Ill help all of you out with a bad burner laser. The model laser you're looking for is an SF-DB11. This laser can be found in some older sony dvd burners. A Sony DRU-710A or a Sony DW-Q28A. It is probably in other burners around this time frame, but I do know that these 2 had the laser in it. A year or so ago, i put a new burner laser in my 7500 from one of these models(cant remember which) and it is working fine. Word of warning, installation is not for the faint of heart.

The PSX is a DVR of my dreams, I could get it here in my area since there are 2 for sale for a good price but all of their drives are busted, I hope someday people can get the HDD lock bypass and allow people to install their own HDD's, maybe even SSD's

I flash mechapwn in this series of videos as well. Spoiler, it doesn't work for Ps1 games that's why I went with the modchip.

Thanks for this video, great stuff! It seems that Mechapwn doesn't do much for PAL discs. I tried this on 2 different consoles a 7100 and a 7000, but so far I got zilch for PAL PS1 or PS2 discs. Both play NTSC-J discs just fine with FMCB.

Hardware retrocompatible japanese PS2 hate anything made for PAL region It'd already mentioned on the repository. That's why latest version of mechapwn doesn't allow CEX region change for PSX and 50k PS2 model anymore

When I go into the "xosd" folder for the English translation, there is "packages", but in the xosd folder on the HDD, there is also a "certs" folder. When I go to paste the xosd folder, it comes up with a "naming conflict" and asks me if I wish to overwrite it. Since you did record this step, I don't know if this is the menu I'm meant to see and since you didn't go in afterwards to show the folder setup, I don't know if the "certs" folder is still going to be there. I don't know if it "overwrites" it or if it "merges" it.

I don't get it.. My psx has a faulty dvd drive so how do I make it boot from the psxfmcb card I made? edit: I configured holding buttons and it now works.

So I did all of this but I am unable to see my USB drive now with my PSX FMBC Card. So I am unable to move my files over to my PSX HDD to convert. I wonder if it has anything to do with making my OPL the L1 boot instead of HDD I dont know

Is there a way to clone the hard drive to an SDD 2.5”? I have the hardware, but when I used Macrium reflect to scan the drive, I could not click it to select it.

Next time you should do a Matrix Infinity or Modbo install.

I just bought a 5100 model, it reads CD based games without mods (PS1 and PS2) but DVD games wouldn't show. Now I'm back in the UK I just need to wait for a proper step-down transformer then I'll test it fully with and without FreeMcBoot. One thing I'm curious about is using it to record video and how to eventually replace the HDD in the future. Thanks for the help.

It's not possible to replace the drive at the moment. Recording video can be tricky since Japanese broadcast frequencies are different, and the tuner only supports analog video (no DTV).

never mind i got it, Tekken 4 is unsupported but MK Deception plays.. going to try more titles.

Does this mess with the HD at all? I bought a PSX recently and surprisingly it works perfectly out of the box. I would hate to mess up a working hard drive or laser especially with the whole hd encryption situation

Can you use the region lock flash drive by itself, just for region lock purposes. Or do do you have to have the ps2 memory stick with free mcboot installed in order to region lock as well. I downloaded the mechapwn on to the flash drive and plugged it in to my psx but wasn’t really sure to go from there. lol

Isn't the HDD still a high-risk part? Is there a way to replace it?

Use PS2BBL as a bootloader that worked for me

I finally got FreeMcBoot to work but my psx still won’t read and discs. Perhaps both lasers are busted on mine

Didn't know we got mods for the psx, makes me exited to get one

@@sylverrez really cool, I just hope we get some cool mods that take advantage of the xmb. For example instead of having a launcher for games actually being able to have the games installed and displayed on the xmb like with a psp or ps3.

@@denzelkrocker1673 And maybe a HDD replacement one day. You can replace it with a new HDD, but you need to repartition it to have the appropriate files before it can work. So the only option for the time being is taking another HDD out of a donor PSX.

Modchips are far more superior than TSOP tbh.

you can't do ps1 region free on DESR units, you can however patch the region to Japanese and burn a disc

Can mods like the mx4sio work with this?

Is it possible to swap out harddrives yet? I happen to have one that hasn't died yet but definitely want to switch this out before it does.

Hey dude. Thank you for the video. I have a question, as I think I have broken my console :( LOL - I have a PSX 5700 - I got to the part of transferring the language packs over, and I think I accidently deleted some files from the HDD, which in turn will no longer boot to XMB, simply black screen. Now the HDD was working prior and XMB would work. It's a rookie mistake I made, and I'm hoping somehow I can undo such mistake. Is there anything I can do? Or would it be possible if someone could send me their original HDD files from a 5700. Thanks again, great video, it was my fault when accidently deleting stuff , without overwriting first. :(

So i have not had any issues soft modding ps2s in the past, but I'm trying to use Mechapwn on a PSX 5100, but its been sitting on the "backing up NVRAM" screen for about an hour and a half now. Any thoughts?

When u did ur soft mod what Memory card u used?? and i was able to install Mechapwn I now can play usa ps2 and backup ps1 Japan games.. haven't tried usa yet

AHHH I GOT ONE! also important to note - the machine that installs FreeMcBoot will install it for that machine (even in PSX mode). I had issues running FMCB on my PSX when installed from my phat PS2. Once I did manage to get my PSX into wlaunchelf, I formatted and reinstalled FMCB on the PSX itself. Now it works great! Pro tip for anyone who gets on these honking chonkers!

Really bizarre comment. Softmods aren't permanent and are completely reversible. PSX units with dead burner lasers are literally unusable paperweight as Modzville said. Also, PSX units are basically ewaste in Japan and they can be had for very little money. Only weird foreigners are interested in them for some reason. There are much better and easier ways to play PlayStation games than these things.
