I hate how much I love it 😬

I'm not a pro yet but seeing as Sony designed this to be a video camera, it should probably be reviewed as such. And I totally agree, gotta use the right tools for the job. I never liked going the hybrid route, trying to do it all with one camera so I stayed away from the Sony A1. I completely skipped over mid-range cameras, put away my old Canon S90 point 'n shoot, and dove completely into pro gear. I watched endless amounts of Canon and Sony video reviews and I am still happy with my FX3. This camera has seriously opened doors of opportunity for me. Everyone loves the videos it takes and they are blown away by its low-light capabilities. Great video sir.

This cam and FX30 changed my filming style! The 4K-120/60 cover all the ground I need to produce dynamic images. If they ever add a global shutter to these cameras…oh my goodness 😳🤯🙌🏽😎

C70 user here. I just got the FX30. Thinking of switching to FX3 only to be able to use 20-70mm lens. The FX30 is an impressive piece of gear. Some annoyances - 2 channel proxy only? Why oh why? I’m not 100% sold on color science. The C70 looks better in more situations, Sony tends to look good in some scenarios and not so good in others. But I need to have more time with it. One tip. I got Lyre mounts and unscrewed the Sony mic Mount, screwed on the Rycote Lyre mounts with the same screws. So easy, isolates better, is more durable, is more flexible. I highly recommend.

How are you enjoying the fx30 now? I have a C70 and R3 and I’m thinking about switching to Sony and getting a fx3. It’s a really tough decision.

I own an Fx3 and understand most of your hates except for the photo ease button & evf issue the reason being this camera was not intended to be a hybrid, it was marketed as a compact cinema line camera. Sony has tons of hybrids available with that in mind. otherwise good analysts and video

The high temperature option is there since the first firmware, the camera heated probably because it was on standard

Yeah, that is what was annoying, firmware 1.0 had it set to standard by default, for v.2.0 it is now set to High. I learned the hard way. Thanks for watching and the comment Pedro!

Great Video! I'm currently using the GH5 and looking to upgrade to a new full-frame camera. I'm torn between the S5iix and the FX3. Do you think the extra cost for the FX3 is worth it? I’ve watched several footage videos from both cameras on KZread, especially in the music video genre, and I find Sony’s look much more modern and cinematic. And you look like Usky.

I love the FX3 it is so much better then when I made this video, firmware updates fixed lots of my gripes with the software. You can't go wrong with either of the cameras - if you like taking photos and videos a lot - go with the S5iix - the FX3 is a cine camera with a beautiful image more than a photo camera, I haven't taken a single photo with the Sony - I use my canon cameras for photos. I had to look up who Usky is, and yeah I kinda do! He has more muscles. ;) Thanks for watching and the question!

I have a metabones speed booster adaptor & external recorder, and focus primarily on manual video. The over-heating can be tricky, but I have learned to be patient using it optimally. Apart from that, it's only the lack of ND filters that bother me. Good review

Well, I have the Sony FX3 and it’s a cinema camera. So I wouldn’t expect it to have all the capabilities of the R5 in the photo department. That’s not what it’s made for. That’s like expecting the FX9, FX6 to take photos as well. Which that’s not what they’re made for! It’s made to film! Not photography. But the Focus breathing is on point. Hopefully they’ll fix this in an future firmware update.

Hi Rafael... if you would have to choose between keeping C70 and R5C or selling them and taking FX3 + FX30 would you change (no money on the table)? I am a bit sick of Canon and the trade offs I have to face everyday and also I was deluded by Canon service (for repairs)... Your opinion really does matter to me. Thanks!

Thanks for the comment on the auto-focus "breathing" by the way! I didn't know there was a term for the issue and I thought I was just an idiot who didn't know the right settings. Nice to know I am somewhat sane...LOL, very frustrating!

Agree. Much to like with the FX3. Only had mine a short time and trying to understand what settings are best for me as a newbie to video shooting. V3 firmware brings a heap of upgrades incl. focus breathing compensation on GM glass. So I'm sure you will be loving that now. I guess mixing systems is always going to bring another layer of complexity. I'm lucky now just working with Somy cameras and lenses. Time moves on and solutions to yesterday's problems emerge. You will have probably found on eBay and elsewhere the low cost split-rubber rings that shim out the mike holder on XLR top handle permitting use of high quality mikes, circa 19-20mm diameter, like Sennheiser's MKE 600 or MKH 416. No plug-in electronic viewfinder is a disappointment, but when I want to dhoot stills then I generally pack my a7iv which also does pretty good v video, even if not quite matching the FX3's low light and high frame rate capability.

I doubt it. It’s not part of Sony’s strategy. I use the A7siii and there’s been little to no support. The Nikon Z9 however and other Nikon cameras have seen incredible support.

@@maximumguitarage pretty much. As a software developer, it's hard to say how much of it they can or cannot change. In principle, if a camera is designed on a generic microprocessor, then it mostly should completely be able to update to support the new features. But! There may be certain issues preventing this, in particular on how the PCB and chips are put together to work. Looking at the fact that the FX3 had a major update of firmware, then I would lean towards the fact they just want you to buy new cameras, a sales strategy, not a technical limitation.

Is it worth to update it now? It was some update issues recently,reason why i haven’t did the update just yet

Thanks for the review, very on point. I have been a C200 user for a while now and I am considering selling it to get an FX3. Do you think the image quality and colors are on par with a C200 and have you shot RAW with the FX3 yet? Can they be matched well?

focus breathing comes from the lens and not from camera, you have to use cine lenses, i mean real cine lenses to get rid of it

The focus breathing is a real issue for me also and I’m using Sony glass. I hope that they put breathing compensation on the next update.

Thank you, you answered all of my questions about this camera. Specifications are one thing, but real life is another story. I am a Canon user and I was just tempted by this small yet powerful camera...Anyway the breathing is really bad. And I am starting to think that every camera with IBIS will have such a week point... I have a feeling that C70 might win it...

It's hard to recommend Canon these days, I am still a fanboy but it's unclear where canon will go with future cameras. The Fx3 ticks many boxes but not all, and still on the fence if I should slowly transition to Sony. Still hopefully Canon will come through. Have to be patient. @@RafaelLudwig after spending whole weekend by looking at cine line cameras (small cameras) I must that you are absolutely right… i am tempted to switch. As I am lost with lenses on c70 - adapter, no adapter, rf lenses with no wide lens, speedbooster or no? But then I will have to buy ef lenses again - which I sold. Thats painfull… i was hired for next week to shoot with fx3 so at lesst I could test it… thank you again.

Sony A7iv vs. FX 3 vs. FX 30, which one should | buy for outdoor KZread videos and also cinematic shots in some time at night?

I did not know about the focus breathing. I am working with a Sony a 73 and have used many other cameras, I am constantly switching between manual and auto focus. There is a real art in knowing when to use which.

They sell inserts for the mic on eBay and Amazon..

I have a LOVE/HATE with all my cameras. That's 4 so far. It's funny cause the camera that has the least amount of usefulness I'll probably buy a second of. Weird how it all works.

To be honest, the focus breathing happens mostly with g master lenses. My 35g annoys me. I have the tamron trifecta and I barely have any focus breathing

Regarding EVF, on the low-end Kamerar has one for about $30 and on the higher end, Zacuto has one for about $350. True they're compromises but they'll get you there. Interesting that the new FX30 has focus breathing compensation whereas the FX3 doesn't. The FX30 also has the color Focus Map feature whereas the FX3 doesn't. If they don't come with a firmware update I can't help but think there's going to be an FX3mkII next spring (by NAB?). The focus breathing solution has me seriously looking at the FX30 as APS-C (super35) is still very much an acceptable "film" standard. Viewers will find super35 depth of field OK. On the other hand, focus breathing on the FX3 detracts from the image if you're changing focus. I'd hate to buy a camera with that issue and may be replaced with a newer version. Also not having Shutter Angle is a bother when changing frame rates. Regarding Canon lenses, if they're EF won't the MC11 get you there. In fact some even recommend the Sigma 28-70 EF with MC11 over E mount because the EF version is stabilized and retains that with the MC11 whereas the E mount is not.

Hey man, I'm a c200 shooter and like you looking for a good B cam, FX3 high on the list. Just on your canon glass 'not performing well' on the FX3, do you mean in terms of using an adapter and trying to get autofocus etc, or do they just simply not work? Issues with image quality? I'm always on manual focus anyway so that wouldn't be an issue for me, any advice would be awesome cheers mate

I double up rubber spacers for my sennheiser mic. They’re invisible inside the mic holder.

My FX3 not getting the focus breathing compensation upgrade is a complete letdown from Sony. And it is a plain stupid brand strategy as it stops me buying G Master lenses. In fact, this is such a letdown that I am currently looking into divesting entirely from the system. Especially since Panasonic now has finally moved to phase detect AF - the only weakness their cameras had.

The AF is a problem...I've never had any camera focus breathes so much. I hope there's an update to fix it.

You’ll be happy to know the Fx3 and the a7S3 are both getting breathing compensation. I will never buy a camera without an EVF. People keep saying we don’t need one, we don’t need one… Because they’re stupid. Have you ever seen a real cinematographer or on a major movie not using an EVF? The answer is pretty much no!

I mean for the lense issue couldn’t u just use Meta Bones getting the converter from E mount to canon

Oh no that sucks about the overheating. They even included an entire FAN into the camera body to deal with that! 😒

@@RafaelLudwig I've now seen sh.. load of videos about the FX30 and if we understand the differences between the real deal and the new kid, it's going to give the best results with what we've got (when I buy it 🙂). Meaning not filming in extreme low light, being aware of the cropping and using it as an advantage with the right lens, getting inspired to also take advantage of focus breathing compensation, oh well, It's not just about it being cheaper, it's more than sufficient for what I'll need it for. The FX-3 has always felt like buying into the higher league, hence not really needing it all..

Something that gives the FX30 extra points over the FX3 or even a7sIII is that you can use APS-C lenses. On the two more expensive cameras, the sensor resolution is too low for digital zoom to be useful, so you're stuck with only full frame lenses. But on the FX30 you'll get a sharp image whether you're using APS-C or full frame lenses.

You are pretty picky. Focus breathing is a bonus. It’s not expected in any camera. Changing the power off setting to high is a hate? It’s a setting that you touch one time and never think about it again…

You must have a bad copy or update issue. I have never ever had overheat or focus breathing with my copy

Did you consider a bm 6k or 6k pro?

The lack of EVF is such a bummer!😂

Sony 35mm 1.8 has no focus breathing. It's a great versatile lens.

This or the a7rV?

I work as a professional cameraman. When we work we charge for our kit on top of our rate hence we own lots of expensive kit that production pays for and makes me money. Before I owned loads of kit I’d hire it and anything i dont own now hire and mark up the price. I also hire my kit to other camera people.

Yeah if you do this for a living then you have to have the tools for the trade. Like I’m a musician so I have 8 guitars, 1 bass, 2 Saxophones, all kinds of gear for a recording studio etc but still photography and videography / film equipment is much more expensive than music equipment. I’m watching reviews to see what kind of camera I should buy to do music videos or promo videos and I’ve never been more confused.

The fx3 is an A7Siii in a cine centric body. Putting Cine in the name does not make it a cinema camera. It has the A7Sii menu, sensor, all other internals. Does that Make the A7Sii a cine camera as well? What other actual Cine camera has a dedicated photo mode? 🤔. FX3 is a hybrid camera in a video focused body. That is all.

@@dimitrimoonlight R5C is the closest thing to a true hybrid. Large sensor for photos, Cine centric menu. - It's not a perfect camera. I chose the Fx3 because it performed better in video mode. It's a great camera. But the annoyances are just that. Annoying. The R5C wobble is the biggest reason I don't want it, it would make too much footage unusable Professionally. Also how is the Fx3 different from the A7Siii besides the body?

@@RafaelLudwig A7siii has 27.45% more megapixels, only shoot up to UHD. It has 132 more focus points. 2160 x 120fps vs 2160 x 60fps. Has a tilting viewfinder. It Has pixel shift shot.

@@dimitrimoonlight You do realize these differences are between the Photo and video modes of both cameras. They have the exact same35 mm full frame (35.6 × 23.8 mm), Exmor R CMOS sensor, and use the same focal points in video and photo modes respectively. They shoot the same formats, At the same frame rates. They both have tilting view finders. Check the Sony website to see for yourself. They are the same internal cameras.
