Sony FDR-AX53 Camcorder - Review Update and Accessories

In this video, I update you on how I like my new Sony camcorder I purchased last summer - See initial review post and video - www.loveyourrv.com/love-your-...
I go over several of my favorite features and a few dislikes, then show off some of the accessories I've since bought for it.
Later I demo it's remote wireless operation by my smartphone using a WiFi connection. I capture video and photos of a hummingbird feeding.
At the end of the video, I test out my new K&F Concepts wireless lavalier microphone system.

I bought this camera years ago, and remember being disappointed at how "plastic" it felt. Got an IPhone around the same time, and moved 3 times in 4 years, so I never really learned to use the Sony. Gradually, its parts got separated into different boxes. Now I have rediscovered it, and your video was the first one I watched... Wow, I had no idea I was carrying around such a capable camera. I thought it would be out of date by now. I love how you reference the user manual for all your statements in the comments -- you must be a teacher or scientist. It was helpful because the manual is one of the things I am missing. Thanks for a great introduction to the AX53 and I hope you are still getting good footage out of it.

Nice review. I always prefer long term reviews of items like this. There is just too much that can be overlooked in "unboxing" videos. I like the addition of the lav mic. Their have been a few videos over the last year or so that I found myself thinking you would benefit from one. I like the outro it allowed for too. Cheers. *Salutes back*

Great history of Zeiss lenses includes the difference in quality between the East German site and the West German site. The East German factory was producing optics far superior to the West German plant. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the two plants merged and the new company took off. I have used binoculars produced in the East German plant and they were outstanding. Sony is smart to use Zeiss.

Great to see another youtuber who Works with Sony handy camcorders, I have two smaller ones, the Sony cx 405 and the Sony hdr 10je. I am thinking off upgrading to this one, I saw some depth to field shots I like and the 120 frames per seconde ability to make great post slowmotion are features I am looking for plus the Inside stabalisation. I cant figure out DSLR camera's so I will stick to Sony handy camcorders. I use external mics ,glad to see there is a hotshoe now. Thanks for this clip and greetings from the netherlands

Neato! Love electronic toys like that. Especially love the ability you have to video and photograph the birds. It's funny how as you were testing out that wireless lapel mic that we could hear you great, but it was almost as if you were standing beside the camera off to the side and video taping some other dude off in the distance. We'll need to get used to that! Hey. I noticed the mic on the top of the camcorder has quite the wiggle to it. Is that by design? Thanks, Ray. Good stuff.

  • @LoveYourRV

haha, yeah it was kinda weird to watch back. :) Yes, that's sort of a shock absorber for it, so vibration on the camera doesn't migrate into the mic. Not super sophisticated like some with springs and stuff, but it works OK. I plan to upgrade to a better mic at some point but they can get pricey. Cheers, Ray

These are fantastic cameras. 4K is really sharp but unfortunately only 25 fps so motion blur is noticeable. I always use HD high frame rate and picture quality is fantastic so no need for 4K plus it’s easier to edit. I always use the viewfinder as light doesn’t affect the screen and it’s adjustable like a still camera so I don’t need to wear glasses. I also use a Rode stereo video mic pro with a Dead Kitten fur windshield which is a big improvement over the built in one. ( much clearer sound ). I recently used the mic.on a cruise in Europe and on the front of the ship with strong winds and it did a great job. The 5 axis stability is amazing as well as the low light capabilities . I was in a small boat in Malta filming the Blue Lagoon in choppy seas and the stability did a great job. I also have the Sony action cam with the same stability and video out of the front of the car are absolutely still when it’s mounted on the windscreen. Delve into the menu and you’ll find some great fun things as well, like the ability to pluck out a single colour eg. red and the rest is black and white. Like you said it’s a bit bulky but definitely worth putting up with.Really is a great camera. Thanks for the great review.

I’m picking mine up Tuesday, had to be ordered in from Sony. These tutorials are very helpful. I’ve been using a JVC Everio GZ-HD10 so this will be a good upgrade. I’m wondering how the gimbal (although it’s not really a true gimbal) will stand up to the rough and tumble of being in a truck, because I think it will be moving constantly when driving on rough roads. Any thoughts on that? Your video is very informative.

Extremely impressed with your presentation (watched quite a few). You have a new subscriber.

  • @LoveYourRV

Thanks. It varies with resolution and frame rate. If I remember right the camcorder has a small onboard memory. They expect you to buy your own card or some bundles include one. I bought a 64GB card amzn.to/3xeObcM Its worked perfectly. I mostly shoot in the best quality HD mode and 30 frames and get about 2 1/2 hours which is plenty for me doing KZread videos. In 4K it drops to about 2 hours or so. High speed record which uses 120 FPS 1 hr. 20 mins. Cheers, Ray

I watched your video over again and picked up on your T shirt, are you a Dutchman hunter? In my younger years I did about 10 trips to the Superstition Mtns, 3 trips by horse back using Don Donally (sp) Stables out of Apache Junction to take us way back into the interior. Had lots of fun, but no gold. Our first trips were in the late 60s and let me tell you it was rough country and some rough prospectors back there. Anyway enjoyed your video and I just bought the AX53 yesterday, your video was helpful in making my decision.

Get a “ dead cat” windscreen for the lapel mic, it will sound much better then using the stock foam one . I could hear a little wind noise or rubbing of a mic on your shirt during your brief test and that dead cat windscreen would take care of that problem

Will do, thanks for the advice. I actually think the noise was the wire connection plug on the wireless pack, I had the wire tucked inside my shirt and I think it was tight and pulling on the cord as I walked, so got a few partial disconnects type sounds. I haven't played with it much so still learning. Cheers, Ray

Great video! I’m thinking about upgrading to this camera from my Sony a6000 for my scuba diving videos. Just out of curiosity, was that footage at about 3 minutes in from the Galápagos Islands by chance? I visited there back in 2018 and got some great footage on my a6000.

Since this video it has been changed by Sony to an app called Imaging Edge support.d-imaging.sony.co.jp/app/iemobile/en/

I think that a bigger windsock for your microphone would solve the noise problem, the one you have looks kind of small. I think you can find several models as aftermarket products.

Makes sense, it's the one that came with the mic.

Great review!! You mentioned uploading being a little difficult due to file size. I was wondering, if I go for 4K videos, since the maximum video resolution that KZread plays your videos at is 1080p, is it worth getting a 4K camcorder? Thanks!

I thought it was very much worth getting this 4K camcorder even though for my purpose I would mainly be using it for HD videos. Reason being because it has the 4K sensor chip the extra pixels are being used to improve image stability and extend zoom when in HD mode, plus great still photos. I think it's just an OK 4K camcorder but a fantastic HD one. Perfect for the type of KZread videos I do. Cheers, Ray
