Sony Xperia 1 review: a tall order

Ғылым және технология

Sony's Xperia 1 Android phone is unique: it has a 21:9 aspect ratio on a 6.5-inch screen. It's tall, basically. But can Sony finally get over the problems it has historically had with cameras and software? And most importantly: can it really justify a $950 price?

I have stopped using iPad pro 10.5 for entertainment since I have night this phone. Moreover, usually people don't walk with their phones in back pocket. I use multitasking on it usually KZread with what's app. I had been using iPhone since 2010. Finally I decided to move to android and I opted for Xperia 1. I am proud of my choice. i still have my xperia 1 and it still amazes me how good it is. and yes after using this phone for years i don't think i could ever switch brands. sony makes the best phones and could probably be one of the best selling phones if they wanted. if they advertised their phones heavily, they would sell a lot more, and then they wouldn't have to charge as much if they sold more. sadly most people are npcs and will never buy anything that's not heavily advertised. it's like their brains tell them that whatever is advertised most heavily is automatically the best. it's almost like sony doesn't want everyone having their phones. for whatever reason they like their phones having a niche fan base. i kinda like it too, being the only person i know with a sony, and nearly everyone else has either a samsung or an iphone.

Watched the video and went through some comments it seems like that people love Xperia 1 and I love it too after used it for almost a month, there's something that Sony really makes this phone great, like eye focus, X1 for mobile chips and side sense is super useful!! I might wonder if you just like too much with 8 pro, of course 8 pro is a great phone but that is also not prefect. I got my Xperia with USD 780 and this is worth the price.

i bought my xperia 1 for 800 about a year after it came out and it's still working like new. and even after having it for years, this phone still amazes me. i'm still shocked by how amazing the screen looks, it's literally perfect and i can't imagine the newer models improving on it in any way. i have like 10 emulators on this phone, and they all work perfectly. i even played a few ps2 games with emulators that ran perfectly, i couldn't believe it. although the ps2 emulator does drain the battery extremely fast, so i don't use it too much, but it's amazing that i can.

One thing, the price is good, because you get a real flagship with all the hardware also the SD 955. A display with oled 4k HDR. Lot of great specs. An IPhone or Samsung are also priced like that. Midrange phones are €400~€600. So, subjective afterthoughts without meaning or consumptions doesn't fit in a review. Your opinion isn't where a review is meant to be for. So please, stop doing reviews or make it more based on objective reliable review.

Overall though apart from a few small things I really loved my Sony but if you’re more of a social media guy that likes to post pictures on Instagram then you should probably get a IPhone or google pixel. I have been an Xperia user for the past 6~7 years.. and I completely agree with Dieter here.... I loved Sony Xperia devices for a variety of reasons, but every new generation they drop many of the things I fell in love with. For instance: (2012) Xperia Acro S (one for me and one for my wife): - Lots of ports in a compact device.... MicroUSB (with OTG), MicroSD Slot, Headphone Jack, MicroHDMI with CEC Support. - Built in screen protector for anti-shattering the display. (it already cracked, but it is not noticeable) - Included charging dock This was an absolute beast of hardware, with mediocre performance, however at the time was amazing. It is still used to this day (2019) by my 7y/o son as a retro nintendo emulator. (2015) Xperia Z3 Compact (Z3c for me and Z1c for my wife): - Magnetic charging port. It had a flawed design, but it is always great to have an alternative charging method just in case. And my car stereo was compatible with that port. - Great raw performance in a compact size. - MHL video out. (I still preferred HDMI, but with an adapter was OK). This device was great but it was extremely fragile... the display cracked in my pant's pocket and the worst part was that the digitizer (touch) was fusion to the glass, so it was unusable after that. In 2016 I was truly looking into reasons to stick with Xperia, and being used to the software I really felt like an iPhone User struggling to switch... so I decided giving Sony one more chance.... (2016) Xperia XZ (and my wife got the Xperia X). It is still what we use on a daily basis so almost 3 years strong. - The durability of this phone is great, I keep it naked, and it has fallen many times up to a height of 1.2 mts. to solid concrete. The last fall cracked the plastic corner but the display is still intact. - I love the side mounted fingerprint scanner (with power button integrated) it is definitely the best location for me and I am a lefty. - Battery care for charging slowly at night is good, my battery still retains about 89% of its capacity (checked in the engineering test screen) Everything else of this phone is simply average. It holds up OK for 2019, but I wish it had more RAM, specially for gaming. Performance of the SD820 is mediocre, it gets hot and throttle with PUBG, and the speakers are not very loud. However I do enjoy the durability. The water resistance on all Xperia devices I owned was very good (up until it was obviously unable to handle it, with a crack or missing cap). Now, after my last Xperia generation I never wanted to upgrade, due to the fact that they removed most of the things mentioned here, along with several software features exclusive to Xperia. I am considering switching to an S10e due to the similarities in features to my current XZ but with better internals. But I am also tempted by the ROG phone so I am waiting to see what the ROG 2 offers. Xperia current lineup has little to no appeal to me anymore. Sadly.

Also extra features like 120 Hz display,..Ps4 remote controlling..dedicated camera button..960 fps super slowmo in full hd..and many more that only xperias can do...so shut up..you have not yet seen a xperia 1 in real life..so don't judge it..

I stopped watching your video when you said OnePlus has a better camera than the Sony. OnePlus is a great phone, probably the one I'd buy out of the two, but the one thing Sony beats OnePlus at is camera quality. Its things like this that help me remember why I stopped watching you guys.

Does anyone else review at the verge?? I’m getting tired of one guy doing everything 😓

I like his reviews. They seem right and he covers most useful points. Also, he doesn’t exaggerate with ironic intonation as others do. But there are some reviews made by the other guy, the chief editor I think.

How's the battery life on your phone?

You said that it won't fast charge overnight. This is called Battery Care, and I have found it to be *very* effective on my xa2. It looks for patterns on what times you tend to take your phone off charge, and aims to finish charging shortly before that time. This can be either temporarily disabled by tapping the notification while it is active, or permanently disabled in settings.

Watching this in anticipation of the mark II. It's poised to possibly quietly become the best phone of the year. Camera engineering from the Sony Alpha division. New, larger camera sensor. Eye autofocus tracking. Added time of flight sensor. Exposure tracking. High quality audio jack. Much larger battery. Wireless charge. Newly designed, stronger speakers. Still 4k. Still HDR. Still 10 bit color. USB C. Dedicated camera button. Side mounted fingerprint scanner. The new phone literally has everything I could possibly want in a phone.

I can get this phone new for 300€ (About 400$us i think?). Should I? I've used a Nexus 5 my whole life (yep, i still rock it to this day) and i'm considering which phone to pick (i don't know if pixel 3 is worth the money). What would you recommend? Thanks

nothing related to the video but i watch Verge mostly because this guy is the one doing the review. the way of presentation and the personal touches he brings to the product reviews are quite interesting. I hope you guys will keep him in the payroll for the years to come... cheers..
