It boggles my mind how a company could produce a near perfect helmet camera like the Sony as100v, allow it to shoot excellent XAVC-S, then require you to "upgrade" to an inferior product to get full benefits from XAVC-S. The layout and the fade tool killed it for me, and I'm glad you pointed out those differences. If you're looking at this product, definitely try the demo first to see if you can deal with the new layout. Excellent review of the program!

humpty dumpty :D I saved someone $50, sweet. No problem. I haven't bought it yet myself but I plan to soon. 35 hours remaining! It comes with the ACID Music studio and Sound Forge Audio studio in a bundle too. Steam says the price of these products individually, not on sale, is $160 so it's a good deal by all accounts.

Meow786 Steam itself is the DRM in that you must forever continue to use Steam to use purchased items and they reserve the right to take it off you without explanation etc. They're selling movies on there too now!

Hello Derek, Thank you for posting these tutorials. I am a beginner and this is my first video editing software purchase. You have made life so much easier but the best advice was to save the work constantly bc the program is prone to crash. Mine does so all the time. Well actually it will put up a message box saying the audio files have a problem and I need to select another one. It will do so through all of those files. But if I quit the program through the task manager and restart, all is well. So luckily I followed your advice and I save after I import every file and as I go along adding to the timeline. This brings me to my question which I can't find the answer for anywhere. I have prepared v=everything in sections. I wrote my narration and recorded each separately. With each section of audio narration I also have a music file, lots of short video files, and the original audio for those video files which I move to a bottom row where the sound is muted. There are also a few text files in a few places on the timeline. My issue is that I have completed the first 6 or so segments but now I think I may want to rearrange them or even move the whole section over a fraction of a second. I know if I hold down either the Shift or Control key I can highlight the files in the timeline that I click on. I tried to move them but when i did instead of moving the files over a copy of all the files was made. So how do I do this and do I need to highlight all the files on the different rows of the timeline to get them all to move together or can I just highlight the video files and everything in the space (in the rows above and below) will also move too? Sorry I'm really terrible with being concise. Please let me know when you have the time. I hope you do not mind and thank you in advance. Enjoy the holiday season if you are into that. Peace.

Great mini-seminar - as always. When I got an email telling me you'd uploaded a video, I scooted to KZread. 21 minutes later, I had answers to questions I didn't know I had! I mean, I didn't even know Studio Platinum 13 had been released. You answered my REALLY big question: will Studio Platinum 13 edit 4K footage? It can? Swell, because I am going to be going 4K by the end of this year. It'a actually EXTREMELY smart how Sony thought, "Hey! What's the point of selling the future of digital movie making without a way to edit it?" Upgrade time and thank YOU! Have a good and happy year.

Been using MS12 for past two years--64bit 8gig quadcore. Over 100 20 min+ videos, Two video tracks, pip, effects, transition etc,1080p..mono track....Downloaded ms13 and edited&rendered first video today. Yes layout diff but this version is faster in edits and preview...no jitters lag. Render seems slightly faster. Your review convinced me to upgrade. Thanks. Thank goodness sony fixed the h265 dll issue...imports seemless

Except the new layout, I see some nice improvements, specially the fade tool, proxy video and to be able to move windows without snapping everywhere.

Version 13 adds three brand new things: edit by proxy files, 4k support, and the ability to see thumbnails, rather than just file numbers, when browsing media. SMS veterans may not care for the simplified interface, but the abundance of arcane icons on the prior versions was a deterrent to new users. 4k editing would be almost impossible on an ordinary computer without proxy files. Wide use of 4k may be several years off, but the added resolution could benefit 1080p video in several ways: tracking with less jerky panning, pan-crop without quality loss, and less moiré. However, the file-type compatibilities and work-flows remain to be confirmed.

Funny thing is I could render 4k video 15 years ago with free software (virtualdub etc) and it always annoys me when commercial software limits things like resolution and frame rate. 4k video could have been supported day 1 of vegas 1, if not in a template, at least with ADVANCED>Custom> option. Not that anyone needed a 4k video 15 years ago, but I don't want companies trying to decide what I need and then leaving off other options. I have 13 now and I am very happy to have learned about the new proxy editing feature, that is great.

I've been using vegas 9 for 4 years now...I think it's time for an upgrade. 9 was outdated when I bought it.

Thanks for the vid. I'm using Vegas Pro 8 right now but i want to upgrade to a newer version. But i'm not using most of the features that it provides so it's nice to be able to try out the trials versions of the latest software :)

Just because theyve included software that makes play back so much smoother lol... makes me fall inlove with this software instantly lol... and im not too picky about software or interface.... i just want it to get the job done and it seems like sony has nailed it in that respect! lol... Thankyou soo much for this video... Im going to try for the suit i also make music occasionally and id love to try out that music software along with others!

Thanks for your tutorials, I have now figured out how to do the basics in Movie Studio where once I was lost! I don't suppose you have any on using Sound Forge Audio Studio to edit the sound on my videos?

My first movie camera was 8mm FILM, then I stepped up to 8mm Sound, BetaMax, Hi8, Mini DV tapes, so I've been supporting the industry for a while, Grandad had 16mm. Anyway thank you for these tutorials, I've been on the fence between this and Cyberlink Director 13. I have converted all my films and tapes to DVD, which one should I choose. I like the basic fade, titles, sound adjusting. Not looking for Gone with the Wind. Thanks

The toytown touch buttons on v13 look silly - and the ever- present blue box around the mouse curser rather irritating. I hope version 14 will have an option for the v12 button layout. This layout wastes valuable screen space - and would anybody really choose to edit via a touchscreen?

So they changed the look & layout just for the people that might be using touch screen devices?! Surely the vast majority of Movie Studio users will still be using a mouse, and even those with touch screen PCs would still choose to use a mouse for accuracy?

One thing that erks me in the older version that i have is no "Smart Render" i.e. When I import a series of .mts files to the timeline, add a title and transitions and render back to my hard disk it goes and re-renders the entire file. Other programs I've tried just copy those non changed sections and only render portions that have changed like transitions and titles. Does this new version have this "Smart Render" feature??

The steam version is not the same complete version. One example: With normal version you can open the program multiple times "at the same time" and copy media from one project into a different one. Steam version does not allow this. Steam also does not come with DVD Architect (I think?). Please know that new version is being released next month. Hey Movie studio Zen. I don't uderstand why that deal is better?

when you create a proxy video for a video scene, do you have to create it for all the scenes. If this is the case it would take forever. I'm new with this software and I just imported some videos and created the proxy for the first one and it took a long time.

How do you get un-copyrighted content from the internet like sports footage or clips from films and stuff like that?

Very strange that Movie studio 12 is completely absent from that download link, it goes from 13 to 11. Even when I click download update at the top movie studio 12 is not there, but don't worry I went into movie studio 12 about and clicked on update and it sent me right to a page with build 1183. Very strange this omission is present on their download page.

Can you split screen in this software? So I can have two separate camera angles in one frame?

I'm currently abit behind on Sony Movie Studio 9 which only allows for 4 video timelines and 4 audio timelines which to be honest is very awful as I make projects that require many layers. Yes you can import .png files saved on a transparent background (alpha channel).

all of my added; fonts, plugins and other add ons in my other version,... will that be lost in the upgrade?

At 13.15 you say we can click on all layers together to fade them. I am not able to do this. i can only do one at a time. Is this because I'm using the trial version?

hi guys, i have a question: is there any way to fix the auto-sizing of the effects window? each time it pops open, it resizes itself to a certain size according to each plugin ... and it really sucks so much .. it kills me. what a mindless difference to all previous versions!! also the make movie dialog: if i could change that towards skipping the pre-dialog, it would be very nice as well. have any tips?

Movie Studio 13 Also noted then if you choose GPU Acceleration of video processing (in Prefrences Video) the GPU usage of my video card is at 100% even though no rendering is in process!! it does speed up previewing and movement around the editing screen

Great channel and good work! A quick question. On your review, you indicate that Platinum has the proxy editing feature. However, on the Sony website / product comparisons, it seems to indicate that ONLY the PRO versions have proxy editing. Were you using the PRO version in your review, or are the Sony specs incorrect? Derek, Just recently bought Platinum 13. Have Windows 10 and a 4K display. (Asus Zenbook) My problem ? I cannot get the Title/Text dialogue in 13 to open completely, so that I can change text characteristics. That is, many/most of the buttons to add/modify text are simply not visible/accessible. Please know that I have tried every level of scaling in Windows 10, to compensate for any 4K problems. None of this will do the trick So, it does not seem that the issue is the size of things, so much as it is that it is that this Title/Text dialogue area simple will not open out sufficiently to allow access to all of its adjustment features. In fact, even the area to just enter text does not open out enough to even insert text. As a matter of background, I have using Movie Studio for years. My last version was 12. I really do understand the software reasonably well. But this is a really strange anomaly. Any ideas ? Thanks. Dan Little

Hi MSZ, thanks for an informative video review here. After perservering with Video Pad "Professional" (their words) for 4 years, I'm looking for a faster and more stable editor. VP has everything I need regarding features, but it is just so pedantic and slow when pre-processing. And continually needs to be re-installed to run properly (always crashes or hangs up for up to 10 minutes !). Trouble is, I am still persisting with Win XP which I like. I am wondering if this Sony Movie Studio or other similar middle-road editing software is compatible with XP? Or am I best to bite it and upgrade to Win 7 or 8 ? VP also has an annoying problem when rendering into MP4, often the image colours distort/run in segments of the clip and I am wondering if this is a universal problem with low priced software or just happens with VP? Thanks. ADDED: I have just discovered the MSZ forum so I will also post this question on there
