Great review! Am thinking about purchasing one of these, but as a note-taker? Dunno... But when you showed how versatile it is as far as using it with a DSLR or so-so video camera, I'll probably go ahead and get one. They don't give them away though...

Worth the money.

I think it sounds great Dave and distortion was minimal at the higher levels.

It sounds really good. I think that a few seconds on your audio tests you should compare both mics by talking on the same distance to hear the real quality. I think a lot of people know that the distance affects to the quality. Anyway, very good review!!

The PCM-M10 sounds better than the lapel mic + camcorder, however the lapel mic seems suited to this particular test. I think a good external mic with the PCM-M10, as opposed to built-in omnidirectional mikes might produce an even better quality of sound for this type of studio test. Just a thought.

To determine what rec level to choose, what should I be looking at on the audio level meters? Also, do you have mic sensitivity set to high or low?

+Abdul Ghani Memon I normally aim for -6dB … levels depend on your room environment etc.

Try low sensitivity first. If you can't get enough signal level, change it to high.

i am assuming that you had the levels set high because you placed the mic sensitivity slider on low instead of high. Nevertheless, mine has been going strong for years and use it with an out board device to power a Sennheiser MKH815T shotgun mic for bird recordings and it makes clean recordings. Batteries last and last. Incidentally, Roots leather makes a case that fits it perfectly, even has openings for the microphones. Not sure but it might be made for a digicam or blackberry but it is perfect.

It sounds quite good. But not as good as the lapel mic. The price can definitely be a bit lower. like $120 or so.

Shut that wretched apple up... jk ;) Great testing! I'm considering this piece, unfortunately MF sent be a 20% coupon but can't combine that with a price match... I think I'll just go for it on amazon. How well does the unit do with sound sources not in its direct path, with a fairly dead sounding room? I'm hoping to record "seminar" courses, however they're usually taking place in rooms that are not at all lively sounding. Would its mics perform well if for example, placed behind the subject?

Why not so many views ?

The lav mic is much richer. The Sony is a bit hollow sounding, which can be fixed in post with some EQ. He's in a quiet room with no extraneous noise so it sound ok, but get in a real work situation, like an interview on a trade show floor, and the Sony is gonna sound like crap. The pattern is too wide to focus in and isolate the talent. Always use real microphones, kids!

I think the Sony is great to Record band rehearshals.

Your audio with the lapel has distortion.
