Soo Locks - Great Lakes Locks System in Sault Saint Marie

Our first stop in Michigan's Upper Peninsula are the Soo Locks in Sault Saint Marie. We got to watch the lifting of giant, 1000ft cargo ships as they pass from Lake Huron to Lake Superior, and sometimes from Lake Superior to Lake Huron again. We talk about how boat locks work and catch a pair of Soo Locks Boat Tours as they go through the locks.

Pumps are only used to dewatering the locks for maintenance

I ride the locks on the Mississippi in my canoe. It’s free and kind of fun. The most impressive was St. Anthony falls upper lock, but it was permanently closed years ago. The US Amry Corps is studying what to do with the locks in Minneapolis St. Paul. Since there is no more commercial barge traffic this far up the river, they are no longer used for their intended purpose. I’ll keep using them as long as they are open.

@@NeverStopAdventuring Well, they are free to use for the boaters, but they must cost hundreds for thousands of dollars annually to maintain and staff.

Excellent video in that you are very articulate, charming, engaging, and have a natural public speaking ability. These types of well done videos are few and far between, as such, a surprising pleasure to glean information from. please keep it up. Cheers.

Thank you so much! We always feel like visiting a place is interesting and fun but the experience is always enhanced if you learn about it before hand. Most of the time the signage at places like the Soo Locks is really good, but it doesn't always tell you everything!

Does it looks smaller now than you remember? I can think of a lot of things I saw as a kid that I went back to see as an adult that looked smaller 🙂 I wonder how the upgrade is coming along. I think it's slated to be done in 2030...

That’s awesome. We were just in the area last month but didn’t have time to do the Soo Locks because of our puppy. Very interesting.

Sounds like you must have had a warmer time there than we did! We'll probably have some pretty similar content for a while as we make it through all of our footage. Did you two have a favorite campground while you were out that way? We actually moved through the area pretty fast in order to see everything and make it back to CO for pregnancy appointments.
