Great video and I'm very relieved for you that your Sony TC-WR661 dual cassette deck flea market find was in excellent working order while only requiring a gentle external cleaning. For $20, that was an amazing score. :)

Having grown up with vinyl records and cassette tapes in the 70's, 80's, and 90's, but never owning standalone cassette decks, by the late 90's/early 2000's, I bought many gently used cassette decks from eBay sellers at a time when they and their shipping costs were much more affordable and not many people had clued into buying used stereo gear instead of paying full retail prices. Cassette brands I own include: - Aiwa - Akai - Bang & Olufsen - Denon - Hitachi - Nikko - Pioneer - Sansui - Sony - Tascam - Toshiba :)

Nice collection. I love how you alphabetised the brands. Agreed WRT eBay sellers now, some prices for "parts & not working" as well as S&H are ridiculous

I was able to find a Sony TC-K615S, a 3 head deck with Dolby S and quartz speed control. It was not expensive because in need of new belt. I replaced it (it was actually melted) and sure enough it sounds amazing. 🙂

I really like the Sony TC line from the 90's I recently aquired one off eBay and love it. Dolby S sounds divine, you really should try it, even on a Maxell UR with a 90 on the left sounds so close to CD its scary. These units do catch a lot of flack for the plastic transport and overall plastic construction. But they really did provide A LOT of features for the price. My TC-WR635S is amazing! I love it!

@@VintageElectronicsChannel wasn't desparaging the Sony deck as that was nice too but your marantz looked the business reminded me a wee bit of sansui just in over look and placement of the logos etc

You're right, now that you mention it, it does have a Sansui look to it. I had a Sansui deck years ago and it did have that same overall feel.

I've been looking for a Dolby S deck ever since Techmoan convinced me I need one. I've still never found one. I don't like to pay the ebay premium, and I do like the thrill of finding such things in the wild, so it'll probably be a while before I acquire one.

That's been my problem too. I'm not paying eBay prices. The thrill of the hunt makes it more exciting anyway.

If I cant get the bugs worked out on my early ‘80s AKAI deck, I may look for a Sony cassette deck from the late ‘80s/early ‘90s. In any event, I do want to add a CD deck to my system, and I will definitely look for a mid/late ‘90s model, maybe even a CD/MD deck? Like most people, I missed out on MiniDisc-even though I _really_ wanted a portable MD player-and, while it’s pretty much irrelevant now, I think it’d be kinda fun to play around with it. Maybe I’ll also pick up a portable Sony MD player, make some mixes, and give them to my daughter.

I never got into MD either, but it's something I want to try out as well. I think the MD decks look nice. I just picked up an older Sony CD/DVD/VCD player as part of a lot. I still haven't tested it out to see if it works or not. It's an early DVD model. It has a great look.

No headphone output ..red flag ...but more importantly ..no mic inputs ..absolute deal killer . Think about it ..a tape recorder that cannot record your own voice ...it totally defeats the purpose of a tape machine ...oh dear .

Hardly any Hifi decks from the mid 80s had mic inputs. People tended to use micro/mini cassette for voice recording..

@@dean6816 Yes, I know that . That's why I always went for slightly older decks . The point is that the tape recorder, by definition, was for recording the human voice from the outset ..As time has passed, that primary function has now been omitted entirely ..It's a shame really . I have stereo recordings of my long dead relations which are priceless now . I think the manufacturers missed the boat when omitting these features to save money

You need to clean and demagnetise the heads . The Maxell tape should sound better.
