Interesting perspective on Mirrorless cameras vs Video cameras for video. I honestly think that the FX6 was perfectly designed for single user operation, rather than a crew. I think crew operation lends itself more to Venice and Alexa cameras. Plus giving up that built in variable ND (or just built in ND in general) is a tough choice. I too shot on the FS700, FS5, FS7, and F55, and now FX9 as a one person crew, and every time I have to go back to a mirrorless or dslr for video, I find myself wanting to pull my hair out. Constantly traipsing through touch screen menus to access the functions that are just a button press away on a dedicated video camera. Plus the battery life on DSLRs and Mirrorless cameras are a no go for most long form shoots. No ability to use bigger batteries, so have to have a good few on hand to keep swapping out. As far as the professional Sony menus go, to make them easier, all you really have to do is set up a User menu, and you can put whatever functions you want in whatever order you want within that first-page custom menu, and every thing is at your fingertips. Plus you can assign your most used functions to the physical user buttons, and you are able to access important features in a split second.

Great review. I traded in my FS5 for the a7S3, then wondered if I made a mistake when the FX6 came out. Apparently - I did not. The things that I hated on the FS5 are they things I would continue to hate on the FX6. The a7S3 - "fixes" all of those items. Great job, Jordan!

I think it is fair to mention that the FX6 got a firmware update in January - and now has the same touch-tracking autofocus as the A7S3. Also a couple of other nice features. I am an owner of both cameras - But I am mostly in love with the FX6. Variable ND for sure is the most important reason - but build in waveforms is another. It does lack the IBIS - which apparently is the trade-off for the electronic ND. Having both cameras is just great - they match each other and does well as a team. 💫😊

Fantastic Review Jordan, one thing about s cinetone is that the panasonic s5 actually have a very similar picture profile to the s cinetone, borrowing the colorscience from their varicam lineup, also has a very smooth highlight roll off, pleasing colors and around 11 stops of dynamic range, that profile is called cinelike d v2, which has a completely different color and gamma response then the normal cinelike d. And I found that if you push the hue to +2.5 it produces an extremely organic and pretty picture sooc under any circumstances.

Compliments Jordan about your thoughts about Cine camera's (for a crew?) and mirrorless camera's here now. I do read your DPReview for years all ready and always appreciated your website. Once it was Michael Reichmann with his The Luminous Landscape from1999. I guess you knew his site too? Michael was off coarse very different but that is fine, I won’t compare your site with his at that very different time also. But following you as a near alternative and also for many years now is a compliment I wish to give you and Chris and hope you will go on for some more years. Just stay yourself as much as you can both of you. So friendly greetings from Utrecht, Holland. Onno Nugteren and yes into photography and filming also for many years. :-)

He had set the AF speed to 4 for one scene, but forgot to restore it back to 1 for the static shot. This resulted in hunting. Here’s link to PB review. You’re just gonna have to shell out the big bucks if you want a Sony cinema-camera with an intuitive menu system and get the Venice. I also really don’t like that they’re all getting rid of the EVFs. So many DPs say it changes the way you compose and are contented with the scene. I’d love an EVF for tripod or handheld setups, but now I’d have to pay another 1400 bucks or more for one of the Zacuto ones.

I disagree with your comment that a7siii is for solo shooter and Fx6 is for with crew. On the contrary FX6 is designed for solo shooter who wants faster workflow without rigging such as 1) variable ND filter 2) Ability to use bigger size battery . Running phantom XLR power with A7siii audio adapter drains the battery real fast. 3) Better ergonomics and buttons layout for quick access 4) Ability to output SDI and HDMI at the same time. Don't need splitter or converter. 5) Can do more kind of jobs than A7siii. Other than the usual short film, documentary, and corporate videos, can also send video feed to video switcher for live music/sports event thru SDI for lower latency than HDMI Actually FX6 is more bang for the buck than A7Siii IMO.

Honestly, I can’t agree until I get my FX6 hopefully next week. Hard to assess without actually shooting with it. The A7S3 is lovely to shoot with. The smart shoe adapter is easy to deal with. However, VNDs are an issue. And all that I have used change the color of the image. I haven’t noticed a massive battery drain... and I have the lavs, XLR and the new shotgun mic... all the use the hotshoe, and no noticeable drain. But I would love S-Cinetone and the ability to turn off noise reduction.

Cameras hunting at 0:22 and on for 20 seconds(background) is pretty bad almost if it was shot with fuji x-t200 or 30,unless it was shot with manual focus and Chris was hunting like a Fuji autofocus system

How is it possible that Sony *still* keep their different teams compartmentalized!? It's ridiculous! They need to advance to a unified interface ASAP. It beggars belief that their A-mount, CyberShot, E-mount and Cine cameras *all* have various body, input, and digital interface designs.

It's the same image as the A7S III. The R5 4K HQ image is sharper than the A7S III image so it would also be sharper than the FX6 image. But the Sony cameras would still have an advantage in terms of dynamic range and high ISO performance.

I really feel Sony dropped the ball with this camera: given how amazing the A7siii is they really needed to put the boat out with this, but the various flaws that have been pointed out make it a bit of a “meh” camera. It is not a camera for crews but for owner-operator doc and Tv work, so it should be much less clunky to work with. Maybe they’ll bring out a new version in a year or so which will rectify these issues.

This way of putting out video cameras with so many compromises is just a big "NO" from a buyer point of view...I've even more respect for Black Magic Design now.

FX9, FS6, F3, 0? How funny would a smaller Sony 'cinema' camers body look? Like those static production cameras? Small box?
