Sony FE 28mm f2 - Lens Review

This is the Sony FE 28mm f/2 Lens, it is a compact wide-angle lens for full frame Sony cameras like the Sony a7iii but it also works well with APS-C cameras like the a6000. In this video I’m going to talk about why this lens is such a great value, but ultimately why I personally don’t use it very often anymore. In this video I do a comprehensive review of the lens, talking about the build quality, the performance in both video and photos and how it compares to current options on the market.
Thank you for watching the video, if you enjoyed it please consider subscribing and liking the video, it helps a tonne. I hope you have an awesome day!

    Great and honest review. I use it and like it very much for its autofocus but not so much for not being too sharp around the corners. i think for the price is an unbeatable lens. Very light, silent and good in low light. The super 35mm crop is an excellent add on to the lens with an A7iii. Thank you for your review. Subscribed.

    Great review, and with no distracting music.. I am planning to buy the 85mm f1.8 sony.. and I am looking to have a combo lens for my apsc. I want a full frame lens so I can use it on my a7ii. would this be a good combo? A 42mm equiv on the a6000 and an 85 on the a7ii? I will slowly work on buying gear out of the money that I gain using my gear, 24mm sony g master is expensive, and the 20mm is still expensive but is a great option if it is already available in my country.

    Thank you very much, I think this lens pairs really well with an a6000 and a7ii. This lens is going to be a way better value then the 35, 24, or 20mm, with that said in the future you might outgrow it but in terms of versatility I think you're really enjoy it. I sold my copy, but only because I replaced it, the only other options I would consider if I were you would be the new Tamron prime lenses, they're great values and a nice size

    I have been on the fence on this lens. I am a new YT'r. I do not have a YT photography channel but enjoy the hobby. I am trying to fit out a new kit for my recently purchased a7iii. I already own a 6400 which is amazing. Not sure why I need the a7iii besides gear lust. As I fit out my kit I want to get FE lens that would work with my crop sense camera as well. I enjoy street photography so the 28mm will be interesting. Thanks for the video.

    Great video! Maybe you could help give me a suggestion. I was strongly considering getting this lens because I need a wide angle lens (I have the 70-200 f4) and I want a lens that will do really good for astrophotography but also have autofocus so I can use it for other things with easy. I figured that this lens would probably accomplish that and DXOMARK has this lens ranked pretty high in sharpness but now you got me thinking that I need to get something else that will be better for astrophotography. Do you have any suggestions for around $500 that preferably has autofocus? Thanks 🙂

    Hey thanks! I don't mean this lens can't can't do astro, I just mean if that's all you want it for there are lenses that can do better as dedicated astro lenses. With that said I have heard pretty good things about the Tamron 17-28mm f2.8 and have seen a few nice astro shots from it people took but I havnt used it myself. I've used the rokinon 14 and it performs well but youre totally right that it's manual focus and it's just not flexible at all. I just personally didn't love the sony 28mm performance of this lens for astro, but I'm very picky, I think it's totally ok, just not the best, but it'll be still very versatile

  • @ZyaLuke

    @ZyaLuke

    4 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for the reply 🙂 The Tamron 17-28 is a bit out of my price range at around $800 (maybe I need save up more). I wouldn't mind trying a Rokinon but from what I've read it can be really hit or miss whether or not you get a sharp lens, quite a few people say that they go through several before getting a sharp one and I hate the hassle of returning things. I always spend entirely too much time researching and trying to get the best bang for my buck and lenses are particularly difficult to shop for IMO. I see a lens that I like, great reviews, low aperture, decent price, then I start reading the description and it says aps-c (if it even says in the description). And then when it comes to focal length I'm not sure exactly what to get because my previous camera was a Sony Cybershot mega zoom point and shoot camera and I've only had my a7r2 for about a month and a half. I got the 70-200 f4 to go with it and it's a great lens for the most part, though I do wish I had more reach for wildlife photography. Ugh! Lol

    Good day. Sony 28.0 2.0 or Sigma 35 1/4 for video which is better?

  • @ShaneBethlehem

    @ShaneBethlehem

    5 жыл бұрын

    It's hard to say, the sigma is definitely going to get you more 'cinematic' shots with the 1.4 and the longer focal length, but the 28 is cheaper and smaller and realistically for most video work f 2.0 is a shallow enough depth of field that it would be perfect for any wedding work or something where you want to make sure you're in focus as much as you can. Personally I prefer the 35 mm though and I use the sony 35 for most of my work

  • @ShaneBethlehem

    Yea the 18-35 is such an awesome lens, its a legit reason to just use APS-C. I went the route of the 55 1.8 and the 35 1.4 and I manage quite well with that set up, and my usual wedding lenses are the 35 1.4, 55 1.8 and the 85 1.8. I now have been playing with zoom lenses more but I always prefer using the primes when I can, the only issue is that they are so expensive :/ you will never complain about a lack of quality with those lenses though, they are all sharp as heck

    I've owned this lens for a few years, and I think the video majorly downplays how good it really is. It's versatile and fits in my pocket easily, and it produces great images. I edit using Capture One which has a built-in correction profile, and I haven't noticed any serious loss of flexibility while editing compared to my other main lenses (55/1.8 and the 90/2.8 macro). I use it for landscapes and inside abandoned buildings for urban photography. I've also shot animals, pets, etc. without any complications. If you're getting into the Sony system and prefer primes to zoom lenses, this is honestly a must-have (unless you can afford to pay 2/3 times as much for only marginally better performance).
