Yeah they sound also much clearer I think.. It wasn’t worth it for me to spend extra hundred bucks on xm4.. I should have bought XM3’s instead 😕

I also prefer the vocals on the 3s BUT! the volume in the 3s is higher in all the samples compared to the 4. This makes a huge psychological difference when comparing. Try adjusting the volume when listening. Make it higher for 4 and lower for 3 and the perception changes.

Hi I saw a review which mentioned that the 4’s are more geared to LDAC’s versus the 3’s. So the question is did you use a LDAC player when playing the 4’s? Thanks great review. 🤗

These videos are amazingly informative!

Everyone needs to remember they both use the exact same drivers, the sound differences are only down to the hardware eq that is applied. If you want extra detail in the high end with xm3, just alter the EQ in the music app (tidal, amazon, Spotify all have eq). Same if you want more mid/bass in xm4. Oh, also the Xm3 can connect via Bluetooth to a different device and remain connected to your phone for calls at the same time, whilst keeping ldac codec. On XM4 if you connect two devices for audio you'll lose ldac and be forced down to sbc. This is a limitation of Bluetooth 5.0. No headphones will allow two audio sources in ldac at the same time, if they claim to, they're lying. I personally don't think with the current Bluetooth 5 limitations it's worth spending the extra on the xm4. If you're not bothered about Ldac why don't you just buy a pair of lower end headphones because ldac is the sole reason these cost as much as they do. They are also built for ldac. Rant over.

Hey Aaron, I have the XM2s. Should I upgrade to the XM4s or the XM3s given your binaural test results? The XM3s just sound less tinnier than XM4s - unless they've got any software upgrades.

The difference is quite extreme. I can't imagine the XM4 sounds this thin. I don't owe any of these but this can't be.

The frequency response graph of the XM4 shows an elevated (too much) bump in the mid-treble range causing that peakiness\harshness sound that you're hearing.

I just listened on my ATH-M50x wired headphones and on the second and third songs the vocals were not as loud on the 4 but not necessarily worse in clarity. I haven’t listened to the 4 yet, but I have a set coming. My understanding is that eq settings can really enhance the 4. I’ll see this week. I really like my Sennheiser PXC 550 ii, but the smart control app needs a firmware update and that isn’t possible with IOS 14 at this time. So it’s quirky, but I can make changes, though labored. It’s base will thump on the director acoustical setting.

I had actually tried out both the xm3 and xm4 at the same shop and choose the xm3 eventually. The xm3 sounds more natural and accurate to me especially the mids. The xm4 has definitely cut some mid bass to make the mids clearer but way to much that makes the high mid a bit harsh and unnatural. This is especially obvious when listening to the rock instrumental during this test. Btw I'm listening to this test on my xm3.

Wow, that was a revelation for sure! XM3's sounded way better in my opinion...far more natural sounding, deeper bass and overall a much better listening experience...especially with vocals! I'm actually having to think to get the XM3's now!

Does XM3 sound better due to aptX and AptX HD than XM4 (that does not have these codecs) and these codecs are easily recognized by Android, Apple and Windows (Microsoft)?

Just for the record. This sounds like the default Equalizer for the xm4. I customised mine and the sound is really good. I even tested both headsets in the store and the xm3 only has better bass and not such dramatic advantages over the xm4 like in this vid

Xm4’s are a step behind when the bass is the subject. It also gives you the feeling that you lose lots of different frequencies while the song switches to the xm4’s. It’s quite disappointing for me.

Really need to judge like that especially when there is a full spectrum equalizer that tailors the sound to how you like it very effectively? I returned the xm3 and probably will be keeping these xm4 as the multiple pairing is important to me as well.

If I'm in doors how do these sound when there's pipeline road work done. Will these block them enough if I'm wearing these and air conditioning blasting?

I had them both. My M50xBT completely made my xm3 sounded muddy, but when I got the xm4. I knew I had to sell them both since the xm4 has best of both worlds in sound quality and comfort. The song at 7:20 onwards is a good representation of the difference between xm3 and xm4, the funny thing is the song itself is really harsh on the mids that made the xm3 sounded better because the bass drowned some of the mids which is a trap lol

The xm4s definitely have a wider sound stage but it lacks in some clarity in a few frequencies thus i really do prefer the xm3

I own both pair and I absolutely love both you cant go wrong with either pair but I have been using the xm4s for a few now havent touched the xm3s i think the xm4s

While listening on my Arctis 3 Bluetooth 2019 Edition and switching back and forth between your video and the original song on Spotify (+custom EQ), I found that my Arctis 3 sounds better than XM3, cleaner but closer than XM4, not as wide as XM4, and the bass is not quite as deep as the XM4. I'm not sure if XM4 is worth 380 EUR to me.

What about hissing/white noise when playing nothing on them both?

Indeed. The MX3 has nicer, more balanced sound, where you can enjoy all the ranges, while the MX4 crushed the mids, the bass is boosted AF and there's too much high. It kills my ears, wtf?

I appreciate this video, but I'm not sure if your recordings help choose between either of these headphones. Both sounded moffed. But, for me, the XM3 sounded a bit better, based on these video. I'm about to "retire" my Taotronics 46, and I'm undecided between the xm3 and the xm4, so these kind of videos you make, are essencial for my decision.

I listened once more with my Philip’s Fidelio X2HR wired headphones, and I have to say both the 3 and 4 sounded better on these than the Sennheiser or Audio Technica. I got these on sale for a steal and they are great. I would love to set them up with an amp, etc, but I’m stuck with IPad and IPhone right now

Hi Aaron getting there, there is something wrong on the upper mids and bass on the XM4’s, on the last track treble was very indistinct, cymbols and hhats nope. Are you using in cup monitors or using a skull stand?

With the DSEE Extreme and ANC off the only thing I can think of is some strange post DAC processing going on?

the XM4 singer's voice is bit narrower to the front, while the XM3 the singer's voice are wider from front to the behind, you can tell how wider is. like more than 220deg wide, but i haven't test the actual XM4 unit itself.. been listening with XM3. and this video

Hey Aaron, Can you please compare DROP + THX PANDA WIRELESS HEADPHONE with Sony XM4 and Bose Nc700? I understand the DROP THX does not have ANC but I heard it has absolutely great audio signatures and sound staging. Also if you can add the BOOM mic with the equation it will be magnificent. I know there could be a good amount of wait time because of the fact you cannot buy them outright. But if you could arrange them for comparison it would be really great.

How many hours are on the M3's vs the M4's? Being new the M4's probably don't have many play hours on them - they need a good 50-100 hours to break in. The M3's are likely well played over the last couple of years - so they are nicely broken in. I had the same reaction to the M3's when I first got them, they were "tight" and needed break-in time. For me I could tell the improvement after a few days and they just kept getting better. I'd expect the M4's to follow the same break-in results as I experienced with the M3's. Please give them both another comparison in a few weeks of play time - at least 50 hours - and see if we can hear the improvement in comparison.

I owned the XM4 and use them with Spotify on iPhone 11 Pro and MBP2018. However, the sound quality seems worse than the Sony MDR-100ABN, and dynamics are weak. I think that the AAC codec may be the reason, as Apple does not support LDAC. Do you recommend me to acquire a music player (i.e., Fiio M11,) and a subscription in Tidal, for example, to achieve the highest quality of the XM4? Best regards from Chile

You have to use the headphones several times to open the sound and be patient maybe after 30 times the sound would be better. If you have android use them in SBC to change the bass and litle bit the EQ of the Sony app. If you have Sony device use LDAC for better performance at meantime in the Apple use in SBC to don't forget the DSEE-HX turn on. This kind strange feeling about the sound happen to me in the M3 in the 10 times I I use in android device after 30 times of charge now it's much better.

Yep Aaron..... I agree the xm4 sounded better ( clearer and more detailed ) I’ve saved up my $$ and now I’ve narrowed it down to the xm4 and momentum 3. All I really care about is sound I wouldn’t use the noise canceling hardly at all I’m 57 years old and just want to relax with my music mainly at home.. I like acoustic type stuff ( Guitar and piano) and all types of jazz I’ve watched all the KZread comparisons on the momentum 3’s vs Sony 3 & 4’s and basically I’m just confused some saying one over the other and others saying different. I’ve been using my 3 year old $75 Sony ch700 and really enjoy them but now have the funds to get something else.. Anybody have thoughts about it .. I appreciate it..... Blessing Greg

I think the sony 1000 xm3 sound warmer in the midrange Department like I won't get listening fatigue with the xm3. And somebody tell (V Moda) to wake up Now.

According to the frequency response graph on Rtings.com it looks like the XM4s have a much better frequency response in the treble and should sound much better. I own the XM3s, haven’t heard the 4s yet.

Listened at your sound comparison using my DT 990 Pro. And i must say that there is not a single song that sounded better on the XM4 compared to the XM3. In fact they all sounded A LOT better on the XM3. Special mention to the 3rd one that sounds completely awful on the XM4. I must say that i m extremely surprised by this result after listening at all of the XM4 video reviews on KZread. There must still be something really wrong with the sound that you record because the sound difference between both the XM3 and the XM4 is way too important when most people that i ve listened and that reviewed the XM4 say that there isn't that much of a sound difference between both and even say that they feel that the XM4 sounds a little better. Wich is VERY far away from what people experienced with your sound comparison. Now that being said i d be very interested to have the sound from the Momentum 3 reviewed in an updated sound comparison video with this headphone once that you ll have solved your current sound recording issue.

3:45 to 3:55 is the duration where you will find the difference clearly. the boominess of xm3 is clearly defined here.

it look like clearaudio+ on xm3 auto on..and xm4 look like we need to manually turn on clearaudio+ on app

something has to be wrong in your setup. I cant immagine the m4s sounding THAT Bad... listening on a hires device and dac myself and they dont sound right

Finally picked up a pair of the M4s today. The sound quality is superb (sounds like having a stereo Hi-fi on my head....literally sex for my ears 😂), and the ANC is fantastic. Build quality and design is total class too.

Wow are you videos THOROUGH!! I could definitely hear the difference between the two headphones and think the XM4's are improved!! The XM4's sound cleaner and crisper...slightly higher tones too....it seems most of the comments favored the XM3's but to me they sounded more muffled...but great job! Thanks ;-)

On first and third song, I much prefer the XM3. On the XM4, it hurts my ears -- too much treble?? On the 2nd music, I didn't find much of a difference.

Cool now I don’t have to bother spending for xm4 I just got xm3 recently too! I’m set for next years to come for a very well made midrange headphones 🎧

To me it sounds like the xm3 are louder than the xm4.

Xm3 Wider sound stage, not as "clear", a warmer sound with a bit more body/substance, bit louder bass, good job in mids, okay highs Xm4 overall a crisper and "clearer" sound, but almost sounds oversaturated in this, results in glassy/brittle sound. Smaller sound stage, softer bass, great job in mids and better highs. Both are great. Thank you for the content! 👍

I cannot wait for you to test the Jabra 75t with their upcoming firmware... I read Jabra will add noise cancelling which is a nice bonus.

Are you sure you were running the XM3 and XM4 on the same Bluetooth codec? The XM4 don't support aptx-hd anymore, they instead rely on LDAC for quality. If your phone doesn't support LDAC, it fall backs to SBC which is very bad quality. LDAC is even a better coded compared to aptx-hd. I have the feeling that you ran the XM4 on SBC.

Vocals and high tones (Hihats) better on the XM3 in my opinion. Bass is a bit too much on the XM3, but you can adjust this with the Sony App or an EQ.

The different sound between those two (XM3 much better ) have probabbly to do with the Surround VPT that you can used on the XM3 but not in the XM4 because that's gone in this XM4. So many users are dissepointed (after upgrade) because these opportunity is gone.

So I was listening on OPPO PM-3's with a JDS Labs Atom amp. I'm not quite an audiophile and I don't have golden ears but here's what I got: the PM-3 on its own with a straight listen to these tracks (through Spotify etc) was very neutral with bass taking a slight back seat; separation and detail/clarity was magnificent and nothing overpowered anything else. The XM3 sounded midbass heavy on all 3 tracks but pretty detailed and no sibilance. The XM4 sounded almost tinny in comparison. It sounds like Sony tried to bring out detail by just boosting highs but it came across almost as compressed and with some artifacting noise. Even though the bass backed off on the XM4, the bass seemed to extend lower than the XM3. The difference in bass and highs was just too stark between the two headphones. I would like if we could just average the two 😬. Take some of the midbass out of the 3 and take some of those fatiguing highs out of the 4. I'd take the 3 because of the lower price and could probably eq to make it more neutral. Just my opinion 🙃

Honestly it sounds like you forgot to put on the ANC on the M4s to be honest. Bc the XM3s sounds like that when the ANC is off, Kinda flat!

For me, the XM4 sounded more like the Bose NC 700 on the overall spectrum, becoming a bit clearer, brighter, flatter, but losing some of the "roundedness", the immersive quality of the XM3. Great work on the binaural recordings.

I prefer xm3 for vocal than xm4. Music, i still prefer xm3 as xm4 kind of sounded a bit higher pitch which not comfortable for long listening.

I have used both headphones.... lower bass on M3 is much better than M4 but mid bass and mid bass vibration has more oomph in M4. A little sacrifice in Lower bass of M4 headphone gets you noticeably clear treble which rise and shine and wider sound stage. M4 is also louder than M3. In these recordings M4 looks to have a tinnier audio that's because of sound stage which is wider than M3 and mics are not able to distinguish 3D sound of M4 over M3. As a result, these recordings show M4 sound to be tinnier, more over M3 sound is muddier than M4 if you raise bass on both headphones M3 gets even more muddier but M4 gets more vibration than M3 and no muddy presentation and almost no sacrifice in Audio Quality.

I like the sound of the xm3 more. I find there is more space in the music, a wider stage.

EDIT: I returned by XM4s and Amazon sent me another pair. I was ready to return these too but I tried them on and surprisingly they sounded a heck of a lot better than the previous pair. So I guess what I received earlier had a manufacturing defect? The new pair sounds a lot closer to the XM3s and I could get them to sound a lot better with the SoundID app on Android. I wish I'd seen this video before I bought the XM4. I already have the XM3 and I figured XM4 could only get better but boy oh boy was I wrong. The XM4s sound like a pair of really cheap headphones. XM3 is miles ahead in terms of audio quality. Seems like Sony added lots of bells and whistles to XM4 and didn't pay a lot of attention to the one and only most important aspect of headphones... the SOUND QUALITY! The XM4s sound as if you're listening to the music through a telephone. They're so tinny and annoying sounding. Moreover, if you use them as wired headphones with the headphones turned on, they sound absolutely like garbage with the sound clipping everywhere. In this case, old is gold and the XM3s are in my opinion, a 100 times better by comparison.

Is it just me or xm3's sounded without update just as bad...? no bass hurting highs etc... though its bit different now, but updates change a lot... you never know until you try that update. On some reviews even anc got worse, like louder 1kHz noise than with anc off, it all depends on actual software...

Don’t forget though the sound is going to be every different on KZread as well as the EQ can be set to personal taste so I would try before you buy rather than just go by a KZread vid but that’s just my opinion

The XM3 has deeper bass and it sounds like a real Sony. Now I’m having doubts with my XM4 as it feels like it sounded like a bit of a Bose on this video. 😂
