This changes everything for me. My main complaint about the whole sony system up till now has been the lack of a 40mm lenses besides the zeiss (which has meh focus). 40 is the greatest of all focal lengths in my opinion and I have bought several entire cameras just because of their 40s. This is truly a great day in sony land

You're right I think, such a versatile length for a fixed lens because you get a little more zoom and bokeh from the five extra millimeters over a 35m but it's not useful only as a "family lens" like the 50mms often are.

  • @JennyDarukat

This is exactly the kind of size I want from everyday carry lenses. Not super tiny pancake so they can still fit a good focus ring and controls as well as a real focussing motor that doesn't hunt or stop around constantly. Also 40mm is seriously great and a really underserved focal length - I always find 50 just took tight for my natural framing tendencies, and 35 gets a little distorted when taking some shots. 40 is just my favourite, so one that performs well optically and mechanically, and fits in your pocket is just perfect. Shame I'm not a Sony user though. Oh well, maybe one day..

What ND filter did you use with shots outside? Do you have a preference of one brand ND filter to another? I bought some $20 cheap filters which seem to be doing alright, but I can't help feeling like more expensive filters are better.

Expensive? These are 90% of the GM lenses for 1/3rd the price! They are actually a steal. You don't mention things like these have great weather sealing with 10 gaskets thru them or the fact they have dual linear motors for lighting quick and accurate AF. You wont find either of those things on budget lenses.

Could be tempted to switch away from my X-T4 for an A7C/III with one or more of these lenses to gain full-frame and better face/eye autofocus. But at the current prices the value proposition just isn’t there yet for me. Love the form factor of these lenses though. Looks very practical. If the A7III/C were, say, $1499 and the lenses $399 each...yeah. That jumpsuit is sick tho.

How does the 40mm f2.5 compare to the Canon EF 40mm f2.8 STM? It's an important comparison as, with adapter (which many Sony alpha shooters have on hand anyway), it's about the same size, almost the same aperture, and also has fantastic optical performance. The $600 price of the Sony seems pretty expensive when you can get the Canon plus MC-11 adapter for a couple of hundred bucks less....

Agreed. The 50mm was the first non-kit lens I bought for my a7iii and I loved it until I bought the 85mm and realized how good the 50mm could’ve been.

Sonys 28mm f2 is about the same price at $500. Also the sony 50 mm f1.8 is only $200-$300 depending on where you get it.

Yes, but I would say the 50/1.8 is a very disappointing lens, especially when it comes to focusing speed. Samyang costs like 50 percent more, but it is love on a first try. Sony really needs to get their shit together and make 50 that does not feel like third party lens adapted to different system and does not cost a ton of money.

@@PosranaRegistrace I don't disagree with you. All i was wanting people to know was that there were cheaper faster alternatives than these expensive gimicks sony put out. There's kid of no point in buying these if you don't mind a slightly biggerlens.

don't look at them, they are not in the same league and nothing to do with sony fe mount. these are overpriced plastic chinese slow focusers. look at samyang rather which are at third price brand new.

i like how he has lok's page at the end...what happened to bokeh bros!? canon RF 35mm 1.8 can be had around at around $400 while the 50mm 1.8 at $200 and they seem to be the same size as these sony lenses...sure build quality is probably better on these three and an aperture ring is nice but I really dont see how a prime lens that only has f2.8/2.5 justifies a $600 price tag...
