Can a 20 plus year old CD/DVD player sound as good as todays CD Players?

That machine, for its age is in amazing condition. That's Sony for you.
Thanks so much for the shoutout Marty really appreciate it I found the same thing the Dac inside the Sony is fantastic even compared to my Arcam SA10 and if I’m correct this machine from Sony was £550 back in the day I’m so glad you bought one they look even better in black 👍🏻🇬🇧
The giant remote is a definite plus; ain't no way that's getting lost!
I have a Pioneer 717 dvd cd player with the twin laser pick up . Unbelievable value at £60 in great nick . Even has the startrek remote control.

My first player the 717. Sadly now broken after a voltage surge took out the video DAC. But.... still going strong is my Pioneer DV- 737 whose picture quality holds up to the 717.
I had a DVP-S715 at the End of the 90s. It was Sony's first DVD Player. DVDs were very expensive at that time, but of course this medium was revolutionary compared to VHS and money does not play at a role here. Viewing my first DVD (matrix) i was so impressed by the picture quality, the sound and the DVD has also a menu with additional stuff. It was absolutely amazing.
I have this player too. Fantastic build quality and attention to detail. If only the laser could recognize/play cd/dvd's. So sad I cannot enjoy it anymore.
I just bought a DVP-S705D,look the same , this day for 30 euros with remote, and i fall on your video 😁 Thanks for the test 👍 Love it for the price 🤗
If you had told me that it could play Blu-Ray DVDs too, I would have went for an all out search for one
I have this kind of vintage Sony (few €, in a thrift store) that plays Sacd disks also ( that's why I bought it) . Dvp-NS-700p. Have it in storage as backup sacd player.
Had a look at this one as a cheap backup cd player but spent the princely sum of £63 on a mint Arcam dv 88+ instead, great sounding unit with Wolfson dac chips, was a £1k machine when new, great review, high-end dvd players still have their uses 😀
It looks like solid and well built, one of the good Sonys
Hi I like your review and your good humour here. I bought one of these players very cheap at a local charity shop and 100% agree with you on your opinion of the unit. What you said about comparing the Dac of the Sony with the internal dac of an amp is interesting. I have a Rotel RC 1590 preamp .. the Rotels internal dac was slightly better to my ears. I'm running a large vintage Jbl Altec speaker system with Accuphase and Rotel power amps so it's very revealing...if there is nasties on a recording this motley crew of gear hits me between the eyes while the good stuff sounds fantastic. When you go to the mega dac end of the scale there is a jump in performance. A mate of mine runs a Gryphon dac that is big big bucks. You notice space and air between instruments more and an almost analog effect with only 16 bits of info at standard cd quality. If I was cashed up ide go that far believe me. Also I compared this player $1200 Australian dollars at the time with a Rotel RCD1572 and a Nad C568 at around that price point. Hifi is only a hobby to me. I sold gear ages ago casually but I'm not good at sales lol.
11:33 not bad looking at all. For a £20 investment to get the most out of the picture though. I'd look for a component to HDMI adapter. That would give you a full RGB image at 480p60 or 576p/50 for PAL. Then you set would have twice the fields per second for the more stable Ypbpr progressive picture vs interlaced composite video.
I had this fantastic deck. DVD+R, -R made me dispose this off.
Ciao, i had this DVD Player in the late 2000's and liked it..
hi the sony decks were like this with alot of ad on's i had vhs hi-fi betamax hi-fi but i missed betacam sp hi-fi liner audioi now how as price of old decks is down alot and i can fix them i only seen 2-6 video on using betacam decks as recorders
I’ve had a recent similar experience. I purchased a Yamaha CDX-930 from the 90’s and a Yamaha CD-S303 that they sell currently and I can’t hear much of a difference. I guess DAC’s don’t make as big of a difference as some preach.
It is all very nice, but I was hoping for you getting the Leak cd player that would go nicely with your Leak amplifier and Linton speakers.😞

@@UTILITARIANTVUK To be honest, I rarely use it these days, but it still sits proudly under my TV. It’s built solid enough to blend in with my Hi-Fi separates too. CD’s sounds fantastic! It’s connected to my Hi-Fi via S-video. I’ve got an AV control amplifier. I would never part with it coz I’ll never come across a well built DVD player like that ever again!
The closest one to me is off a seller with 83% positive feedback. Moving on..

@@UTILITARIANTVUK haha, yea i think the 1 pic from a hifi mag was a sign. Youve got a good deal there mate. I think the silver gives it a more vintage look for its age.
Just out of curiosity do you know what DAC this player has ?

Yes, I used a Pete tong cd to test it. All the songs mix into each other and the player played them without any gaps.
