Great review. I've used both. I'd say if you want a pocketable snapshot camera with good video go for the Sony. If you want a pocketable camera with superior dynamic range and micro contrast and also far better Jpegs to share straight from camera go for the Ricoh but as others have said the two cameras address different markets. I'd say a better alternative to the Ricoh would be a Fuji X100V or VI if you can find one. Sony RX100 dominates its niche but the Panasonic TZ100 or TZ200 are worth looking at for those on a budget looking for a similar camera.

The clip time limit stated for Sony is for when the camera setting to allow high temperature is not set. Change that setting in the menu and you get as long as your battery and/or SD card can handle. Or until you just push it way too far.

Sony struggles in low light and dynamic range, but it's a great allrounder/ family camera. Option to film in HD and make stills simultaneously is neat. As a Pentax shooter I love Ricoh, but for a next compact I'll still look for a RX100VII

Great video. Do you think the cloud differentials between the two were due to any dynamic range factors? Just subscribed.

The killer feature, beyond pure image quality, of the Ricoh GR iii, is the snap focus mode… preset focal lengths foregoing achieving autofocus as needed… amazing tool!

Thank you for the content, i have seen of my phone so i am not really shurw about what i see but the ricog looks to have more gamma on yhe highlight and as well in the shadows to me, Why am I seeing this video? I have decided to test my self challenging me with shopting at least 1 photo a day for the last 30 days and so far this thing is keeping on running, is almost 2 months that I am doing it. I normally carry almost everywhere my sony a6600 but that is the problem, almost. I cannot carry it to work or from work to home. Or whetever. There fore i have gone back to a 8 year old canon g7x II, it is in my personal point of view brilliant, it alows me to carry her in my pockets of my jeans. I do not need a bag, among the 2 camera that you ate showing now here in this video (p.s. I have seen a lot of tour other videos as well) are both the ricoh gr iii or eventually the gr iii with 40mm and the sony 24-200 mm able to fitvthe pockets of my jeans like my g7x mark ii or they need the pockets of a jacket? How stiff is the protecting sistem thst open and xloses over the lens on both of them? On my g7x mark ii an the previous s110 i think, both or them after few months had issues with that protection and did'nt close or open completely so before shooting if i fon't wantvto see an annoying part unvlosed on one corner I have to force the opening before shooting on my canon g7x mark ii. I love the tilt screen as well on my canon and the nd built in filter. Iblove as well that before switching on the screen on my canon i can choose from a ring the mode in whichvi will choose and also +-3 compensate before viewing the digital screen. Whichvof theese 2 or other caeras will you suggest to me for this specific kind of needs. To give you an idea on my website i have the photos that I shoot with my a6600 an the ones of thec30 days photo challanfe with my canon 1 inch, sp you can better help me l, please to choose. At some point my canon will die, maybe in other 8 years. One only veeeeery annoing and frustrating part of my canon is the old focus normt so much trustable in some scenarios as low light, speed tracking subjects, very near subjects. And with string direct glare illumination. I am open also about orher cameras, thank you agsin, p.s. I lived in uk one yesr and I liked it but like in milano or in switzerland many days can be rainy or foggy. Are one of these 2 or others inluding the last leica 4/3 water ceiled? Thanks mate.📷📷, max, I've almost forgot to tell ypu my website 😅 maxgioviale.com

If I want to document everyday, travel, KZread contents with behind and distance talk, want to move into game and music making too, I will get the Panasonic HC-X1500 camcorder 25-600mm F1.8-4 for video and Sony A7RV with 16-35mm F4 PZ mainly for photo, and audio gears I will get Sennheiser MKE 440, MKE 600, Line Audio CW4 and Deity HD-TX, are these good setup? I think better go either with actual pocketable RX100 VII camera or proper size A7RV camera since it provide better qualities and usabilities like unique 4 ways screen and also cameras in between of these sizes still need to carry in bag but I not sure should I reduce the projects I want to photograph like macro since we can just google them and let specialised people achieve them and I can just get and always carry a pocket camera. I hope there is a left handed camera so I can film on one hand and photograph on another when I want to, but I come up with the idea to film with DJI P3 when using A7RV and photograph with iPhone 15 standard when film with HC-X1500, good or there is alternative? I will use the MKE 440 stereo mic most of the time, MKE 600 shotgun mic to record elements for dev and CW4 pencil condenser for vocal and instruments and HD-TX as recorder but I not sure how do I record my commentary behind the camera while using the port for front facing mic already, if I can just get one between MKE 600 and CW4 and if the recorder is right for me?

It's not unfair using the zoom on the Sony comparing to the Ricoh as you have "used" the APS-C sensor against the 1" one. :) The advantages has to be compared. A decent zoom is what's missing from every mobile phone and that gives Sony a huge selling point as this camera class competes mostly with phones nowadays. It was a wise move to sacrifice some speed for a bigger tele lens.

Which would I choose to use almost always on auto, please? I know there are cheaper cameras for such as me but the reviews I've seen indicate that one of these would do best for happy snaps on holiday, with my dogs, or scenery, or capturing informal socialising. Or will the GRIIIX be better?

On those images the sky looks very blown out on the sony. Is that recoverable? or is it lack of dynamic range from the smaller sensor?

He should have been exposed for the sky (and raised the shadows in post), or at least gone down on the exposure compensation. With such a little sensor one must be more careful to not clip the highlights, but I find the RAW-files quite manageable.

This comparison shows 2 things 1 that Sony is very close to the performance of Ricoh. plus we have a longer lens, so we can take other types of perspectives and 2 the most important thing is not so much the camera, but what we photograph the subject, remember that photographers of the past had much poorer cameras and yet they made the history of photography , so one camera is as good as another.

The Ricoh is far easier to use in practice. It can easily be used one handed for street photography the Sony (mines a RX100V) is a real faff to change iso, focus mode, exposure compensation. The Ricoh also can give a fairly shallow depth of field, provides great images at higher than 400 iso and has good image stabilisation which puts it well beyond phones or the Sony. They are really different cameras.

Not so cumbersome on the RX100. I mostly keep the ISO in auto, setting the aperture where I want it, and easily adjusting the shutter properly by keeping an eye on the ISO-level, using the wheel. Have to get used to it, like all gear 😊

Thanks for sharing this nice video. Subscribed. I got the Sony RX100Vii - a good versatile little camera. Regarding handgrip - or rather lack thereof - I highly recommend the Smallrig 2467. It's a wooden grip with bottom plate. This makes the camera much better to hold, and also protecting it underneath. Unfortunately it doesn't fit arca swiss tripod mount. It was only one left in my country (Norway) when I bought it in 2022, so I got lucky there.

This test not a fair test, the Sony RX100-7 has a 24-200mm eqiv lens, zoom lenses are not as sharp as a fixed lens. The Ricoh GRIII has a fixed 28mm. Many times you can't get closer to your subject, nor can you back up for enough, so the RX100-7 is the ideal. But it is expensive, $1,300. Add the tax you are talking $1,400+. This camera has treated me well and is worth the money. I have had other compact cameras Panasonic NZ50, and a Canon S100, that both failed after some hard useage. The Panasonic failed with one-month left on the "free" extended warranty, and the warranty contractor refused to fix the camera because they felt I abused the camera, so no more Panasonic cameras for me.

Is he blind?? The Ricoh is *way* sharper and crisper than the Sony. But a GREAT photo is about an interesting subject, composition and storytelling so ultimately the Sony is more versatile and in the right hands will get more great photos (albeit not as sharp/crisp ones). The Ricoh is the ultimate specialist street photography camera - it’s a bit limited for travel and hiking.

@@chrisulliott I have the first version of the Ricoh and mine has the pop up flash. I won't consider the newer Ricohs with a separate flash. The Ricoh is crazy sharp but has its limitations of the 23mm lens (35 and 50 with software). The Sony wins for all around but the Ricoh for good image quality.
