I bought one of those decks back in the nineties when sales of cassettes were waning. It seemed nice when it was new, but didn't last long. I think Sony knew everything was shifting to CD's and put better quality in their early CD players. I bought one of those and everything was made of metal even the drawer holding the CD was heavy metal. It was built to last.

Had that same mechanism in a ‘modern’ audioset this week, all 4 belts were bad, after replacing them the thing actually worked but even worse W&F than yours. Also had to replace all 4 pinchrollers with ‘similar’ ones from panasonic which i had laying around. Ended up with a W&F around 0,35%, so quite bad, but at least the thing worked! Tapedecks in the minisets from the early-mid ‘90s like the mhc610 and the likes were a heck of lot better (but also much more expensive) But lots of them had a cracked gear on the ‘mode control motor’ We wanted stuff cheap, so we got it cheap 😂 By the way: whats the problem with ‘ghettoblaster’?

One solution to the cracked gear: try to carefully open a little big the hole where the gear is attached to the motor pole. Once it was done, apply a droplet of superglue on the crack. The plastic tends to shrink over time and that's why that little demon is fractured.

Those shipping prices are insane. I know it's not the same thing but I can ship from the UK to continental Europe for under $15 for a tape deck-sized box. And that does include customs etc as the UK is no longer in the European customs area. And this thing is cheap. I recently bought a Sherwood twin-deck, a better unit than this one albeit a "lesser" brand, locally in a faulty state (but just needed belts) for £2.57 on a collect-only auction. There is no way on God's green Earth I'd spend even a tenth of the money you're talking about on this!

Got 2 mid 1990s Sony Walkmans, that have bad pinch rollers. It seems that Sony has had some bad rubber formulations in that period of time. These rollers get shiny quick, have no grip at all and cause inconsistent tape speed from beginning to end because of the changing takeup and supplier reel torque and they will probably turn into goo like belts soon too...

At the price of this late cassette era deck you could have bought a badly broken Teac or... a barely decent dinner for a family of 5. Most companies preferred to offer simpler electronics and controls but SONY exploiting their great expertise and production volume in integration and electronics design decided their 2nd most basic double cassette deck they'd be offering would have full logic control, Dolby B,C,HX Pro with the same high density head that was installed in upmarket models, although they might have been binned 1st choice, digital counters and all the convenience of remote control. It had absolutely respectable dynamic specs with the convenience of full remote control meaning you could play two tapes from side A to side B from the comfort of your sofa. Of course you could have bought something else (new) at that price point but it's highly likely it didn't sound any better and it would have been far less convenient: piano keys, analog tape counter, not remote controllable. Perhaps it would have been more reliable that this SONY unit... but these many years kind of defeated the point. I don't like SONY because it made the ES series... I like SONY because it made the ES series AND it was also able to pull the cheapest best sounding cassette deck at a price point no other company could match. And all this consumer stuff was designed to last 5 years... it's a testament to their build quality if they lasted so far. If you repair and service a Technics RS-TR series you can as well BUY and service this deck. The disadvantage being it's a one off, you won't find many plastic gears around in case something has cracked.

I had the TCWE-305 from Sony. It was all mechanical no logic controls at all. It used the cheap Tanashin mechanism. However, each deck had its own motor. It felt clunky but it sounded half decent. It had Dolby NR B type and could record on metal and chrome tape. Better than the garbage that you get at Walmart today.

People want to spend the same money for a broken piece of kit, than one that is gone through, then they are mad they have to spend even more money to make it work proper. When someone tells you the unit has been "gone through", ask them, what has been done.

@@KR1275 I'm not saying all the es products were garbage, they weren't. The es line used to be there elevated standard line of equipment. I say used to, they were a big expensive and very heavy. I have a couple of ES DAT recorders and an es CD player. The CD player weighs around 30 lb the DAT machines almost 20 each. They have copper chassis in them. Not just copper plated steel but actual copper chassis. Big power supplies, multiple power supplies. Built like a tank. Then the es line went downhill and they started slapping the es badge on regular crap. Late 70s early '80s yes meant something by the late 80s and into the 90s it was just another label. I have her es receiver that used to be a five channel now it's just the two channel because one of the drive ICS failed and the part was made out of unobtainium, so I rewired it he is one of the rear channel driver ICS to drive one of the front channels. I should show that unit off someday it still works as far as I know for stereo, I don't have it hooked up at the moment it's sitting in my living room blow my old TV not plugged in just sitting there. It's badge DS but it certainly isn't ES it's the same how's the regular junk that Sony was turning out back in the 90s. Now that sounds like I'm bashing Sony I'm not really Sony had some excellent products. They're broadcast gear was second to none, the cameras fantastic same with their VCRs, they were getting more resolution out of their VHS and super VHS machines then other companies. like everyone else though they started cutting corners and moving their manufacturing to China and Vietnam and Indonesia any place but Japan. If you got something you made in Japan or in Wales you got a really good product. What are they making whales you ask? That's where they're high-end cameras were being made. I'm not talking consumer cameras I'm talking their Cinema cameras and broadcast gear. Same factory that the original raspberry pi came out of and we all know how great the first and second generation raspberry pi is where. I've got two of them that run 24 hours a day they've never skipped a beat.

Thinks were broken long before trudeau. The tax hike started under Brian Mouroney with the introduction of the GST. Services that where never taxed before now had a 7% tax added. Everything, from restaurant to paying the barber that cuts your hair. Last time I checked he was a conservative. In 2010 they harmonized the provincial sales tax with the GST, which raised prices even more adding provincial tax to items previously exempt. That again under a conservative government federally and under BC liberals here. There was such an uproar out west that a referendum was launched, the sitting premier at the time Gordon Campbell was tossed and replaced by Christy Clark, and the HST removed and put back the old system. Prior to the tax changed by previous governments spending 40.00 to take your family out for pizza cost 40.00. After GST came in that rose to 42.80 and after they rolled in HST 45.20 for same thing. Harper gave us a break, reducing the GST from 7 to 5%, slap in the face basically. My personal income taxes have been lower under Trudeau and Horgan than previous governments. Keeping more of my hard earned dollars puts a smile on my face even if I do have to spend more due to inflation.

@@tacofortgens3471 inflation is the result of a lot of things. Currently corporations are just charging more for their products and services. That's probably the biggest influence to inflation currently.

I would save the transformer and throw the rest in recycling. Such a poor mechanical design. I cant see sony making that junk, outsourced.

look up a company called netparcel heavy discounts on shipping labels via ups. and for the most part the us don't have to worry about crazy import fees since they get $800 import amount before they get tax vs our crappy $20. i use them alot i stopped using canada post when i found out about them canada post is a huge rip off.

I'm going to start using ups to return stuff. I still won't use them to receive as they charge 25.00 broker fees.
