Sony HT-A9 Home Theater System Review | Is it really all that?

Ғылым және технология

The Sony HT-A9 Home Theater System doesn't look much like anything we've seen before. It uses wireless technology and Sony processing to offer a 12-channel surround experience with just 4 speakers. Does it work? Do you need a subwoofer? How great does it sound? And what's up with that price? We have the answers here.

I’m apparently one of the few who was able to get this system the week it was released. Bottom line - truly fantastic. A completely satisfying experience. Integration with center speaker on my A80J required a few adjustments on the TV but after doing so it was nearly perfect. I eventually got the subwoofer which made it even better! As for drop outs, I had a few, but that was fixed by pointing my router antennas away from the system. I’m so glad I’m not on some waiting list right now. Thanks for this great review.

I'm one of those patiently waiting on many lists. I have the A80J and been binge watching youtube reviews for the HT-A9, a couple of reviewers I trust mentioned that using the TV as the center channel through the cable made it worse, some said the speakers and the TV speaker are not acoustically matched. I supposed this is one of those personal tastes thing, but I'm wondering if you can expound on the adjustments you made.

Same boat as you, got it real quick with SW5 and A80J (500$ off for the trio). I think I prefer using the A80J as center channel. But not done on testing (tv, movies, XBX & PS5). Love the trio, really solid experience. The surround is quite unreal, though to match for a soundbar kit with satellites and sub.

I have the Sony A80j, using center channel and it’s fantastic fidelity. At first I was experiencing dropouts, but switched to RF off…and connected to Ethernet. None since. Using my AppleTV 4K connected the the HDMI out on the HTA9, makes a great combo. The speakers are huge, I ended up mounting the speakers, and feel it looks better. Curious, did you prefer any settings better than others, auto/cinema,etc? Do you think connecting to Ethernet makes a difference? Love your reviews…hope you get over 1MM subscribes soon!!

The most immersive wireless speakers at the moment! Sold my bose 900 setup for this and its worth it! I had more drop outs and problems in bose than this, tip for the dropout issue, connect directly the devices to hdmi in of the a9 receiver, just use an hdmi switch if you have more device, you will most likely experience drop out if you will rely from the tv , and also make sure the 4 speakers have a clear line of sight from the receiver for a solid connection!

Great Review (as always) Caleb. I've been fascinated to say the least with the SONY HT-A9 ever since I've heard/read all the reviews up to yours. I just wish I had the bucks for it. LOL As of now, I'm still being content with my NAKAMICHI ShockWafe Pro. Which I've had for over a year now. But will step up eventually. I will say that I'm at a point in my life in which I've started to "critically" listen to Music again. Especially Jazz. So I can see myself spending double for audio over a display. Though it's been great to watch movies at home due to COVID-19 issues. Especially since we are still on a Vaccine Mandate here in NYC.

I’ve got mine hooked up to the 83A90J as the Center. It really is fantastic. With the screen that size and the Acoustic Surface audio of the A90J, you can often hear the dialogue localised to the character who is talking. Plus compared to Klipsch and some others , it handles DTS. So if you’ve got a disc collection of any size DTS is a must. Price wise I think you’d spend as much or more to buy separates that match the HT-A9. And yes it needs the big sub ! 😆

I seriously regretted buying HT-A9 . Not one , not one reviewer mentioned that , if one of the four speakers don’t work , the whole system don’t work. I bought HT-A9 and SW5 subwoofer. And I have sent in one of the HT-A9 speakers and it spoiled again rendering the whole system USELESS. And when it works , my latest Sony 85 inch TV (I bought Sony TV because I am afraid of incompatibility with the HT-A9) keep switching between tv speakers and HT-A9 speakers . Something is very wrong. Pretty tired and have left the HT-A9 & subwoofer to collect dust until I have time to send one of the speakers to repair again .

Greetings Caleb....Thank You for the great review. We are Sony fans in our household and we recently picked up the 75" X95J per your recommendation. We love this set. We also have the 65"XBRX900F. We live about 40 miles from El Paso, TX and we use an over the air antenna. Both Sonys are unable to pick up the ABC and NBC feeds. We were hoping the NextGenTV antenna upgrade would assist in this effort, but it's not happening. We also have an LGOLED55B7A in my son's room for game play and we have a couple of cheap Vizio TVs we picked up at Sam's scattered around the house. The LG and Vizio TV's all pick up the ABC and NBC feeds from El Paso without a problem. While Sony's commitment to picture quality is admirable, someone at Sony needs to look at what the heck they're doing with the OTA tuners they're putting in their TVs. It is unacceptable for Sony to cheap out on this feature. Thanks for listening.

We're very happy with our HT-A9, (with the large subwoofer)...For movie watching, the surround effect/immersion seems to very much depend on the movie, but when correctly encoded, the experience is awesome...BTW, We don't have this paired with a SONY TV, so we're relying on the 'phantom' center channel...Truthfully, the dialog is crystal clear and without looking for it, you'd be hard pressed to know that there isn't a center channel...Also, our sources are linked directly to the A9, (rather than to the TV and then to the A9)...we've never experienced any 'drop-outs'!

I spend money on my video equipment (Z9D,A9G, Sony 885ES pj) & I expect to spend more on the audio, high end products costs but they last long and the experience is very nice. I like what Sony did with Sony HT-A9, minimalististic, large sound field, flexibility in placement of speakers. I will definitely get the Sony HT-A9 with Sony SW5 subwoofer, I still will have a huge system for my home theater but I like the fact I can get a high end audio experience with minimum wires & no large receiver in a smaller area than a home theater room, thanks for a solid review on Sony HT-A9 Caleb, take care!

One big limitation I see is that even with SW500, I am not able to pump up all the wattage at 80% volume. I have many songs with good lower base, and i am also using the equaliser in the Amazon music to max the base. But even then, I can see max 30% utilisation of the woofer. I think in the next firmware update, the amplification factor for the base should be increased by 3x.

I have both and to me the Ambeo is better if you add a sub to the Ambeo. Also the Ambeo needs to be in a room that’s inclosed to get the full effect. The A9 is great but way to many Audio drop outs. The Ambeo has more fidelity to it and sounds more cinematic to me. If Ambeo had rears it would be the ultimate package and the A9 would not even be in the same league . Rears really add immersion

I bought this system in a local store with a really good deal, 25% off on all Sony lineup that day, i ended up paying 1499€. I paired it with my Sony A90J and I have to say that this is a really good system. The surround sound is amazing, even if my room has a huge gap on the left you can somehow listen to a phantom left speaker, the voice clarity is amazing too, you can lower your volume but still listen to voices and all the effects. I'm planning to buy the big subwoofer in the next months to complete the setup, but for me that I never had a home theater in my life the amount of bass provided by the HT-A9 itself is really good, I can't imagine with the sub. Another HUGE deal breaker for me compared to the A7000 or A5000 soundbar is the fact that there is no soundbar at all, i can leave my tv on his legs and avoid to put up a wall stand, only 4 speaker and no cables, amazing.

If you care more about aesthetics and fit in the soundbar crowd, this looks great. Everyone else will laugh at that price because for it, you can get a decent real home theater system that you can continuously upgrade to make better. This on the other hand is a one and done deal - there is no upgrade path. So you better be satisfied with it because there’s no way beyond.
