SOTERIOLOGY: What Is God Up To?

Out typical conversations about salvation seem to center around our own personal redemption, making us the center of gravity within that theology. But is there more to it than that? What is God up to? Is He doing more than just saving individual souls? God is making peace, reconciling everything - whether things in heaven or things on earth - through the blood of Christ (Colossians 1).

טוב מאוד! Thank you so much for this series. I can’t count the times I was muttering (and shouting 😄) “YES!” while listening to this. Thank you for putting into such eloquent words what I struggle to express - yes, God saves us, from whatever we need saving from (usually our own False Selves and all their bs), but for a purpose, to partner with Him in His story. Jesus didn’t just come to die, he came to teach us how to live, and to set us free from whatever holds us back from God, including our fear of death.

You just summed up perfectly why I have struggled with Christianity my whole life. As much as I’ve tried to understand it, the way so many Christians frame the religion, it comes across as incredibly selfish. So many Christians only seem to care about their personal salvation, and “to hell (literally) with everyone else so long as me and mine get into heaven.” Love of neighbor and even love of God seem to come second to “I want to go heaven/avoid hell.” It makes it impossible for perfect love to cast out all fear and makes even their loving behavior come across as always having an ulterior motive. But then, I can’t blame them, because this is how we are taught to love God: with a carrot and a stick. That’s why I’ve always admired the saying of Sufi mystic, Rabia of Basra: “God, if I love you for fear of hell, burn me in hell; if I love for for desire of heaven, exclude me from heaven; but if I love you for your own sake, do not withhold from me your beauty.” It embodies what Christian spirituality SHOULD be, but falls so short of.

When first learned the Bible my teachers emphasized God manifestation as the end game so to speak. That God's goal was to manifest Himself in all creation to be all and in all.

Thank you Marty for putting what I have been thinking so eloquently and graciously. I have had the same sense that we have missed it somewhere and have fallen into the trap of us being the center of gravity. Great thoughts to think through

Hi Marty, I loved this series, maybe it is only word choice but I see God's has shown himself in demonstrating a key element of his character, he's about restorationm, salvation is for his special creation human, that part of his creation that is made in His image. And I believe that salvation provides the essential components that His unique perfect design can be utilized for the full purposes of His kingdom. Thanks for all that you do in keeping us curious. Love you Brother!

So, how would you bring the good news to the areas of the world where there is no Bible? Salvation of personal souls matters.

I doubt Marty is a Calvin's. But, I must say that I have noticed that when the Heaven and hell portions enter anywhere into the conversation, it automatically becomes the center of gravity. It has to. If that is even a small component of a much bigger picture, that will always become the main issue. It is a life or death issue of eternity. So how do we hold those understandings and not make it about that?
