Wow!! How compact the mechanism became at that time! I was 15t when I´ve got my 1st ´slim´ Betamax. So heavy and full of layers of circuits and metal parts with wires. Now all that is in the palm of our hand. Great video! Thank you.

I didn't know SVHS recordings couldn't be played on a regular VHS. I have quite a few VHS decks, one being an SVHS and I tried that myself once. I recorded something onto an SHVS cassette in the SHVS VCR, then I played it back on one of my "normal" VCRs and it played fine. I guess the "normal" VHS I used must have had that feature to be able to play back an SVHS recording, so I just thought all VHS decks could play back an SVHS recording.

A few days ago I went to visit my nephew and showed me a Supernintendo game set, so I tried to play Star Fox, but in a modern 42' HD tv set, there is a delay or lag that makes those consoles unplayable in modern equipment, due to the response on screen must be quicker, so an old TV set is needed to make it run properly, That is a missadvantage carried out by new technology.

The VCR I still have is the SLV-N71 which seems identical to this except it's black and doesn't have the "Reality Generator." It does have a custom mod that someone did to it with a little LED and push-button that's labeled "Auto Repeat." I've never bothered figuring out exactly what that button does or why it's there. I presume it was either for recording security camera footage or playing a demo tape over and over in a store.

I notice it says "19 micron head". Does this mean it had a 19 micron head in addition to the standard 58 micron head or JUST 19 micron heads? If it has only 19 micron heads, you gain nothing by recording on SP rather than EP. If you record on SP with 19 micron heads you have 2/3 of your tape blank afterward. VHS was terrible and nothing would reverse the damage from recording to VHS except for time-base correction (pretty much the only degradation that could be rectified). The horrible color resolution and limited luminance resolution were things that nothing could reverse.

We had a couple of PAL Matsui and Orion VCRs in the Mid 90's that looked very similar to this with the auto-headcleaning and the pinch roller that was lifted out of place during eject. I liked the sound of the fast forward and rewind with the ramp up to full speed and then nice slow down towards the end of the tape.

I like how both sony & philips tried to bring the vcr tape into the digital age by putting video enhancers and recording tracking marker features into their final vcr decks. Am mean the idea to make a enhanced vcr tape of being close as dvd in quality, reliability and ease of use was there. Just amezing. Now i do own a philips vcr from 2000 or so with dspc feature wich supposedly should reduce noise but my old video tapes still look very grainy, so it makes no sence i guess ,it’s just a gimmick idea.

Hey, I have one of these! We got one NEW in early 2002 with our 5-disc DVD changer and Sony KV-36XBR450 36" XBR Trinitron HDTV, of which in 2008 saw its first 1080i HD signals through a very nice Motorola tuner provided by Comcast we still have to this day. I have a second of those TVs here in storage in the basement with a much sharper picture, probably from less use as an SDTV for years. the second set cost $12 at the thrift shop (and an hour getting it in the house and living room, and another hour getting it into the basement when the Dish HD34-310 AKA RCA D34W20 [ i.imgur.com/VkJon8J.jpg ] came into my life instead 6 months later) where the first was closer to $2700 in 2002, and then add on the original MSRP of the VCR and the DAV-C450 home theatre system I only have remnants of the speaker system from, but still have the DVD player... $150 for the VCR originally, and $300 for the home theater set-up. the VCR was used mostly to record episodes of Smallville on WB? in the early years of its life but went on to do as it is doing now: sit and gather dust. I set the time and date on it so I could set it to auto-record weekly at 8:55PM and end recording at 10:05 so to catch the next week preview clip as needed. I used the tape on the slowest record setting so I could fit a few weeks worth of episodes on one tape, rewound the tape monthly, and changed the tape out in the middle and at the end of the season. (mind you I was 11 or 12 when I was doing this, and Dad thought I was magic or something. this went on for a few years and many headaches re-setting the clock when the power went out.) Then the wonderful thing called On Demand became a thing and sent the VCR a-packing, to which the only things it's done since is play older movies we didn't have on DVD or old unmarked tapes to see what was on them. it has been sitting, untouched, for about 6 years now, unplugged, but still hooked to the TV via composite on input 3. I ended up using its coax connection on the split at the entertainment center for the cable modem when I relocated that and the other stuff connected past that. sort of useless to have it connected now when to use it in this day and age either means having it inline with an SDTV or getting its own converter box to run. Fun last note: I know it was early 2002 because i remember using the unboxing and setting-up of such as an excuse to get out of doing math homework. Go figure! I feel absolutely horrible admitting that, but hey, I'll feel a helluva lot better in the morning about it. The VCR, according to Amazon, was first available in 1999, so it lasted a few years on the market. if there isn't a datecode on the back, you can get a roundabout datecode off any of the chips inside and add about 4-7 months to taste due to fab-to-line lag. ========== (and, if you ever see one of those RCA/Dish TVs, and you can get a few guys to help you get a 175+lb HDTV into your house, DO IT IF THE PRICE IS RIGHT, e.g. under 50 bucks. the DVI port on the back is amazing, and supports HDCP, so no unnecessary defeater converter to hook up modern equipment aside from just using one of the two component inputs. just make sure the source has working seperate audio out from HDMI to plug into the DVI RCA audio-in jacks and you're golden. )

Would you know a website to find OEM remotes for old VCRs? I have a fairly nice JVC HR-VP58U (I think, I'll have to check the exact model number when I get back to my apartment) that I got at a Goodwill. In order to program the VCR to record certain stations at certain times, I need the original remote to access all the functions. Also, the JVC site says this model has "quasi S-VHS playback" which I think means it plays S-VHS without having the static lines that you experienced. I bought it because I'm a financially-limited college student with basic cable in my apartment, having left full-feature cable and TiVo back at may parent's place. I wanted a cheap and easy way to watch shows that come on past when I stay up so I can see them the next morning before classes. I ordered a BNS Sony blank tape from 2001 to use but its basically useless without the remote.

Ebay should have been my first guess, haha. Shouldn't it have a built in tuner? I have already hooked the coaxial from the wall into the VCR and then ran composite to the tv and I can surf channels using the channel up/down buttons on the front of the VCR. BTW, its a JVC HR-VP672U. Edit: Found a PDF of the user manual and yes, theres a TV tuner with auto channel scan. jvc.en-manual.com/d-hr-vp672u/user-s-manual.html?page=14

+André Campana Merétika - Sony made VHS machines for a long span of time. They had to eventually "give in" to its popularity. In 1988, Sony itself began marketing VHS under a policy of supplying both formats (VHS and Beta). Deputy president Masaaki Morita, who had worked nonstop on promoting home-use VCRs since around 1972, put it this way to employees, "Speaking frankly, we didn't want to manufacture VHS. However, you don't conduct business according to your feelings. Let's look at reality. The demand is getting stronger in the marketplace for Sony-made VHS products. Even if we have to bite the bullet, we ought to begin manufacturing VHS products for the sake of future growth. In any event, Sony aims to posture itself as the number one comprehensive VCR manufacturer, with Betamax for high quality picture and recording, 8mm formats for optimal compact personal use, and VHS for home video rental. Drawing on these strengths, we will be able to effectively respond to diverse consumer needs."
