Sophomore slump: Space Harrier 3-D & Alex Kidd: The Lost Stars | Segaiden 059

Ойындар

Warning to sensitive viewers: This episode contains rapidly strobing 3D footage. I normally drop alternating frames on 3D games to minimize the effect, but in this case, the 3D imaging is central to the game's technical issues (which I did my best to explain despite being a layman).
By mid-1988, the Master System had just about reached its second birthday... and, well, you know what they say about the "terrible twos." Here we have a string of second games in existing Master System franchises to prove the point. I wouldn't call either Space Harrier 3-D or Alex Kidd: The Lost Stars bad, but neither quite capture the excellence of Space Harrier or Alex Kidd: In Miracle World.
In both cases, I feel that these failings result from the desire to chase an arcade-style experience, though each game falls short for entirely different reasons. Space Harrier 3-D makes questionable use of the Sega 3-D Glasses, while Alex Kidd abandons the rich design of its console-based predecessor in pursuit of converting a vapid coin-op release.
Sorry, kids, the birthday party is canceled.

The first time Alex Kidd screamed in pain during this video I chuckled because it was amusing. The tenth time Alex Kidd screamed in pain during this video I understood how kids of the time likely felt about it. The twentieth time Alex Kidd screamed in pain during this video it had become the funniest thing ever, because I'm sure Jeremy was including these moments on purpose as a sick joke by this point.

I think the issue with the 3D in Space Harrier (besides it being 80s 3D graphics tech) is that there are inconsistencies between the frames due to those drawing priorities which make it harder for your eyes to settle. There's an interesting port of Space Harrier 3D to the PS2 as part of the Sega Ages line. The second Space Harrier disk in that series includes a lot of the Space Harrier ports including this rather than make you use the PS2 VR glasses for the 3D effect, it changes the graphics to a red/blue anaglyph.

I think the problem with the 3d effect for the background tiles is that they're tiles. Foreground sprites are still sprite-based, but they can appear at any x-coordinate on the screen; this means the discrepancy between the two eye views can be any number of pixels, which in turn means that the apparent z-depth can vary smoothly. Here, though, the difference between the eyes has to be a multiple of the tile width, making for jarring discontinuities as the objects jump between quite widely spaced discrete z-planes. I suspect someone powerful at Sega just didn't consider the interaction of the Space Harrier background-sprite hack and the 3D glasses technology, and the programmers produced this to try to show them it didn't work...and the higher-up in question instead shipped it.

I actually really loved this one growing up and still have a major soft spot for it today. It's got some chonky visuals and blitzing through the levels can be a lot of fun when you get better at the game. It was the third game in the series that really did it in for my friends and I as kids (yes, it's more complicated, but.. ehhh). I suppose this second one makes sense too given that it's a port of an actual arcade game, but it probably bewildered fans of the original. I agree it's probably not the direction Sega should have taken with it in hindsight, but I still think it's a decent little platformer.

I feel, from watching the footage here (I've never played SH3D, which we should just call "SHED"), that in addition to the rectangular tile problem, the lower framerate is also a significant issue. The nature of the glasses is that the game must run at half the framerate of the original. To keep the same speed, each object only gets half as many frames for the player to register its existence. For a game in which 3D projectiles move from the background towards the player, a player needs at least two frames to figure its direction and velocity. I see projectiles that are drawn only four times before they hit the player! Now, place _multiple_ identical-seem projectiles on the screen, and add to the player's cognitive burden not only figuring out how they're moving, but in keeping them separate, in a game where this information is absolutely vital to success. It's no wonder to me why you got headaches from playing it. On Lost Stars, I notice they devoted precious cartridge space to the arcade's digitized catch?phrase, "FIND THE MIRACLE BALL!"

Regarding the headaches, I think those may just be intrinsic to the technology. I remember I had a pair of similar goggles for my 90s PC, and even on games which used them well - like Descent - I'd have a splitting headache after half an hour. I think it's just about the flickering, and the relatively low apparent framerate. Edit: So I remembered that the first Sega 3D Archives on 3DS included Space Harrier 3D as a bonus... and oh dear god, even with genuinely good 3D tech, that game is a total eyesore. Looking at it, I think the big colored borders around the "sprites" is another major issue. Your eyes want the colors to be part of the background, but they insist on popping out because they're attached to the "sprite." Seriously, not good. And it's a shame, since the 3D Outrun is actually pretty decent, for an 8-bit game.

Having only ever played the first game in these series I think I dodged quite the bullet in not playing the sequels- then again maybe I simply didn't SEE the bullets in question because they were behind the first and didn't render so I didn't know they were there in the first place :) Still, an intense action-game game where objects don't show properly and you can only turn off effects if you earn them via high score and a sequel that gives you less options to attack and seemingly controls worse than the previous game... oof. No wonder nobody speaks of these games as much, or that Alex Kidd didn't make it to Sonic's level (and probably wouldn't have even IF Master System had sold in NES levels). Also out of curiosity, did the 3D effect STAY off if you shut down the game or did you have to do a score run to shut it off every time you turned off the Master System?

I feel like it probably came across way better if you kept up with it contemporarily. Like most American kids, I only thumbed through the Master System library after the Genesis really took off and I wanted to learn more about Sega's back catalog. And since I had already been an avid NES owner, it meant that I was comparing the entirety of the Master System and NES libraries against each other posthumously. Alex Kidd in Miracle World (1986) does not impress very much when you're pitting it against Super Mario Bros. 3 (1990). But when you consider that, at its release, the bulk of its competition consisted of titles like Chubby Cherub or Ninja Kid, then it makes more sense. And then Sega moves onto next gen in 1989 as the NES enjoys its fully realized end-of-life potential. So to me it's not really surprising that the Master System performed way better in regions that Nintendo neglected or was very late to the party with some of their tentpole releases.

Converting a game like that to consoles required some inevitable compromise. You could do it this way with the background knock-out around the tiles but huge sprites (and "sprites"), or you could do it the NES way with tiny sprites and tons of flicker. There was no ideal solution when converting a game built for dual 10MHz 68000 processors to run on a console powered by a single 3MHz Z80 or 6502.

I guess this is a 1-2 punch of disappointment from Sega. At least Space Harrier 3-D can be a tolerable game once you can turn the 3-D off. Lost Stars is a prequel that just doesn't work. I guess we have to muddle through this 1988 stretch to reach the good stuff that's coming in late 1988 though.

That was definitely an option available to American kids when this version came out in 1988, yes

Use a Back To The Future Delorean time machine, all the cool kids had one in the 80s

The Amiga 1000 cost $1285 on release while the Sega Master System cost $200. For those of you unable to math, that's a little over six times the price, far from the "tens of times" stated in this video. The Amiga 500 would be even cheaper at $699, but it wasn't released until a month after the Master System port of Space Harrier. All these numbers are easily obtainable on Wikipedia, but it seems that Jeremy would prefer to simply lie about a huge portion of the medium he claims to be chronicling the history of.

The Macs I mentioned in the same breath as Amigas cost anywhere from $2600 (CE) to $7700 (IIx) in 1988, but no-you nailed it. This was to be the first step in my diabolical scheme to lie, deceive, and inveigle America's impressionable youth, but I've been foiled :(

Also, a quick search of 1986 newspaper ads shows that most retailers, including Macy's, were selling SMS hardware for $120-130 at launch and $80-100 by 1988. Sadly, I am unable to math, so I don't know how that compares to the A1000's price. Hopefully someone can chime in and let me know.

Unpopular opinion: I don't see the appeal of Space Harrier...AT ALL. It looks so stupid and boring.

Space Harrier looked excitingly different from other games in the magazines at the time but I never played it then and it can't possibly have the same significance now.

Hang-On, After Burner, OutRun, and Space Harrier are all incredible sensory experiences in their original arcade cabinets. Less so in 8-bit console form or even on a good modern TV. This was a big challenge for Sega all through the console days, I think: Translating their profound arcade experiences into a satisfying home form. I'd argue that Sonic succeeded in large part because it wasn't an attempt to directly convert an arcade game but rather captured the sensation of the coin-op Sega spirit in something built from the ground-up for home play.
