Sony HX-99: I SAVED $1000 WITH THIS HACK

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This budget 4k Camera has now new life thanks to this hack. The Sony HX-99 could easily now be the cheapest 4k camera for video content creation. If you are in the market for a cheap solution for your 4k streaming, you are in the right place. It is really hard for a budget camera that ticks all the boxes, as often camera manufacturers will limit their cheaper products. In fact, although the Sony HX-99 has flippy screen, the right zoom range and great autofocus, it has been hugely limited with a severe 5 minutes recording limit, and well known overheating issues when it comes to 4K recording. This cheap trick fixed both the overheating and the 5 minutes recording issue, and it saved me at least £1000 worth of gear. This hack transformed the inexpensive HX99 into a 4K beast for recording and 4K streaming that not many cameras are capable of. Can the Sony HX99 be now the best 4k streaming camera? Is this now the best budget 4K compact camera? Let's take a look at our ultrazoom pocket camera.

    What happens after 45 mins? Do you just restart the camera or can you not use it for a while to let it cool down?

    I do agree about the tilt, although, my take is that Kensington may have had no choice in this case. The Expert ball is huge, and this, unfortunately, means that the mouse needs a significantly thick case. The alternative would be (as you suggested) to have the thicker part on the front and a leaner back, which may be more ergonomic... but the caveat, in this case, would be that unless the user would balance the keyboard height, one shoulder is now sensibly higher than the other, which isn't good. The other way around for Kensington would have been to create a flat case and have the ball sticking out, as they did with the Slimball... but that means that sometimes you are hunting for the buttons... whether the Expert's buttons are almost impossible to miss (or at least 3 out of 4 are). Personally, I feel like the compromises that Kensington has done with the Expert are good enough, but I understand this will differ from hand to hand. Thank you so much for passing by ;)

    is it heat, battery life, or storage size limiting the recording time ?

  • @AleSuggests

    Yes, no and no. As I say in the video, I was able to record 45 mins externally before the camera would overheat. The battery will last for ages once you keep it connected to its main plug via USB. So this won't be an issue. Regarding the last one (storage size), if you record externally this won't be an issue... unless you fill up the external hard drive of the computer you are using. I hope this helps and thanks for passing by ;)

    Just buy a 3” all thread rod. 1/4”-20. And a female / female barrel connector. (For screwing onto your tripod thread mount.) 🤷🏻‍♀️

    Yes, captured a pine Martin, stealing peanuts from a bird feeder, and the IS is excellent, at 720mm with stills, at 4K it’s higher still.

    4k recording, and 4k streaming can be really expensive. Not many cameras offer a great autofocus, a tilt display and a huge zoom lens... so instead of spending thousands for a mirrorless with lenses... I manage to stay very cheap by hacking this fairly inexpensive little compact camera beast! I think it's great... especially for overhead shots! But I'm curious about what other creators' opinion is... so I'd appreciate you'd let me know in the comments ;)

    I'm confused. How do you record over HDMI and what sorcery is 4K recording on standby?

  • @AleSuggests

    @AleSuggests

    9 ай бұрын

    You need a "capture card" which is a small adapter that will convert an HDMI female connector into a USB male. Plug that USB into a computer. Then you will use a software like OBS on a computer to record the signal coming from the HDMI out of the camera. At this point, you will not need to press the "record" button on the camera, just leave it powered on (standby) and it will keep on "streaming" a preview, that signal will be in 4K. I hope this helps ;)

    I'm using a HX-99 for streaming at 1080 60 FPS - the camera will never overheat. I use a capturestick but USB with sony webcam software works too (capturestick/card is much better). Setting the aspect ratio to 16:9. Apt. 3.5 F 60-80. Needs a bit light.

  • @jackiethewriter5804

    @jackiethewriter5804

    @@Combatsportscoverage Yes, easily, you power it over usb (with the adapter you get with the camera) and use hdmi out to capture card. The camera knows when connected to usb and won't drain or charge the batteries as long in operation. I can stream for 100 hours if I want. I haven't tried with 4K 30 fps but I guess it will not overheat since you are not recording, you're streaming. Easy to check though but I'm sure almost. Quality when daylight is freaking amazing. Indoor and dark needs light ofc. If you have the camera near you can even zoom like hell. I have autofocus off and set it once with the ring. Use Fn to set white balance - has great pre sets and manual too. Fool around. I start stream with the camera in movie mode. You can set the camera to pal or ntsc - I have mine set to pal - fps in 4K, HD etcetera looks different but works the same in case you wonder. If you use OBS and change settings for the camera (configure) it will remember that setting. Real cool. I love it. For streaming very good. And you can take it with you too ofc. If you use a mobile phone holder/tablet holder on your tripod you will have no issues with cables (usb/hdmi) or do like in the video above.

    Hey that's great info. Thank you for sharing! Although from my tests I was able to stream only up to 45min in 4K. Then it would overheat. So I guess it becomes unlimited only in full HD. Still... great stuff considering the size of this thing! ☺ Thanks so much for passing by!

I am comparing Sony (with bracket hack that you recommended) and Canon PowerShot SX70 HS which is 60 € more expensive, but I think that it might be my choice, it is still in my budget. I want to have camera with good zoom capability and clean HDMI so how I could use it for live streaming also.
