Soothe Your Lungs: How to Make a Potent Marshmallow Infusion
I love marshmallow (not the confection but the plant) for its cooling, soothing, and moistening qualities; plus it’s handsome in the garden. And it makes an excellent upper respiratory remedy.
Marshmallow is a perennial of the Malvaceae family, scientifically called Althaea officinalis. Althaea means to heal. Officinalis means used in medicine. Althaea officinalis translates to “to heal and use as medicine”.
This is an important herb to have on hand for soothing lungs. I often include it in herbal formulas and suggest you have some on hand too.
Therapeutics
This high mucilage plant soothes inflammation, irritations, and dryness: for respiratory system, digestive system, urinary system, and topically on skin.
Actions: emollient, demulcent, antitussive, vulnerary, anti-inflammatory, cooling, yin tonic.
Useful for: Respiratory: dry coughs, laryngitis, bronchitis, croup, etc. Digestive: ulcer, gastritis, and other gut inflammatory issues. Urinary: cystitis, urethritis, etc. Skin: burns, sunburns, eczema, etc.
Biography & Habitat
Native of Europe, North Africa and Western Asia. Now grows in eastern North America at the edges of saline and brackish marshes, in full sun to part shade. It likes rich moist soil. Happily grows in gardens. Found as far west as Nebraska, south to Arkansas, and north to Quebec. Hardy in USDA zone 3-9. Plant some, if none grow in our area!

May your days be soothing, marshmallow-style.

    So true😀 she's a copy, in looks and lifestyle,of my Italian friend Gigia, who owns an organic farm here in central Italy where I live now. I moved out of London UK over ten years ago to live simply in the mountains without a car in a small very old stone house, I bought, growing my food, forging, bartering with small local organic farms, keeping chickens, lots of cats😂, no money, no washing machine or central heating or hot running water, just my trusty wood stove Ms. Goldie😀. When I first came to this region I did some volunteering at Gigia's farm and she was the kindest person to guide this clueless city girl, me, strutting in high heels, full makeup and all. She influenced me to make this change and I'm ever grateful to her. So yes, this lady, the channel owner/presenter, oozes kindness and gentleness😘💕😁😚

    Nice video, my favourite is to cold infuse first, strain and then hot infuse the marc and mix the two liquids. As a researcher studies done by ourselves and several other bodies has indicated marshmallow is efficacious against gram positive bacteria. I have also much anecdotal evidence of this in humans and dogs.

    Hello from London, England. Great video. This is the next for me in a long line of 'cures/help' in tackling my silent reflux. Recently tried slippery elm, but couldn't stand the smell or taste. Just bought marshmallow root and took some yesterday. How thick is the mixture supposed to be as what I made wasn't particularly gluppey as I expected, or perhaps I'm wrong. I just went by the packet and added 200ml of boiling water to 3 teaspoons and left for around 20 mins.

  • @DinaFalconi

    Hello to you from NY, USA. The infusion may not be as thick as you imagined. Here is the recipe for making marshmallow infusion: Marshmallow Infusion made with hot or cold water. Steep time: at least one hour and up to 8 hours Ratio of dried marshmallow root per water: 8 oz water per ¼ -½ oz marshmallow root cut and sifted. Or 1 pint (16 oz) water: ½ -1oz of root. Fresh root: Use more root, perhaps double than when dried. Measurement ratios: 1 heaping Tablespoon weighs ¼ oz = large palmful. Hope this helps.

  • @DinaFalconi

    @DinaFalconi

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hello Kelly! I've found them to be quite similar, just make sure you steep long enough. I steep for at about 8 hours. For a hot infusion, about 6 hours of that is no longer hot, so maybe that really becomes and cold infusion too. Still, when using marshmallow root in formulas with other herbs, I'll infuse the combo hot. Hope this helps.
