    Nowadays i'm seeing it happen: all gears 'n stuff are made of plastic fantastic, so damn breakable in this 'throw away society'. Many years ago it wasn't like that: more durable and reliable. Some parts of these units aren't available anymore, it's just not worth to replace it anyway due to the costs of it so we throw it away and replace the whole unit, it's just simple as that. We praise the Lord that there are still some guys like Dave who still cherish their profession and their skills and love what they are doing. Keep up the good work man!

    You are correct. Most of these units are tossed away. Very few people still servicing electronics. It is a dying profession and many of the really good knowledgeable service engineers are, well... Dying.

    You've been a great help i repairing my Sony that is like that one... One question so far while I'm waiting for my blue gear that was broke. Placing the main cam gear back, you have those 3 notches, the small arm that has one notch for me to place is not in the same position as yours and I can't find what moves it. There is a small black pin that is pushing it up and the pin moves too close the center of the cam for it to drop in place. I can't see what moves that pin back. I also had to grease that same sticky worm gear post on the other side and that arm that sticks. I'm waiting on my part, cleaned up the contacts just seeing how it fits back and that might be the only problem I hope - cam gear placement. Thanks, Dennis

    What a great video! Love how you provide details on how to get the timing calibrated. I have had to clean-up the “P6-Guide” (I think that’s what it was called...?) as mine was also completely sealed up. Easy to do when you see how it’s done. Following that, I noticed that the unit will no longer rewind - Are there some troubleshooting steps that you would recommend I do to figure out why this is occurring? It looks and sounds like it wants to rewind, but the left wheel does not move, and after about a second, the unit retracts the tape back in the cassette and the only thing that can be done is to eject the cassette.

  • @tableseven8133
    @tableseven81334 жыл бұрын

    This gave me a clue at 30:40 and some other spots as to the problem with my SLV 585HF. The rewind side was not pulling the tape back in on eject or in reverse play. Problem is the gear mechanism between the reel hubs that big white thing at the bottom at this time line. that center part is supposed to spring back and forth. I worked it a little by hand and pushed around that center pivot clip. and now it no longer sticks and it will pull the tape back in before ejecting. No more eating tape. In the long run I assume I need to pull it off and remove the old grease. I put some Zoom spout oil on it for now. (sewing machine oil).

    Hi! I was wondering if you still repair VCRs for people if they send them to you? I bought a Sony and the roller guide arms were working fine and then out of no where they were stuck in the back and would no longer move forward to release the tape. I attempted to take a look at the gears but, there is a lot more I would have to take apart and at this point I feel like I really need help.

    I remember those days. We had a TV repairman take out the chassis out of our console tv a few times to take to the shop.. I always watched when he worked on our tv's at home. He warned me not to stick my hand in the tv, even if it was unplugged, because the picture tube would zap me. (That was when he took the chassis out) I wanted to be a TV repairman when I grew up. Didn't work out. Interesting stuff there!

    I had to order that blue gear and when I went to put the white gear back in, I got it in place but then the center pin that it fits on - pushed down where I couldn't get the snap on. So I took it off and tried again and it now keeps pushing in. When I did get the gear on and the snap on the pin - I started to put the large white gear on and as I rotated the gears it pulled that pin up making the gear vulnerable to being stripped. Do I need to glue that pin now? It has a perfect slip hole but nothing to hold it in place

    Hi, I need some advice if you don't mind, but first of all thank you for those vids, they helped me successfully replace two broken blue cogs on SLV-725 yesterday and on SLV-E9 two years ago. With former unit I have certain problems that I can't seem to tackle. First of all - while it plays, after like 10 minutes after cleaning of pinch roller, the picture starts slightly wavering horizontally, and stereo sound starts cutting out slightly, and gets worse as tape runs further. Uncleaned and at end of tape, wow and flutter is enormous in linear track. This is worse towards the end of tape as opposed to towards the start. Cleaning roller again gets it going again, even though it's not really dirty as seen by very slight amount of blackness seen on q-tip (I clean with q-tips soaked with pure isopropyl). What is the cause? Bad pinch roller? (it does have some slight shine to it but not really worse than on any other similarly old unit which runs fine). Perhaps too high backtension or something? I tried adjusting the pinch roller pressure by means of re-timing the loading cogs as they seemed to have been tampered with in past anyway. No avail I think, but I can make it worse that way and revert. Currently it's pressurised enough that I don't see reason to change further anyway. But current state is not really acceptable for any sort of normal use. Second problem, the front panel main controls (play, stop, ff, rew etc) are acting weirdly, buttons either do different functions than they're assigned to, or not work. Eject does not work altogether for example. But actual logic is fine as with remote control, all functions work as intended. Could that be some fried chip or something? Front panel has obviously been removed in past as evident by some wire soldered to one point and going to mainboard (compensation for missing trace? mod? dunno) and lacking few screws. As for other unit the E9, it works acceptably well after lots of tampering over time, however the drum has weird sound when turned by hand - scratchy one. Failing bearing? It works fine when it turns fastly by itself tho, but once has halted randomly and worked again later. Also on this one I've manually readjusted the tape path around drum as it was off initially (yet another machine that was been messed with prior), and while I got it to play all tapes I insert into it fine, and it plays what it records fine also, the tapes it recorded don't play properly (on one has noise band on top, for example) on some other units that otherwise play everything fine and are factory-adjusted. Play fine on some others. It is acceptable incompatability or is it still misadjusted?

  • @simtitan1
    @simtitan13 жыл бұрын

    Hello, I cleaned the half loading arm as shown in the video, and that now operates properly, but my unit fails to advance the tape at all during playback, but rewind and fast forward works. Mine also has the broken blue loading gear, but I'd assume that it should still move the tape even with that guide not working, am I correct? Would doing the blue gear swap fix this, or is there something else I should look into? Thank you in advance.

    I'm working on one now that has me stumped. Replaced the gear, cleaned the mode switch, verified all the timing. It will accept a tape, it will play, FF, RW, everything just fine. When I go to eject the tape, the capstan motor doesn't pull the excess tape back into the cassette. So it ejects just fine other than a giant loop of tape that hangs out. Any ideas?

    I have a Sony SLV-998HF that likely needs a new rubber capstan belt (it plays fine but won’t rewind or ff all the way or very quickly). There is no access door on the bottom like some units have, unfortunately. Because I’ll need to remove the mechanism to replace it, will I have to check the height of the same guide after reinstalling? The mechanism looks different (haven’t seen the blue gear in the schematics)

    @@captainprototype187 First thing you should always do is check if it does it with more than 1 tape. Believe it or not, it could be the tape. If it does it with all tapes then it could be a number of things. If it were me, I would start by cleaning the mode switch. While you're in there check the belt(s). Next, visually inspect the gears for damaged "teeth" or debris. Then check the timing marks and make sure they are lined up properly. Clean up and debris, dust, and excess grease and then apply some fresh grease. I would be willing to bet that there is a bad belt or idler tire. You should also check that the capstan bearing is good and check the pinch roller. This particular channel has dozens of VCR repair videos. 90 days ago I didn't know a damn thing about VCRs. Thanks to 12volt sharing his knowledge I have repaired close to 200 VCRs and resold them. The best advise I can give you is to take your time, take pictures so you know how to put it back together and be prepared to mess something up because it is inevitable.
