Sony FX9 - Special FX?

Ғылым және технология

After operating the new Sony PXW-FX9 for a few weeks now, I thought it was time to review my first impressions. Was it the best camera I could buy?

    Thanks for the comment... actually I did do the usual test for rolling shutter and decided the video was getting too long! In fact, there's nothing much to report. It's all pretty acceptable without being amazing. Obviously, there's a little more rolling shutter when shooting Full Frame... but if you need to do a fast pan you could always drop down to S35 for the shot. The S35 mode did seem better than my F5... but I'd have to get both cameras together for a definitive comparison.

    Absolutely loved your review. I’m about to purchase an FX9 as soon as they are in stock and this just reinforced my decision. About the stabilization, though, isn’t the 28-135 lens stabilized and did you test it at all?

  • @extrashot

    @extrashot

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hi Ryan... thanks for the kind comment. Yes the 28-135 does have optical stabilisation and it works quite well... if slightly subtle way! I've been using it a lot as most of my clients don't want to be bothered with another workflow step through Catalyst Browse for the internal stabilisation with the motion sensor. (Sony need to produce those plug-ins for FCPX, Premier, AVID and Resolve asap). I have done some tests with both methods... and the first surprise was that the I.S. will only work in post if all of the O.I.S is turned off on the lens (or any lens for that matter). I believe a lot of the accuracy Sony have achieved with the I.S., and the motion sensors, is because they need to know exactly what the lens is doing with regard to focal length, focus position and movement... so it you turn on the O.I.S. it doesn't know what's happening !!! Trouble is... you're usually sitting in post before you realise you can't use the motion sensor stabilisation from the meta data... so don't forget to turn off O.I.S. if you want to try it.

    Thank you for the kind comment. You're right the loupe is not the best design. The picture on the actual viewfinder screen has improved, with much higher resolution, and the squared off bar does help stop it all drooping! But really, Sony should have given this a bit more thought. Sometimes, I wonder if they are actively helping the 'after-market' suppliers? 😳. Cheers, from Bournemouth!

    Enjoy your new camera Paul! By the way the parody craftsman piece with the added bandages detail, gave me a good laugh. A bit of a bummer about the lack of variety of real power inputs but no doubt third party solutions are already designed and soon on the way. Is the perceptual graded picture quality better than that you saw coming from the Panasonic S1H graded footage? TheFX9 will no doubt be a very popular run and gun broadcast camera as well as a cheaper higher end documentary alternative. A good and reasoned choice.😃👍🏾🙏🏾

  • @extrashot

    @extrashot

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hi Eugene, that's a good question... and a very subjective personal judgement, but I think the FX9 wins for me... that sensor is just a peach, and the way it handles highlight roll-off is up there with the best. Obviously, on a cost basis the S1H is amazing... and when you can output RAW onto an external recorder it might be a different story?

    Very good overview. I own two FS7's and the FX9 is the next logical upgrade. You can easily load custom LUTS into the FS7 so it should be possible with the fx9. What I like about the fx9 is the focus tracking, and out of the box useability. You can set this up on the FS7 and even use Venice type LUT designed by Alister Chapman I think. There's also lots of “hyper-gamma” modes too which look very good. My FS7's will probably become B cams ... Only one wish and that's inbuilt optical stabilisation but you can't have everything.

  • @extrashot

    @extrashot

    4 жыл бұрын

    I have heard a rumour that user LUTs may be coming... and the focus tracking might even get an 'eye' tracking at some point... but on the whole, I think this is going to be one of Sony's 'classic' cameras (and the FS7 is a very hard act to follow). I must say... compared to the F5 with it's difficult to adapt FZ lens mount, the FX9 is a joy for usability! Thanks for the kind words Chris, take care.

    Hi my dear colleague from the island. Thank you so much for your thoughts about the fx9. I like your style of mixing important information with British humor. Cheers for that! As I habe preordered a fx9 I am always on the hunt for news an tricks and opinions about my new future toy. One question: you mentioned horrible aliasing in a 2 k mode. Which mode do you exactly mean? As I will have to deliver FullHD in lots of cases to my clients it would be terrible to know a decrease in picture quality in certain modes caused by downscaling or anything like that. Thanks in advance, and keep on filming. Greez from Hamburg, Matthias

  • @extrashot

    @extrashot

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hi Matthias, don't worry... it's gets complicated with the FX9 because we've now got four (and possibly soon five) different ways to scan the sensor and two different output resolutions. You can scan the sensor at FF-6K S35-4K FF-2K and S35-2K If you scan the sensor at 6K or 4K the output resolution of 4K or HD looks great. The 2K scans are really designed to reduce the data rate in order to allow for super slowmo of 120fps in HD. It does this by skipping pixels which causes really bad aliasing, which you don't notice at 120fps but looks horrible at normal frame rates. Stay away from 2K scans and your clients full HD will look wonderful !!!

    I would like to do a review asap... I've played with one but haven't actually used it for any length of time. It's clearly a great camera, and obviously, the main competitor to the FX9. On the plus side, I really like having internal Canon RAW lite, it's a very nice codec, and the lockable IBIS, but on the down side it's very data hungry, which certainly goes through cards at some pace... and obviously, the price. It's 50% more than the FX9... this shouldn't matter at this level, but that's quite a bit of cash to most owner operators? The biggest question I have is the EF lens mount... that's getting quite old now and designed for DSLR's. I know there's a lot of EF lenses around but I can't help thinking this was the time they should have pushed the RF mount and included an adaptor? The pictures I've seen are very nice... it has that Canon 5Dm2 feel we all loved when it first came out !!!

  • @extrashot

    It depends how big your batteries are... at the moment I'm using 75Wh BP-U style, which, in theory, with the camera pulling 35W would be just over 2 hours. You can get this battery in 98Wh which would be nearer to three hours. Alternatively, if you put a V-Lock adaptor on the back then I seen these go almost to 300Wh or nearer to 8 hours continuous use. All of these figures should be taken as guides only because many things will shorten the running time... including the weather!

Then I can quickly switch formats safe in the knowledge that everything, (inc. shutter, frame rate etc.) goes back to where I want. I can tell you because I've tried them both... the FX9 is much cleaner. I suspect that it's a mixture of improved tech going on behind the Exmor R sensor, and just as importantly,, the full frame size physically collecting more light! Although the base 5000 is higher than the 4000 on the FX9 it actually feels the other way around simply because of the noise levels.

  • @extrashot

    @extrashot

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@retrospective That's a tougher question... I've always liked the look of the Varicam's... the 'colour science', or whatever we call that thing that makes them look so good out of the box, has traditionally been a big Panasonic selling point. For years, Sony haven't been able to get that right... although you could grade them to look good, it was always hard work. Things changed when they developed the Venice... they put a lot of work into making the look of that camera appeal to Hollywood DOP's. I feels like a lot of that effort is now trickling down to the cheaper cameras... everyone wants that 'Venice' look. IMHO the FX9 nails it. This camera is all about that full frame sensor. To answer your question is tough because it's such a subjective decision!

  • @retrospective

    @retrospective

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@extrashot I agree, Sony got the colour science so well with the FX9. It looks so good out of the box (w/ the Venice like LUT) and that's a rare characteristic that's usually reserved for higher-end cameras such as the Alexa. Usually, you need to "massage" it post to get it right. As an LT owner I'm drawn to the FX9's out of the box Venice like colours, lighter weight, and lower power consumption. I'm a big fan of your channel, I hope you can make technical and footage comparisons with existing camera's out in the market that's more or so priced around the same bracket as the FX9.

    I worked with the FX9 today. And I love it... so far. Especially in low light conditions. I need to do some extreme testing yet. Maybe next week. Also, I hope that new firmware will add all the things you mentioned. Good tip, to assign the High ISO to button 9. I had it on button 8. It happened a couple of times that I accidentally pushed button 8 with my cheek. I just changed it. Thanks! And I can't get the high framerate to work for some super-slomo shots. I now hear a 5K scan at 50P should be in the firmware soon, 180fps, and maybe even the return of user LUTs, lets hope Sony support it as well as they did the F5? It is a great camera... I recon it's the best Sony have done for years. Now... where's that manual?

    No in-body stabilisation.... but yes all my lenses with stabilisation work fine (even the Canons on a Metabones adaptor). The camera does have the gyro stabilisation using the metadata from the motion sensor - which is brilliant... but you can't use this at the same time as lens stabilisation... it needs to work solely from the camera movement and can't cope if it doesn't know what the lenses are doing!

    Congrats! I am considering this camera, it's... an almost a perfect looking camera. I never pulled the trigger on the Varicam LT last year, despite the price drop, because it felt like 4 year old technology, and this camera showcases some of where the future of medium tier cameras are going. Blazing fast autofocus, dual ISO, Variable ND... Those are all game-changers for solo doc shooters like me. My biggest gripe with this box is the 10 bit limit, not 12 bit internally, and not even 12 bit out the 12g SDI, only 16 bit, and somewhere down the road, any no-one knows quite how it will work. I shoot 12 bit now, on my 8 year old FS700 with my trusty old Odyssey, with it's dinosaur sensor, granted, but it seems strange that in 2020, this FX-9 doesn't offer this. Maybe there is a F5/ F55 replacement coming after all?...

The four worst things about the FS7 were the "viewfinder," color science, lack of power outputs, and overly complicated modes and settings. Seems like they fixed one of those, but they didn't make my job as an AC any easier. That viewfinder loupe is gonna break at least once every 3 months. Just insert it between the 12V output of the V Loc plate and the 19V DC input on the camera and you would more than meet the voltage and current requirements of the FX9. A water proof DC/DC converter with a 19V output and a 5A output that can handle up to a 95 watts draw with a 40MV ripple spec will fit the bill quite nicely. You could definitely build up the S1H into a lovely shoulder mounted cine style camera... It would be great value, but would it be as easy to use? I don't yet have the proper light boxes to do a definitive test for dynamic range between cameras... but the point to note here is that I was using the FX9 in original Cinetone mode... and even in SLog3 I left the exposure set where it was. If you were really out to obtain the best dynamic range, you'd expose to protect the highlights and give yourself more in the shadows. From when I try to properly grade the SLog3 'Clock Tower' shot, it looks to me that there's significantly more dynamic range on the FX9... I mean a lot more! Hi Robin, I've tried to keep away from S35 so far? At the moment, all the other lenses I'm using are my trusty old Canon EF selection. I've bought the Metabones EF to E Mount T CINE Smart Adapter, and I've been surprised by how well it's working. All the shots it "For The Love of Wood" were basically on Canon EF lenses... 16-35mm f/2.8, 50mm f/1.2, 70-200mm f/2.8. I've got an 8-16mm super wide, but obviously have to drop down to S35 for that. They all seem to work very well. The big surprise was that with the adaptor left in 'advanced' mode... all the usual metadata from the lenses works correctly... so image stabilisation, focal length etc are all copied across. (The camera needs this data for the gyro stabilisation to work in Catalyst)... and best of all... even auto-focus !!! Maybe not as well as a smooth Sony lens, but useable at a pinch. The longer term plan is to swap all my Canon glass to Sony... hopefully the new Cine lens when it arrives, but also a couple of G-Master.

Because its intuitive I dont think how I watch for discharge on my FS7 vlock - maybe I watch for it hitting 11.v (on the screen on the FS7) - Ive never had a conk out. - You would look not for 11.5 but maybe 18.2v or suclike (test first!) - you have do a few calcs on current as not all batts could deliver enough current, my hawkwoods can deliver aout 60w which is plenty (and also not enough for panels). ANother problem with this solution is accessing the Volts in port on the FS7. While I used to hang a Vlock from the back I changed to my Vlock being rod mount as it aids stripping the camera quickly for my gimbal or just a 'naked' setup.

    Sam Morgan Moore Because the battery is connected through a step-up regulator, you don’t get a proper voltage reading on the camera... what you see is a slight drop below 19.5V just before the now flat battery can’t drive the step-up regulator any more...!!! At which point it’s already too late. I’m planning a video demonstrating the issue and looking at the alternatives. I’m now thinking of including the £5 Amazon adaptor as part of the tests?

    Thank you for this sober (and sobering) review. Unfortunately, I can't forgive Sony for giving us a 'nicer' image while taking away so many features that I'd find useful in an upgrade. The 19.5v power is a horrid decision, as is the lack of IS. The icing on the cake is that I don't know of a single customer that will request this specific camera for a shoot. They'd more likely ask for a Red or even BlackMagic, especially if they're looking for RAW. Sorry Sony, you've lost me here.

    Fair point... and you have to go with what your clients are going to want. The 19.5v is a total mess, I have no idea what they were thinking! The lack of IBIS doesn't worry me so much... many of my lenses have IS (which works fine), and I'm sure the plugins for geo-stabilisation in post, will be here soon? The RAW thing is a strange one... I can't work out why they couldn't just put an output on the camera for the soon to be announced Atomos recorder? RAW is actually 'less' processing to do... and if Nikon and Panasonic can do it on a compact mirrorless, then why can't Sony on a large body pro camera? A lot of people who don't like the Sony are looking closely at the Canon 500m2... does that interest you?

    @@extrashot I switched from Canon when I went from HD to 4K, invested in Sony e-mount glass. So I'm tied into their eco-system for better or worse. But I'm also using Panasonic's M4/3 format, and if it weren't for the smaller sensors' difficulty in achieving a shallow DOF, I'd be much more interested with that format overall. 5-axis stabilization is becoming the norm in small form-factor cameras, as is high-speed recording without buffering. I know there are difficulties adding these to a larger sensor, but with a larger form-factor camera, I don't think that size was the issue for housing the additional electronics. It's just Sony protecting their other cameras...and second guessing what the customer wants. BTW, I love the subtle humor of your test shoot, adding all those injuries caught me by surprise...as did the 'reveal' ending.

    @@AwesomeShotStudios Cheers AwsomeShot.... I'm also still loving the Panasonic M4/3rd format as my 'B' cam for gimbal, jibs etc. I wonder if there'll be a GH6?... and if so, what could it offer to make me want to spend more money?

    @@extrashot Probably incremental improvements to the sensitivity, pixel density, IS, and focus. I'm not expecting huge changes from Panasonic. Similar to smartphone tech...but not making a great case for upgrading. Now, if they can give us global shutter, internal RAW and AI image enhancement, that would be compelling. I'd love to see a true HDR recording capability like Canon's Magic Lantern hack using multiple exposures within a video frame...if the motion interpolation issues could be resolved. That would massivly increase the 'apparent' dynamic range.

    Yes... but they said that about 4K on the F5 too... It may never shoot 6K, but that doesn't mean it's not capable! I think the main problem is what they charge Venice owners for the Full Frame 6K licence... this means they can't start adding it as 'standard' on a significantly cheaper model ???

    The menus in the F5-55 are archaic compared to these new Sony cameras. The delay from when you scroll, the weird way you need to dig into menus for things like audio adjustments. The user menu solves most speed issues. I wish you could map S35 mode to a button, but hopefully that will come with a firmware update.

    I dont like that fat tank he is driving, sorry. All that bulged up shape, totally unnecessary. Compared to earlier vans, the 80 had better designs, e.g. 1980-90s Toyota, Mazda, Mitsubishi, etc., with straight windows, easy to drive and park, less blind spots, no fat/bulged front and a joy to have. How do mechanics service or work on the engines these days?

    They definitely hold too much back for marketing reasons... as they have with the FX9... but I think it's a little harsh to say you never get a good camera? In it's day, the FS7 was amazing value for the quality it produced. Okay it had problems but if anything, it was too cheap!
