A couple of things I feel like you missed / got wrong: [4:52] The Bose also have "the sort of swipe feature going on". [6:09] The speak-to-chat feature on the Sonys can be toggled on-the-fly by holding two fingers on the touchpad. So you don't have to go into the app every time. Bose just updated its Bose 700 app with an added EQ and the sound is great 👍. I was a little bit disappointed at first because I purchased the Bose 700 a three weeks ago and the music sound was flat and ordinary but now I'm freaking happy. I can manipulate the bass, mids and treble with the minus 10 and higher 10. The sound has been greatly improved. I do recommend the Bose 700 for a better NC feature and music sound with the new EQ feature added.

I don't understand why people like Sony's sound signature. To me, everything sounded very muffled and base heavy when Bose's sound is clear and can be fine-tuned in the app. Tried to do the same with Sony and wasn't able to adjust it to my liking.

I don’t disagree but why do you think the M4 wins? I think if the Bose had an EQ (which it does but in broken firmware updates that aren’t available) then it could still compete with the XM4. A couple of features I would like to see on the Bose that the Sony has is the voice detection and auto pause when you take them off. All the smart location stuff I just find puts you in the wrong mode most of the time but you can turn that off.

I had 2 pair of the XM3s and they were, to put it mildly, garbage, compared to the 700s. There was a noticeable white noise in the Sony's that I've never experienced in a Bose product, including the 700s, and a jarring clicking sound in the XM3s while riding the train every day, that I've never experienced in the Bose. I looked on forums and a lot of other people complained about this, so I returned mine and went with the 700s. I hope Sony fixed these problems with the XM4s, but the Bose also always felt more "premium", I think mainly due to the metal band and the way the finish on the outside of the ear cups doesn't feel as "plasticy" as the XM3s. What is your feeling when comparing the 700s material feel to the XM4s? That being said, I can see the XM4s being really nice if they fixed the ANC problems the XM3s were having.

  • @oliverpolden

    @oliverpolden

    3 жыл бұрын

@@AndrewHosford I haven't experienced any deal breaker issues yet with the XM4s like what you have mentioned with the XM3. The XM4s have that rubber coating that tends to turn into a sticky mess after a few years. The XM4s do have a more plastic feel but it's a good quality plastic feel, the cup swivels are so smooth it feels like they have bearings, presumably this will stop any clicks that result from static friction being overcome. The Bose mostly look as new as the day I got them except for the headband where it directly rests on my bald head. It has a slight wave to it now. The cup padding on the Bose is amazingly uniform with no waves. The Sony has a couple of small waves, mainly at the top and bottom of the cups. I have identified an issue with the headband ratchet on the Sony. It's lighter for extending than contracting and in my opinion too light. The headband is ever so slightly too big for my not super small head so I always have the headband on the smallest setting and on multiple occasions the headband has slipped a notch or two. I would say the build quality is by no means bad, it's very good, but there is a bit of room for improvement. Lastly, I never had the XM3s but I haven't identified any specific issues with the ANC on the XM4. It still has the brown noise and passthrough is nowhere near as good as the virtually completely natural experience with the Bose where they sound like you're not wearing them. That said, the XM4 does have a "focus on voice" feature which should make voices more prominent against background noise but I haven't specifically tested that yet.

@@oliverpolden Awesome rundown! A couple complaints I do have about the Bose: the ear cups slide down the band a little more easily than I would like. When I'm being active and the headphones are jiggling around on my head, sometimes they loosen up a bit too much, and I have to adjust them to get them to ride higher up on my ears. And sometimes they don't stop whatever music or podcast or whatever I'm listening to on my phone when I turn them off, so the phone starts playing that music/podcast/etc really loudly in my pocket. It's been a bit embarrassing a few times that's happened at work.

I have done extensive side by side testing of the ANC on both the XM4 and the NC700. Going so far as to have one Sony cup on one ear and one Bose cup on the other. I have used simulated plane noise, simulated cafe noise. I have boiled my kettle, I have a water pump for my bathroom, I've just had my neighbour trimming his fence with a jigsaw right outside my window, I've tested typing on my keyboard. I cannot for the life of me say that the XM4 is definitively better as some people seem to so decisively conclude. I have not yet (while using the XM4): Been in a car, on a train, on a real plane, in a real cafe. The cancelling is almost identical, literally, they sound pretty much exactly the same. Where they differ is in what I call the noise floor. The Sony produces an audible brown or atmospheric noise which can mask but not cancel noise thereby making them seem as though the NC is better but if you listen carefully, the outside noise is at about the same level as on the Bose. The Bose pretty much has no noise floor and is virtually silent. The passthrough on the Sony is actually louder and more cluttered than reality which gives you a greater contrast between passthrough and NC, again this could give you the perception that the NC on the Sony is better. By contrast, the Bose sounds as though you're not wearing them and therefore the passthrough is not as loud as the Sony passthrough. My conclusion is that the NC on both is for all intents and purposes identical and should not be a factor in your purchase decision process. Also, once you're playing something, I guarantee you won't be able to tell any difference. I truly welcome any feedback from others that currently have both headphones for a side by side comparison, especially specific examples of types of sounds that I will be able to confirm. I think one of the most valuable side by side comparisons would be on a real plane, arguably one of the most important use cases for these headphones. Recordings of the headphones are not a reliable comparison, there are too many variables involved: Microphone response, level equalisation, pre-processing, post-processing, export processing, KZread pre-processing, KZread post-processing/streaming quality, your own headphone response. Real life audio has way more data than any recording, all these systems are designed to minimise that data so at each step they can remove it.

You are right when you say anc produced by both headphones are nearly identical but the thing is even though Sony offers more noise cancellation the Bose just offers it with more quality as if you’re really feeling yourself being isolated from the world whereas with the Sony’s I just feel like I’m putting my hands over my ears

The Sonys were on a very good sale on Amazon so even though I've already had the Bose for quite a while and am happy with them I decided to get the Sonys to try them both. Here's my take. The Sonys have WAY more features and the phone app is miles better. There's just absolutely no contest there. It handles switching between two bluetooth devices far better than the Bose, which can sometimes get hung up on either my phone or computer and refuse to switch even though no audio is playing on the device I want it to switch away from. Bose out of the box doesn't sound as good at first glance, but the app has a very rudimentary equalizer now which with some tweaking puts them both basically identical as far as sound, imo, and if you're primarily using them with a computer (as I am), getting a more robust equalizer for windows provides even more incredible results. I was driving myself crazy trying to hear any difference which means there probably isn't one. I think any perceived difference in sound quality is because Sony's phone app just has many more and better EQ presets and their default EQ sounds brighter and fuller and less neutral, rather than an actual difference in driver quality. Bose has noticeably better noise cancelling, for ME is noticeably more comfortable (VERY much disagree in this regard but my head is on the smaller side so ymmv), and the build quality is just far better, it feels far more solid and has that full metal headband, whereas the Sonys feel very light and hollow and plastic-ey, they definitely do not feel premium. Ultimately I don't care THAT much about the features the Sony has, except for the whole put your hand on the earcup to start hearing outside sounds which is FANTASTIC and I do wish the Bose had, so I prefer the greater comfort, noise cancelling, and build quality of the Bose and I'm planning to give away the Sonys as a gift to a friend. But both of them are very good headphones and I don't think anybody will be massively disappointed that they chose one over the other.

Thanks for the review. A couple of things.... 1. yes, press and hold power button to turn on takes a little getting used to. But it's a feature to ensure that you don't turn it on accidentally. I've used the 1000xm3 and it never bothered me. 2. Pressing and holding power button for 5 or 7 seconds when it's off to trigger pairing mode... well, how many times do you pair your headphones with a new device? Most people do it for a few devices initially. You won't need to pair after that. Yes, both these points are valid, but both are also no big deal. I have never heard any other reviewers mentioning these. Obviously, they don't feel that these issues are relevant at all. As for the active noise cancelling capability, I do feel that it has something to do with individual's head. I've seen a few reviews on the XM4 vs 700, most gave the xm4 better rating for ANC than the 700. Thanks again!

So I got the Bose 700 thinking it has the best sound quality and then saw all these reviews and had them exchanged to Sony XM4. Used them for a few days and eventually ended up returning the XM4 and getting Bose 700 back!! Here is my experience. So I felt that Sony XM4s are basically just LOUDER than Bose 700s and that is what people perceive as better sound. I mostly listen to Urdu/Hindi/Punjabi and some English songs and for me, vocals matter a lot. I like to feel every singer's unique sound and all other background instruments, and that is where Bose does not have any comparison. I felt that Bose's sound is amazingly clear and you can hear all the notes and every instrument, whereas Sony digitally amplifies the sound, gives you a lot of bass but makes the overall sound muddied and especially the vocals get clouded. They were also giving me earache after listening for a while. The Bose app also does a pretty good job at increasing the bass, and I agree, if Bose did not have this app to amplify the bass, these headphones would have sounded pretty flat for music. The app does a great job increasing the bass to enjoyable levels while still preserving the clarity and quality of sound. Sony's app and equalizer are great, but again, they digitally modify the sound too much (in my opinion) and the originality is lost and I would get an earache with these XM4. So to sum up, if you enjoy finer things in life, Bose is for you - but if you like listening to loud rock, metal and similar music genres and are not worried about the quality of vocals and other finer subtle instrument sounds, go for the Sony.

I agree. Bought the xm4’s but sent them back because the exerted too much pressure both around my ears and on my crown. It was uncomfortable from 5 minutes on. Now I got the nc700’s. Of course this is personal but to me they’re much more comfortable. And of course, by now the price dropped. I know someone who bought them for €250 a month ago but the price recently went up again. Thanks for a very thorough review. I was considering which headphones to get. For me, I'll have to go with the bose for a couple reasons. As much as I'd like to get the sonies the bose headphones I can pay off in payments, and I can't do that with the soni headphones. I keep hearing in all the comments how comfortable the sonies are compared to the bose. I think for $400 the bose would be comfortable enough for me. I'm sure they wouldn't feel uncomfortable if I wore them for long periods of time. I know you can do different EQ settings in the bose app so I'm sure I would like the sound, but if the bass isn't good enough for me, I could just return them. I also like the fact, that if I have questions, I can get in touch with Bose customer service and getting hold of anyone at soni is difficult. Besides, there isn't any reason why someone couldn't have both headphones. I listen to a lot of bluegrass and classic country and there isn't a lot of bass in that music anyway. I also like with the bose headphones, the touch gestures seem very intuitive. I've heard that the play/pause gesture is a single finger double tap. This gesture will also hang up or answer calls. I'm very familiar with a similar gesture of a 2 finger double tap which is a gesture that I use in voice over all the time. I'm totally blind so I use voice over to use my iPhone 8. I also think which headphone is best is a very individual preference. Thanks again for a great review.

Could not decide, so bought both...I'm not into heavy bass at all, but the Sony's do sound more exciting. Lack of equaliser on the Bose is very poor at this price point considering their competition. I have not done any technical tests but would probably give the ANC to Bose despite what others say. One thing I love about the Bose is the sleek design, I don't wear these outside so not looking to make a fashion statement but holding it prior to putting it on my head puts a smile on my face, it is just extremely sleek and well thought out. I think they are more comfortable than the Sony's too. Was planning to sell the one I disliked the most, but I like them both so much in different ways I may end up keeping both.

Great review, me personally, I had the Bose 700 and returned them last week upon receiving the MX4's. Several reasons why, first the clamping force on the Bose was very uncomfortable to my head, had to continually remove them due to the pressure. Second the multiparing on the Bose just never worked properly, when two devices were connected the audio would cut out constantly. Something that as I have read is a software issue that hasn't been resolved for 5 months by Bose. Third the Bose 700 audio highs where sometimes piercing to my ears, with no equalizer to adjust it, it would hurt my ears to listen for a prolonged period of time. I was a Bose guy, but the 700s really need some work. The Sonys are much better in the same areas, very happy with the sound quality on these.

  • @oliverpolden

    3 жыл бұрын

@@jadbhamdouni7jb Sure. So to be clear it is very close between the XM4 and the NC700 and I don't think it should really influence purchase decision. I most certainly would say it's not clear which is better. Starting with passthrough, I find it to be unbelievable on the NC700, it's like you're not even wearing them. On the XM4 you get a lot of what I can only explain as environmental/atmospheric noise/hiss. It's not hiss like the older noise cancelling headphones, it's more like brown noise so it's not unpleasant. Some frequencies are amplified too much, some less so, e.g. you can really hear your clothes rustling as you walk. The passthrough on the XM4 doesn't sound natural. With the Bose NC700, when you turn NC on, they for all intents and purposes become silent (assuming there's no background noise or a very predictable not too loud noise, e.g. my projector fan becomes inaudible even if I'm only a couple of feet away). When you activate NC on the XM4 you get brown noise, it's not that loud but you can definitely hear it. The XM4 seems like it has more adaptive NC, so depending on the noise it thinks it hears it will change how it cancels it out. You can hear these changes (if you're not listening to music). You can sometimes hear these changes say if you're listening to KZread videos or just speech, especially if the video is quieter or nothing at all. I personally find it a bit distracting. The NC700 remains consistent. For about 97% of sounds I'm sure they're as good as each other but I haven't had the XM4 long enough to figure out in what scenarios it's supposedly better. The XM4 might be better with more random noises at higher frequencies but I haven't used them enough yet to work out if that is correct. The reason I believe the Bose NC is better is because you don't get the brown (or whatever colour) noise and it seems consistent and therefore less distracting. I should probably start saying that I prefer the NC on the Bose, not that it is necessarily better. The brown/pink/white noise will also mask outside noise which may or may not be a good thing. Your ears will eventually get used to the brown noise to the point that you don't really hear it any more unless you specifically listen for it. Anyway, most people will probably be happier with the XM4, they sound much more enjoyable even if they may not sound as natural or technically as good (which is debatable). The XM4 does punch up the bass a bit but at least it has an EQ unlike the Bose which doesn't. When I originally reviewed the Bose I mentioned that despite how good they sounded, I felt that there was something lacking that I couldn't put my finger on. When I say lacking, I just didn't get as much of a "wow" as I thought I would for that price. One last thing that occurred to me was that perhaps because the passthrough mode on the XM4 is that much worse than the NC700, it possibly sounds louder or more chaotic. When you then put it into NC mode, that clatter is gone and you get an "ahhh" moment. You don't get such an "ahhh" moment with the Bose because the passthrough is so natural and doesn't sound noisy, clattery... Hope that helps. I'd say if you listen to a lot of spoken word then the Bose NC may be better for that, otherwise they're pretty equal.

However the sonys don't work while charging anyway so a short cable to a laptop port seems ideal. And if I needed a long cable I could borrow my samsung phone charger/cable. What am I missing? My sennheiser are getting 4-5 years old and battery life is diminishing, ear muffs are looking poor so I'm seriously considering the xm4. What I've read about the new momentum3 doesn't sound like enough of a step forward to be a contender.

Well, to be fair, they both do an excellent job, and the differences are so subtle that you have a hard time telling which one is better. So, it's normal that ones can say that one is better and others the other

@@Brad901 Hi Brad. This is precisely why I chose the Sony model. I will never get on an airplane or be on a train or in a crowd so for me at home, I needed a good headset for music/netflix enjoyment. Also, to be used easily between two different devices and most of all, for zoom/web conference calls. Although I'm contemplating the new 5K iMac which has a great web cam/microphone, I also looked into top of the line web cams. The headset and microphone combo is a really good one. I can say if you have a Yeti or something better than what I have, you'll be very pleased with the result. My sister on the iPhone said my headset sounded like I was in stereo. She loved it. Hope that helps you make the right decision.

Great video. While I do like the Bose brand better overall, I can't deny that between these 2 options, the Sony XM4 is arguably better than the Bose NC 700. However, do you think Bose will release new headphones this year in 2021 (Soundlink II released in 2015 I think, QC 35 II in 2017, and NC700 in 2019, seemingly a trend of new model every 2 years?), and thus do you think it would be wise to hold off on buying the Sony XM4s right now just to see if Bose releases anything new later this year?

I changing from Bose to Sony because two important things: 1. Components quality, all my latest Sony headphones are aging prove, but Bose is disappointing, the ear cups are extremely bad, without a continuous use the deterioration is terrible and each replacement cost 40 US dollars. I suffer similar quality issues with in ear Bose headphones, bad quality in general, things broken or attached with glue, poor quality in an excellent design 2. Comfort and pain, Bose noise cancelling is painful for me, the pressure is terrible and with long use the damage will be associate with acoustic health problems. In other hand Sony noise cancelling didn't produce me this painful sensation, the control of noise cancellation is better implemented for Sony.

I disagree about the sound quality section. I bought both and compared side by side. I found the Sony to be slightly unpleasant (across various genres) and Bose to be silky smooth. I am not an audio engineer, but am a listener with an appreciation for nuance. I loved (and love! Now have had it for ~1 year) the sound quality of the Bose.

You're good! I appreciate the honesty of your takes and evaluations. In someone else's video, we listened in a noisy environment in real-time to SONY WM4 vs BOSE700, and the noise-cancellation of the SONY was immediately, noticeably superior to the BOSE.

Thanks for a great review. I have the XM4's and am extremely happy with them. It would have been even better if you included a comment on the carry cases for each headphone. The Sony's case is excellent but may not fit a longer cable. Also, the Sony does not come with an adapter for 3.5mm stereo to 6.5mm. Not sure about the Bose.
