She said it at the time. Sick with a cold. Could not even sing during rehearsal. But was well enough by showtime to do this. She was happy. Crying tears of joy because of the new video feature and costume changes and sick had her very worried about carrying out the show. About disappointing the fans, her bandmates, crew and fans. It went off without a hitch. The audience ate it up. They were into the music and rocking out. It was such a high point. Musically the band in synch. She loved where they were musically. Loved what they were doing. Excited for a short break then one more album and tour while preparing to take the ultimate plunge into solo work to do her thing in her style and no nightwish to back her up or to use as a crutch. She would sink or swim on her own merits Comoletely blindsided by how those she trusted and thought things were good with. Having the time of their lives with success at a level never seen before, had already put it motion their plan to fire her after the concert. To publish a letter overnight before she even gets a chance to read it. No chance to talk. To hash things out. They did her dirty!! Whatever grievances you had, making her last to know humiliation and bewilderment. That was awful. Lacking guts to tell her in person. That poisons this concert for me. I have no hard feelings for Floor who came in later and never would do anything to upset or betray her friend Tarja. No doubt having her blessing to tour with and take over singing duties with them. But the band itself apart from Marko who has made amends with Tarja, no. I will have nothing to do with them. I place loyaty very high and betrayal of that is not something I forgive easilly.

Tarjas version - Nightwish performing "Nemo" with Tarja as lead-vocalist, is my favourite version too. Floor is amazing. A vocalist I set right beside Dimash, Angelina Jordan, Katrina Velarde or Morgan James for example. But I REALLY like this classical operatic style Tarja forces to fit into Heavy Metal. That was the hook that got me back in the day. I learned to know some actual (German) opera-singers - their voices would be sooo great for Symphonic Metal... But their personalities don't seem to fit the requirements. We were so lucky to have Tarja go for it :). Tarjas work on her own is very cool - But Tarja with Nightwish was perfection, in my opinion. (On her own, Tarja does not ROCK hard enough.)

There have been few opera singers in the metal bands, but it has always been either that music and lyrics didn't fit, or that opera voice was "too potato", like Tarja said in one recent interview. She had to made it her own way, and for me it was the perfect way. Nobody told her how to sing metal with classical voice. I will always miss her and old Nightwish, even that Floor is probably the best overall female vocalist out there, and perfect fit for today's Nightwish.

@@kharnynb When Anette joined, it was Nightwish and Tarja fans alike who were giving shit to Anette. When Floor joined, most Nightwish and Tarja fans were relieved and accepted her with open arms. A tiny portion of Tarja fans continues to charade and will never be satisfied. With that said, it is with no doubt Floor fans who stand for the sheer majority of all the negativity nowadays. Especially with this reaction phenomenon, constantly going to Tarja videos just to rant that she has 1000 flaws and try to continue smearing her name over what happened 15 years ago. I also notice a lot of these people are sexist assholes who call themselves "metalheads" - who have preconceived notions that a metal singer should be of a certain type, and Floor fits that, Tarja does not. I have lost the count on how many reactions who have done Tarja videos, and the dislike ratio was just disproportionate. Luckily from the start of your comments throughout the analysis, I remembered why I became a Patron. Really appreciated how you pointed out how there's no right or wrong way to sing this and how different their approach, technique/education and talent is. I'd like to add that in the mid nineties having a classically trained singer in a metal band was unique and Nightwish often was labelled as Opera Metal. Their first demo, actually became their first album (Angels Fall First) and they quickly grew to fame with Oceanborn and Wishmaster, getting praise first for their power (they even had death growls and grunting in the beginning until From Wishes to Eternity), power and symphonic elements. Later on terms like Folk metal were used more and more. Anette brought more pop-rock elements and Floor of course can do anything. Dynamics have shifted to fit the singers, with addition of Marko as replacement for Sami, the bass changed and they got a better male singer (Tuomas vocal abilities were not the best for Nightwish). And of course addition of Troy brought a lot of extra instrumental options (and less need for backing instrumentals).

Tarja sounds the same the whole way through and it comes off as "easy" or "effortless", which you commented on and is certainly a big part of her appeal. Then Floor comes along and takes you on a journey - there is a progression to the way she performs a song, and she's able to move between many styles on the fly, it's part of her story-telling. It's also is super appealing, just for very different reasons. Thanks for taking another look at NW, looking forward to your next reaction!

Nightwish fans have an AMAZING concert-energy. Just had to say that. Fantastic. This band! Wow. Every time I listen to them (and I've only heard of Nightwish through your reaction, Christi, and I'm deeply grateful for the exposure of the canyon in my musical knowledge, which I've been delightedly filling for the last year or so), I am floored (no pun) by how amazing their mastery of the music is. Tarja's voice is rich and velvety and I love this rendition, too. These ladies are out-of-this-world talented. Also, I found the analysis fascinating. Thank you for the comparison of technique and WHAT we were hearing (which of course is a universe apart from comparing hierarchical quality or skill). You rock. Lovely.

It's not surprising that you prefer Tarja's version because this song was originally composed by Tuomas for her and her vocal/tonal abilities. She is the singer who performs this song in the album Once (2004) which 'Nemo' come from. And this live performance is very accurate to the recording version. I love Floor Jansen as a singer, I listen her from her first band After Forever and she's my favorite metal singer of all time and perfectly fit with modern Nightwish. But Tarja Turunen will always have a special place in my heart as the best 'old-school' Nightwish singer, her pure classical dark voice is still amazing.

I was VERY pleasantly surprised to come back this afternoon and see how much much respect and love you are all expressing. Thank you. You've given me hope for the Nightwish Army. As more than one of you has said, this doesn't doesn't have to be, and shouldn't be, a question of who's better. Christie, you've done a great job of highlighting the reasons these performances sound different without getting caught up in whether one is better than the other. So thank YOU, as well. (Now for my very controversial opinion: the very best performance of NEMO was given by Tim Akkerman on the Dutch television show Beste Zangers 2019).

Regarding what you said - anytime i listen to Floor, i tend to smile - because she is smiling when she sings .(as you are saying - obvious) - as for Tarja - i am just impressed. Rarely, i mean really rarely does Tarja make me shiver - but Floor - that is another level. She emits so much happiness. I started listening to the band in 2003 and is still my number one band. As always, great job Christi. I loved Tarja, and when she and the band parted ways I was worried Nightwish wouldn't recover, despite all of their talent. Anette had her own sound, which to me was more of a "pop" sound. It didn't seem to fit the band as much. I thought I would need therapy, but then Anette and the band parted ways and Floor came along. She fit the band perfectly. I absolutely love her vocals. We, i.e. The Nightwish Army, are very lucky to have had this amazing journey. If you want to have some fun, watch Tarja as she reacts to people singing her songs. Her reaction to the kid singing "Nemo" is priceless. @@metalhead4624 I used to be a diehard Floor fan, but then I saw her "fans" always shitting on Tarja's talents (on Tarja's videos...) and the same never happened in reverse (probably because we're evolved enough to know how good a singer Floor is - we just don't go on Floor's videos to talk shit about her). It made me go through a mini-"renaissance". I fell in love with Tarja's dark soprano all over again, and while I still love Floor, it's her "Flooraholics" I absolutely hate (comments like "Tarja who? ;)" - give me a fucking break). Floor's a good singer, but there's no comparison. Tarja, Anette, and Floor each have many songs that I prefer their version of over the others. All different colours, tones, moods... all very talented ladies. I would be interested to see more reactions/analysis of yours to Tarja - either with Nightwish or her solo work. Tarja was trained as opera singer. Floor started with rock and metal and then later studied classical singing to extend her capabilities. It ended because Tarja never really was a 'frontwoman.' She's never had the temperament to be in a band - she's always been more suited to being the 'headliner,' a soloist. Among everything that happened, it came out that she wasn't thrilled with the guys' typically rockstar behavior, and felt 'excluded' because of it. Floor on the hand embraces that, and her male bandmates (she's never been a solo singer) are always her 'brothers.'

@@garyballard179 Well, Floor and Tarja entered the world of metal differently. Floor knew beforehand what she was diving into. She heard The Gathering and Anneke Van Giersbergen and knew right after that that was something she also wanted to do, and applied for the Rock Acadamey - she started as a rock singer, and ADDED operatic singing after. For Tarja it was the opposite. She started with classical singing and was preparing herself for that world, which is the complete opposite of the typical rock-star life. But she fell in love with it, and continue with it till this day. "She's never had the temperament to be in a band" She has had her own band for the past 15 years, where Alex and Max have pretty much been with her from the start, so that has nothing to do with it. Her personality and priorities just did not click with those of the guys - and she voiced them and was ready to leave on her own will, so lets not open that can of worms for the millionth time.
