The Nex 6 is very compelling but I could never do without full manual controls of the Nex 7. The tri nav itself makes the camera super usable. It allows me to make immediate adjustments on the fly in a way that isn't as easily done on the 6 or 5.

About 2 months ago I was set on the 7 but when I went out and chatted with the guys at the store I ended up getting the 6. Like you mentioned the 6 is that much newer with some design improvements like stacking the wheels on the top and moving the movie capture button of the side where it will be less likely to be unintentionally activated. The 24MP on the 7 is nice but the 16MP on the 6 is more than enough for my applications. I've had the 6 for 2 months now and I'm glad I got it over the 7.

Does the NEX 7 have a screen that comes all the way up, so you can see what you're recording when you're in front of the cam?

How do those two compare against the sony a6000?

im with canon since 2009, so i got plenty of lenses from canon. now i want to go sony, because canon lacks behind with the video functions. would it be better to get sony lenses or an active ef adaptor for ef to e mount? i think i go with the nex6, since i need that wifi functionality.. and its half the price "used" than the nex 7 i dont mind the audio input jack, im using an external audio recorder anyways.

Do they both share the same hotshoe - I want to put a Yongnuo flash controller on top.

Does the Nex 6 uses the same Lenses asnthe Nex 7?

I had a NEX-6 and I loved its quick, easy handling. What wasn't so great was its laggy EVF in low-light conditions, and slow recovery time between shots. The video produced by the NEX-6 was a bit of a mixed bag, with a grainy, slightly noisy image that I wouldn't have expected from a camera with such a large sensor. I hear that some of these issues have been fixed in the a6000.

Good review. I own the NEX 6 and it's the bet camera I've ever had, bar none (and over 60 years of taking pictures I've owned just about ever brand there is). Small, features-rich, excellent BIG sensor, very attractive finish and design, and the 16mm-50mm kit lens provides a nice, basic range. Terrific IQ. Love it!

For anyone interested in shooting more than 10-15 minutes of video w/o overheating, there is no choice. It's NEX-6 only. The 6 seems to be the first NEX that's worked out the overheating issue (finally). This is major for video-heads.

My shooting buddies all have the 7 which is why I'm looking to buy one. A new camera always has a learning curve and I know that it would be advantageous to own the same camera as them. Is the 6 similar enuf ?

I have 7 myself, and I love the button layout, having the 2 top buttons controlling fstop/shutter just makes a nice flow. The menu actually not that bad either click of the wheel advances you page by page. One of the biggest thing I dont like is (looked like the 6 had it too) is the shooe. Just because its non standard.

Love my Nex7 and my C3. Both compact, great battery life, killer shots. It does need light to perform.

Another user has a review on youtube saying that the NEX 7 is good as a camera, but that it overheats badly when used for 1080 resolution video and shuts off after a few minutes. he complained to Sony about this, and they told him that video was just an extra "add on". So, if you wanted to shoot any kind of serious video, I'd go for the 6.

Really want the 6, hoping to physically play with one before I buy tho. Are video capabilities identical? I can add a mic on to the 6 hot shoe?

So im looking into a NEX camera mostly for video recording at concerts, my main concern is sound quality which an external mic will take care of but the NEX6 doesnt have the port for it?

Sir Matt, i hear that nex-6 is not consistent with its color in video and photos. sometimes it get soft and it get vivid colors? How true is this. Heard it from one of the review in the youtube unfortunately i forgot the link.

The 6 has the new hybrid contrast/phase detection auto focusing, the 7 doesn't. But should be getting it in the replacement (7N?)

Mr. Nikonguy, I think the statement about the NEX6 having the D7000 sensor should be rephrased. Given that Sony makes the sensors for Nikon. So it really means the Nikon D7000 has the Sony NEX 6 sensor! :) Thanks for the great review!

Worth mentioning that whilst the 6 lacks a 3.5mm mic input, it can use the new hotshoe xlr adapter (which costs $800...)

great review as always - find my self using Zoom external mic more so mic input maybe not that important - love my NEX7 - but hate the menu system - was wondering if they had improved it at all - Love the menu system in my Sony RX100 wish the NEX7 and my NEX5n had the same - if some attractive apps come soon might have to get the NEX6 - and maybe sell my 5n -

I shall compromise nothing! But agreed, you are right of course. In the end I went for a Sony HX20V point and shoot and I'm really impressed with the results from it so far.

You made one mistake about the NEX 6. Sony has made an articulating stereo mic for the multi-mico pins tucked away in the seemingly generic shoe atop the 6. It also can work with other accessories such as XLR mic inputs as well as an adapter shoe which enables the use of older accessories.

I heard 7's replacement is due in CES 2013 and newer A77 will come too.

Looks like a really tempting system but pricey compared to a full DSLR when you don't have the advantage of it being pocket-sized, which is something I would want in a camera of this sort of style. Are there any more compact cameras which have this sort of feature range but in a more convenient and discreet pocket size? (I appreciate I want the best of both worlds)

I just bought the nex6 ,it is great ,so compact, great evf, good features. i also have a canon 50d which is the same megapixels. all buttons and dials work very well.You don't have to go into the menu for everything , you just use the function button ☺

Matt, DSLR vs NEX. I know there are millions of lenses, accessories ecc. for dslr that NEX system clearly doesn't have, at least today. But what I fear most is that if I buy a dslr than I'll bring that out with me probably only few times, surely not everyday. On the other hand NEX-6 is more portable and has somewhat "pancake zoom". So my question is: better having a full packed dlsr with great lenses but using all only few times or having always NEX-6+16-50 powerzoom with you?

I got the NEX 7 amd I love it. The only feature that I like in the 6 that I don't have is the WIFI, but that is most certainly not a necessity.

Bought the Nex 5N last year and looking with great interest at the Nex 6. I never even considered the Nex 7 as it was just too expensive and didn't like the twin dials on the top. As you said the menus are terrible, even on my 5N it's difficult to navigate. I kept wanting to put my eye up to the camera with the 5N and getting the 6 with EVF will allow me as using the screen I find isn't the easiest. I've been watching the price of the 6 and it's starting to fall, maybe after Christmas :)

MrDissiuk, you misunderstood Sony's numbering system. NEX number represents camera "class". Letters after numbers represent camera generations, that is which camera is newer. NEX-5s are lower class than NEX-6, and NEX-6 is lower class (at least in theory) than NEX-7. The oldest NEX-5 is just NEX-5. Then came NEX-5N, and the current model is NEX-5R. Yes, there are other series of NEX-ex that just cause confusion, but this is the essence in Sony's naming pattern for NEX.

I had the debate of the 6 or 7 and I ended up with the 6. The built in wifi and remote control app sold it for me.

I got the 7, price and the immature lens system might be the biggest factors holding back the NEX line. Adaptors are nice but if we're going to drop the amount of money on these things SONY is asking, chances are we want AF to go with it. But I must say I'm still quite happy with my camera, fast enough, feature packed and yea, the IQ is fantastic!! I'm eagerly awaiting for the G lens coming out later this year and watching closely for what else is coming down the pipe line as far as lens goes.

if I want to get a second camera, I will definitely go for sony RX100. if I have to make a choice in NEX, 6!

It might be unpopular because of the small choice in lenses... Here in Holland I'm seeing only 13 lenses with an E-mount, 7 of which are original Sony.

If i were you i should get a decent DSLR + a good compact camera like the fujifilm X10, that way you have a quality performer for when you want to do some serious stuff, and also a good compact one to have with you all the time;)

The numbering system of camera manufacturers really does baffle me. All logic says the 7 should be the newer one, but the 6 is! It's like Canon - in a few years when the get to the 950D, where do they go next? They've done the 1000D and that was their most basic DSLR ever! Maybe it's a Japanese thing, they love their numbers! lol

the 6 has (i believe) wifi capability...which makes it popular with those wanting to post photos immediately...

NEX-6 surely is not pocketable like an iPhone or like an RX-100, agree. But in this season it fits easily into a pocket of a jacket I think. So it's not very pocketable but sure it's pocketable in some case, don't you think? btw life is all about compromises :D

great cameras! But i still prefer the NEX 7. THe NEX 6 can take an app for time-lapse ..BUT... its worthsless! it can only take 990 pics. any time-lapse takes at least twice as that. Good thing I found this cool time-lapse remote: tempus.bymac.org

Official news is No more NEX7's - Sony says not enough features to come out with NEX7n - most likely they will come out with a NEX8 or NEX9 which might be a full frame - there might me a Firmware update but I do not expect much - They want users to go with NEX6 now until new NEX out which I expect about Jun 2014 - they want to lead so a good way to do that is Full Frame in a NEX size body - they know how to do it - just look at the RX1

I think that the NEX7 isn't so popular because of the price, it costst €1199 with the 18-55, thats alot of money, the NEX6 costs €949 with the 16-50, pretty big difference, i think that will be the main point why the NEX6 will be more popular. You?
