Sony Lens on Nikon Body - Awesome for Milky Way Photography

I've recently been using the Megadap ETZ 21 adapter which enables us to mount Sony E mount lenses to a Nikon Z mount camera.
I have a couple of Sony lenses and in this video I'll show you some images and timelapses I captured with this combination.
In short .. it's a wonderful combination. Let me know your thoughts below.

    This is a great combo. Megadap adapter really takes lens collection to the next level - I had a chance to try it out on a new Sigma 20mm f1.4 DG DN lens. AF / EYE AF works flawlessly. Also one of the lenses where this adapter comes handy is Sony 14mm GM lens, which is of course the best 14mm lens for astro on the market and with all the announcments of a new lenses, which are more or less for E mount, this adapter is a great investment.

    In a similar fashion I used Nikon F and Pentax adapters on my Canon EF cameras - very thin adapters like your Sony E to Nikon Z. What started out as a convenience of being able to buy multiple lens types (manual only), eventually led to me having a decent stable of Nikon lenses, and subsequently converting to Nikon. I found all too frequently that the Nikon version of many third party lenses were substantially less expensive than the Canon versions, which is why I built up a collection of Nikon lenses.

    Thank you for your valuable inputs, which confirm my findings. I use this adapter for some time now, also mainly for Milky Way photography. For me too, it works flawlessly. My concern was that the corners of the images may suffer from degradation e.g. astigmatism, but I have found no such issues. The only flaw I found was that lens distortions are not corrected in JPEG, but that is of no concern for what we are doing here, and is easily corrected for in Photoshop anyway.

    For astrophotography I have the ETZ21 and the Sony 20mm f1.8 as well as the Samyang AF f1.8. Both wonderfully compact and light, which I love! My question is: I have updated the ETZ21 to the latest firmware V1.26 (latest September 10th firmware). On the Sony and the Samyang there is one button each (black round push button) to make individual settings. I would really like to be able to set both lenses to infinity by pressing the button (similar to switching on native Z lenses), but unfortunately I can't manage that. Do you know how this works or what settings in the Nikon menu I have to make? Thank you very much!! Greetings Chris

The second was shot using P mode on the Z6ii so the aperture started about f5.6 and ramped down to f1.8. Neither of them displayed and flicker at all. PS: The timelapse of the flowers shot in P mode is straight out of camera recorded in Timelapse Movie Mode . .. no editing at all.

  • @nightscapeimages.richard

    @nightscapeimages.richard

    My favourite focal length is 20mm. I feel this is a great balance between detail and wide enough to fit a lot in. I do have a 14-24 lens but I use it more for timelapse than anything else. I have shot aurora with all of these lenses. I think if you were in a location with massive aurora such as Iceland or Norway you would benefit from a wider focal length.

    Hi Richard Seems like allot of photographers are getting Jack of the big 2 and are going to sony

  • @nightscapeimages.richard

    Yes I think a lot of photographers have done that in the past. But at the moment all the cameras from all of the brands are excellent. I much prefer my Nikon cameras to Sony's as far as ergonomics and handling are concerned. But for video the Sony A7s3 is certainly the better option. But this video is all about the fact that you can use Sony lenses on the Nikon camera bodies so that gives a lot more lens options.

    Hi Richard. I noticed that you are not light painting your foreground elements and buildings in any of these shots. Are you getting away from that technique?

  • @nightscapeimages.richard

    @nightscapeimages.richard

    Жыл бұрын

    No I'm not getting away from light painting. . I guess I'm trying a simple approach. Many times you can't get close enough access to do light painting. Also, there are many scenes that are too distant or large to light. The buildings in all of these shots were the other side of fences . .so I kept my distance. As well as that I think it's good to practice different techniques.

    I really don’t understand why you have the Sony when you have an unmod Z6II that is at least equal to the Sony for video. Wouldn’t it have made more sense to buy a second Z6/Z6II? And a second 20mm S? Really don’t understand splitting systems, even if to get 1/2 stop…

    You obviously haven't shot the two cameras side by side at iso64,000 ... The Sony absolutely kills the Nikon .. or anything else at high iso's in complete darkness . .Just have a look at some of my in the field videos for some samples.

    @@nightscapeimages.richard I think what’s obvious is how condescending your response is. However, let me respond by saying I have actually compared them, in fact all of the higher end Sony cameras and the better Canons and found the Nikon easily outperforms them inferior in low light, at high ISO and/or AF in low light. In fact, this is exactly what Matt Granger (amongst others) found with the new Sony. So, I guess it’s not so obvious…

    @@grossieone3683 Sorry if I sounded condescending .. not my intention at all. However the A7s3 is in a league of it's own compared to other Sony cameras in this regard. I'm talking about video specifically here.
