Tarja's and Floor's Phantom of The Opera versions. Tarja's voice has evolved a lot in those years. And think about how exciting it was when Nightwish suddenly performed it again, after 18 years.

Yes, and Tarja was much younger than Floor when singing these songs. Very few reactors notice that fact.

I love both singers, but I def have a bias towards Tarja when it comes to the songs on the albums she recorded for the band. For me, her version is the definitive version of those songs and the one I want to hear when I grab my earbuds. That said, I'm glad Floor is performing the songs from Wishmaster and Once when they tour, because it means I'll get to hear them live if I'm ever lucky enough to see the band in concert... and she does an exceptional job with her interpretations of those songs.

Most songs are written for a specific singer in mind, whenever those are performed by someone else - it just doesn't feel the same way. Only very, very few bands actually manage to adapt old song in a geniously way to build a perfect match for the new singer. (one of those would be Amberian Dawn, Song: Valkyries in the original version vs. the new singer version of 2013)

I first saw Nightwish live in Hamburg in 2001. My gf had seen them in Wacken. Fantastic concert. But ! Opening act was a band named After Forever. Their singer was Floor Jansen. I was so blown away, I went to buy their album Decipher right during the break. Plus: topic of the album is women in muslim society. And they played it on tour, just weeks after 9/11th ! Takes balls to do that, I think. I went searching for other projects, where Floor might be involved. And found Star One by Arjen Lucassen. Bought "Live on earth". BOOOM! I bought albums of Marcela Bovio (Elfonia and Stream of passion), of Russell Allen, of Dream Theater (James LaBrie is the singer). Found TheGathering (Anneke van Giersbergen was their singer. Still need to buy albums with Silje Wergeland. She is also absolutely fantastic!) It was a universe of musicians, that Arjen opend up for me. Needless to say that I have almost all the albums, that Arjen ever made. I once introduced him to a singer he hadn't heard of. Not giving away here name. But if she ever sings in one of his projects: guess who would smile from ear to ear. I've seen her twice in Hamburg.

For me the Tarja era songs will always sound better with her singing them. Andrew Llyod Weber said that Nightwish's version was his favorite

Bridget, I do have hearing aids and head phone as well but it is easier for you to understand because English is your first tongue I guess. Mine is not but the problem is mainly when opera singers as well as random singers are singing head voice, words are very hard to understand. People who say that they can understand each word as such do lie. Even Simone Simons from Epica who can sing very high and clear as kristal, is rather difficult to understand the words when singing head voice. In opera is this very common and that is why they sell libretto's so you can read what they are singing. Whatever; I am convinced that in the world of metal, nobody can beat Floor when it comes to high pitch but still understandably. And I only quote what so many reacting people say ; Floor is the best. Operatic style in general makes words hard to hear. There's a reason why operas often have leaflets with the lyrics and dialogue on them... But once you know what to listen for they are there.

Floor is my QUEEN. But i like Tarja too(omg i wish we have female Singer in this league here in Germany).

Hey Melisa! To me, in my humble opinion, Tarja's greatest strength has also been her biggest weakness. I mean, her powerful, operatic style *literally* set the tone for a whole style of music, but that said, with her, I find then that every song is operatic. She has one really good trick, and sticks to it. Floor, however, may be one of the most complete singers working today. She can sing whatever Tarja or Anette put down - she just has a far superior bag of tricks, I feel. So yeah - my opinion. Great job, and Rock On! 🤘😎👍

The band before used to play straight forward symphonic power metal in their early career and the voice of Tarja fits very well. Tuomas, the main songwriter and keyboard player of the band said that band are always finding ways to explore their music. Meaning, they don't want to stay in the box over and over again. Imagine if Tarja is still the singer for NW, her voice would probably not suit to the band's new sound.

No other singer has affected me as much as Floor. Until four years ago I never heard of Nightwish or Floor but since listening to Storytime at Wacken 2013 I’ve been mesmerized by this angelic Valkyrie goddess of metal. She dethroned my favorite female rock singer … the great Ann Wilson. With regards to the comparison with Tarja, Tarja does sing certain songs better which suites her operatic voice, but overall Floor is just the complete singer performer and just connects with her audience ❤

Tarja is more limited in style, so overall Floor works better for Nightwish, but for the songs that suit Tarja she cannot be beat. Tarja+Marko version of Phantom of the Opera is the peak. But for example Ghost Love Score left me cold until I heard Floor sing it.

Melisa, there will always be a part of the Nightwish Army debating and parting with one of the singers. For me it's all about the color of the voice and HOW they perform and interact with the audience. All three singers was a crucial part of the Nightwish evolution and I like all eras and the respective singers, but my overall favourite is Floor Jansen because of her absolute talent in singing almost anything. Regarding the break from Tarja, that was the only way they could deliver the news at that time so that they could explain hteir feelings and choice to all the fans at the same time. I would urge You to read the letter to Tarja again and then imagine what Tuomas went through after that. All the hate from fans and media almost drove him to suicide. Instead he wrote the song "The Poet And The Pendulum" to be able to kill himself in that song. While I do feel empathy for Tuomas for getting all the hate, he has himself admitted that they handled the firing of Tarja extremely poorly and it was unprofessional. They could have done the firing in private, making public accusations without even letting Tarja know first was not the only option. No need to hate Tuomas but he did make a mistake, not by firing Tarja but doing it the way he did.

I know nothing about Nightwish (nice chunky riff on that second song though, I like that) but reading what people are saying about Anette, especially struggling live, seems reminiscent of what people think of Blaze Bayley. He had a couple of problems stepping into Bruce Dickinson's boots in Maiden: one was the intensity of the touring and going straight from being in a smaller band to playing two hour sets most nights for months on end, the other was the fact wouldn't change the key of any of the songs to match his lower range. As such, he sounds pretty good on the records, but the live performances did not go well. I wonder if there were any similar experiences for Anette?

Storytime: I watched Floor in Hamburg with a friend, lately, with the solo tour. Opening act was Anneke van Giersbergen. Just one woman with her guitar and an 8ties style tape recorder on stage. Needless to say that most people knew very well, who she is? Now: rumour says, that Floor chose singing metal, after watching Anneke singing "Strange Machines" with her (then) band The Gathering. 1st of all, Floor confirmed that Anneke made her choose metal, during the concert. 2nd: when the show was over, there was music played from tape, while we left. The first song played was (instrumental): Strange Machines. That is, when all these little stories I get to know come together. Dear Melisa: do you know the song Kaylee from Marillion, and what the "confetti in our hair" is about? I do, now!

As a spice for sauces, etc. Shared the idea with a real chef. His answer: "Wow Peter, that's interresting!" I'm still on his radar, after a conversation on onion rings, some 2 yrs ago. But still: flabbergasted! Why? Pls go on wikipedia and type in his name: Harpal Singh Sokhi. The singing chef. If into cooking: you'll like his channel. (He's not really singing. But his credo is: cooking should be fun. We both agree on that, very much.)

To be fair to Tarja, she was ill with bad flu for this gig, and was in fact advised by doctors not to do the show. But Tarja was the trooper and performed the show... and then the band sacked her at the end of the show. Funny old world isn't it!

I posted the comment as a statement of facts rather than any opinion, and certainly not as a completion of who sings best on their death bed! I'm certainly not a "grieving Tarja" fan (if that's how you read my comment). I love all of Nightwish's singers they all brought their heart and soul to the band, and like you, I would recommend anybody to listen to all of their back catalogue 😊 Ps, if you haven't heard "Strong" by Annette Olzen, it's an album definitely worth checking out.

Tarja simply owns this song

Floor has a metallic laserbeam belt AND a warm embracing legit voice (like a cusion) AND a mean devostating growl. Everyone can decide what you like the most. But honestly she needed ten years of singing and getting life experiences to learn this.

I love both versions of this song from this band. HOWEVER, I love Tarja's version because of the fact that she hits those high notes at the end (Phantom)!! I love Wishmaster in general. interesting to see a singers perspective, ty. i realy preferr Floor, thoug there are a few songs i like Tarja more and the ones you chose are Tarja vavored for me. not that i wont listen to Floor sing them. it probably would have been to much to explain in this video. but not being musically knowledgable, i ask myself, is the vowel thing important because its tecnicaly important, or is it just that you feel the origin is english and therefore it should be done differently?

I made Peameal Bacon for the first time. I won’t know until tomorrow if it turned out. I’m making a video about the process and I have a couple of Canadian subscribers so it’s a little scary thinking about their reaction to it. 😂

Love them both. The End of an Era gig that the two Tarja songs came from is one of my favourite shows. Tarja has an ethereal quality for me that lends itself to some songs that for me, makes them hers. Sleeping Sun being one. She's also a great performer Floor, I've seem live and she's incredible, she has a stage presence that dwarfs the rest of the band. I think she realises this and takes pains to bring them with her as much as possible. She's made Ghost Love Score absolutely her own, and Poet and the Pendulum will bring tears to your eyes when she does it. Anette is a very good rock/pop singer very much in the Scandi rock mould imo. She was unfortunate to have been sandwiched between two absolute vocal monsters. Overall I think Floor fits the dynamics of the band the best of all three with her vocal flexibility. She can also growl, if you dig out a video of her performing "Yours is an Empty Wish" where Marko sings lead and she supports with a metal growl.

I prefer the sound of rock. That is also the reason why I prefer Floor. But I also love Tarja.

Heard Nightwish on Octane Sirius in about 2012, believe it was the release of Imaginaerium. Looked it up online, found the official video of Annette signing Storytime, decided - not for me. Fast forward to early 2021, still somewhat locked down, Nightwish keeps popping up on my sidebar (as a result of watching the Hu Wolf Totem and Disturbed’s cover of Sound of Silence). Ignored it for a while but then decided to give them another go……. Ghost Love Score, Wacken 2013. Since that moment, I have become a Floor Jansen Nightwish obsessed fan. When I eventually started looking back into their previous singers, it was for the same songs, and I was not impressed. Annette was way too poppy and quite the stage frump, compared to Floor and Tarja (that opinion has not changed). With Tarja, I originally found her very much like a one trick pony - an opera singer in a metal band - she had no other genres to sing. Time has led me to appreciate what she did best, and the Phantom performance, watched in full, with Marco’s crazy vocals, is truly a piece of metal history. Older songs like Sleeping Sun truly are her legacy! She was a pioneer in female fronted metal music, the first of symphonic metal! But, at the end of the day, Floor is the voice of Nightwish for me! Her amazing voice, versatility and personality make her the perfect front woman!!

"Tarja was a pioneer in female fronted metal music, the first of symphonic metal!' She was not. Floor started about the same time, arround 1996 - 1997, but moreover Anneke van Giersbergen was before that. Nightwish was the one of the first most successful in the genre, but not the first.

@@Wmeester1971 The Gathering is not considered symphonic metal. The most successful band to pioneer the genre was Nightwish with Tarja. I did not say Tarja was the first female metal singer, but the first in successful symphonic metal. After Forever was also not symphonic - Floor was fronting a metal band that was more gothic, prog and power than symphonic. I’m aware that Anneke was a huge influence on Floor, but so was Doro, so if you want to start going down that rabbit hole, we can go back to the early 80s.

@@northof4912 The gathering was considered Death/Doom Metal, Atmospheric Doom Metal (early); Atmospheric Rock (later) As you seem to know there were others like Therion that were predating Nightwish and shaping the genre. I'm just reacting to the fact that its not the case that nightwish inverted the genre. Nightwish with Tarja were very succesfull in a genre that was in development for a long time.

On the album Angels Fall First, Tuomas Holopainen sings together with Tarja 3 songs. One of the is marvelous Beauty and the Beast. Then hired guns step in action: Beauty and the Beast/Toni Kakko, Pharaoh Sails To Orion/Tapio Wilska etc. until Marco Hietala step in. Marco is the one of Finland's most respected singers and bassists, making increasingly versatile performances possible. In the early days, the songs were heavier and more classical until a couple of years before Tarja was fired, commercialism started to take shape: Dark Chest Of Wonders, Wish I Had An Angel, Nemo. Floor's version of Phantom on a Dutch singing show with Henk is amazing

Sadly, you could compare Anette and Floor singing Anette songs but Tarja hasn't sung any of them. And, as Tarja's songs were written for her more operatic voice, Anette struggles to sing them. Plus she doesn't sing her own songs live very well. So it's strange that her albums were so popular but no accounting for taste.

I have been a Nightwish fan for a very long time, but I found I could only listen to Tarja for relatively short time without feeling fatigued by her voice, for those who will flame me audio fatigue is a real thing!!. I find Floor far more enjoyable to listen to and I can spend a whole evening listening to Floor singing where my limit is maybe a live show with Tarja. I have actually listened to 3 or 4 live shows with Floor back to back, and still enjoyed the last song as much as the first.

See I'm the complete opposite I get more emotion from Floor then Tara. When Floor sings I feel it in my soul and when it's Tarja, (although being absolutely fantastic and beautiful) it just doesn't effect me at all. 💕

I love both of these vocalists, although Floor is my favorite. There are certainly songs that Tarja's voice fits better but Floor has a broader range and her stage presence is unmatched. Still, these are my opinions and I respect all those fans who fell in love with Tarja from Nightwish's beginnings.

I see personality first and foremost. From that perspective, there is no contest.

They are very different, Tarja sings operatic. Floor sings high, low, soft, angelic, growly and operatic.

Should we be concerned with you apparent fascination with vampires?

I prefer the vocals of Tarja. I highly recommend to compare both singing "Sleeping Sun". But it is always difficult to compare live videos. You never know at what point of the show the band is and how exhausted the vocalist might be.

For Anette any of these are great for her Poet and the Pendulum Amaranth Last ride of the day Tarja is my fave by far in Nightwish They dont allow Floor to use her full range barely any opera and no opera till the second album with her and no growls If you wanna hear Floor do her full range try anything by Revamp The crow the owl and the dove

Amaranthe is Annette's best performance, in my opinion, and it really showcases her energetic voice and rock/pop talents. She is an excellent singer, she just has the misfortune of being the "middle child" between two AMAZING powerhouse singers.

I think Floor is a more versatile singer than Tarja

Poco y nada entendí por la cantidad de barreras graciosas en el monólogo ahora cual fue la conclusión??? Ni siquiera entendí el enfoque bueno en fin cada una de las vocalistas femeninas forman parte de la historia de Nightwish principalmente la de Tarja y ahí te contradigo ya que la voz más oscura la tiene Tarja por la forma en la que coloca la voz para pronunciar las vocales su paleta de voz es estridente y oscura cosa que hizo que fusionara a la perfección con el rock metal sinfónico, de hecho Nightwish como banda de Rock nació gracias a la voz oscura y angelical de Tarja ya que antes de ser una banda de Rock Metal Sinfónico Lírico Operístico era una banda Acústica Sinfónica Melódica Operística y como que la voz de Tarja era muy aguda muy oscura para ese tipo de género musical mediante de la propuesta de Emppu guitarrista hasta la actualidad de Nightwish de cambiar el género musical al Rock Metal ya que la voz de Tarja fusionaba a la perfección con ese género musical por eso en la era de TARJA la banda sonaba más power más metal más heavy más oscuro hasta los instrumentos musicales sonaban sucio y espeluznante convirtiéndolos en una banda respetada y admirada por muchos!!! Hoy ya no tiene esa escencia de la vieja escuela que es la voz lírica clásica operística de color de paleta OSCURA Y GÓTICA !!! La voz de Jansen suena más liviana más Pinkpop más Disney muy dulce, si quieres seguir investigando las voces de ambas míralas y estudialas como cantantes solistas en la banda Nightwish son limitantes pero en sus propias bandas son una bomba ambas tanto Tarja como Floor 😏 AHORA TE HAGO UNA RECOMENDACIÓN REACCIONA AL NUEVO ÁLBUM DE TARJA TURUNEN COMO SOLISTA EL ÁLBUM SE LLAMA "Dark Christman " es un álbum de 12 canciones de músicas navideñas oscuras y góticas todas con sus vídeos oficiales cinematográficas que son utilizadas en la película reciente estrenada llamada como el álbum de Tarja Dark Christman , su hija Naomi también debuta con su madre Tarja en este nuevo álbum recomendadísimo para los que aman la Navidad Oscura ❄

Por eso mucho no entendí de ésta reacción porque no cuadra muchas cosas con lo que dice la reactora con los hechos tangibles , vi tantas reacciones de profesionales que me cuesta creer que ésta señora haya analizado desde la perspectiva del favoritismo!!! I disagree. I think you’re mixing aesthetics with timbre. As far as aesthetics go Tarja may well have had a darker brand to her but vocally she is far more aspirate and treble toned than Floor. It’s not an insult its just a case of ones vocal folds. That being said if she has made an impact on you that is great. All vocalists should. Thank you for the recommendation. The first metal show i went to was a Nightwish show with Tarja so for me there is a clear bias towards Tarja, although i recognize Floor as the better technical singer. But here is something that can be said without as much bias : Back when Nightwish first got popular, we only had Amy Lee from Evanescence and some people knew Within Temptation as well, but aside from that, no clear sopranos singers in Metal really, at least not popular in America. So Tarja really pioneered this metal / soprano mix for a lot of people and her accent was just so great to my ears most likely because it was new. But putting aside all of this, I think the singers of Nightwish are a tad over-hyped. To me, its always been the composition of the melodies, aka mainly Tuomas and we tend to focus on the singer because they really are the front of the band, especially for Nightwish. Back then it was Tarjamania, now its Floormania.

All 3 Nightwish female singers are great. But Tarjas classical trained voice is the one for me. Glad that Floor can sing those old songs guite good but her voice is to mainstream.

Floor is by far the better singer with way more details and stuff. Tarja is kind of an ordinary good singer which just sounds interesting due to her iconic operatic-classical voice - which has a better reputation than for instance a pop like voice like Anette has. Even if Tarja and Anette have exactly the same skills Tarja sounds due to that reputaton more exicting. Apart from that, Tarjas voice can be addictive as long its in her comfy zone and the track fits. Outside of that she sometimes sounds pressed/thin/flat and in general good but not really very detailed, buildup, colored etc.

Tarja the real Queen of nigthwish

This is a no brainer for me. Though I wouldnt of used those two songs to compare, its hands down Tarja. Floor while very good singer cant hold a candle to Tarja, sorry not even close. Nightwish ended when they booted Tarja and slowly so have the other members left. Now the band today is very good, dont get me wrong. But ...yeah Tarja all the way

Floor is a great singer but too pop-ish to me. It’s Tarja is something new for me because on the radio I hear lots of pop singers but tarja is just different a different flavor if you may. I actually am jealous of Tarjas voice lol cause I want to have her voice.

@@annmariemills1554 I never once said I was a great singer miss old, miss grandma, miss you need surgery for that face. Yes Floor sounds like a pop singer, who can barely growl sounds so airy and forced which she should train more on that, here classical singing is absolutely horrible I don’t what happen when she entered nightwish, she probably received a contract saying “you will not be able to sing all your abilities and just sing classical as bad as you can” cause she sounded amazing in After Forever and ReVamp. But yes POP, she sounds like a generic pop singer, and I know singers who can easily sing like her without a problem, she isn’t THAAAAT special besides don’t get mad I’m just saying. She’s a pop singer to me not my cup of tea.

Honestly it was painful to listen to you until the end. I disagree with everything you said. Take some time to listen to Tarja and Floor in a wide range of songs and see which of the two has the darker, richer voice and also the bigger voice, especially head voice. Floor's so-called "darker" tone is artificially produced and it always makes me cringe. This is why I dislike her Phantom and Stargazers for instance and Wishmaster is totally butchered - clearly you are not familiar with that song. Floor is great, she has her strong points, but these are not it. I am not commenting as a fighter in the Tarja vs Floor war - I have zero interest in that. To each their own. But to make judgements like this based on seconds of a performance is ridiculous and frankly surprising since you obviously have training and can sing.

Really? Listen to something from Tarja's solo career, some her classical concerts and also rock concerts. Floor has darker timbre? You didn't heard Tarja's abilities, how dark and deep her chest voice is, you can't hear her full abilities in Nightwish, only in her solo career. And, you know, Tarja was much younger in that concert than Floor when she joined Nightwish. And really, that "Wishmaster" in Floor version was better? For me she has big problem to even sing that... It really looks like you just prefer Floor, so you shouldn't do such videos...

Because of people like you, it has been said for years that Tatja can't sing, that she's terrible person without emotions etc, many people still say that, it's sick... It's sweet how you focus your anger because you can't stand a tiny bit of criticism on your fetish singer.
