It's comforting to see that even an experienced repair man like you needs some time to figure out how to take apart an unfamiliar model number. I sometimes feel dumb when I discover I was going to wrong route, but maybe I'm too harsh on myself.

During lockdown earlier this year I found my Sony DVD/HDD recorder, which is in regular use recording TV still, was letting discs slip. It would spin them up just fine but when it needed to apply the brakes I could tell the disc wasnt clamped properly thanks to the loud "bbbzzzzz" vibrating noise it made :D Opening it up to extract the drive, simply to clean the felt pad on the drive spindle that helps clamp the disc, was hell. You opened one, a similar model and had much the same experience. That drive was locked into position in various ways, the most annoying of which was a PCB actually fixed onto the drive that slid in and out at a weird angle if you needed to insert the drive. The designers never intended the drive to come out so this weird angle was harder to achieve when removing it. All of that just to remove the layer of dust that had become stuck to the felt pad on the spindle. I swear Sony build these to survive a plane crash or something.

It is amazing how the device is able to read the very bad treated DVD and all the unit problem was caused by a broken pulley. All the mechanisms and electronics needed for disc reading and information processing to get such a great quality image is way way bigger than the complexity of a belt and pulley that finally puts all the unit out of work !! Great job by the way!

Yeah I have a Philips bluray player with HDMI only although I have a friend who has a bunch of earlier Philips blurays with composite and component but no HDMI - I guess 1st gen bluray units. Can't remember the model number but they're well built and reliable unlike my cheaper one which has the delightful habit of holding on to the disc when you open the tray, forcing you to remove the cover to get the damn thing out again :(

From the same production year (2009) as this BDP-S350, came the BDP-S550. Apart from Digital Coax and Toslink Optical, it has analogue 7.1 output. Analogue video outputs: composite, S-video, component on top of HDMI. The back is pretty crowded with sockets for everything on the BDP-S550. I guess what's missing is a SCART-socket....hmmm

From experience I'd have to say *most* discs stand up well over the years. Some, however, can have the slightest surface imperfection and won't play at all, or will stick/freeze or stutter. Other times a brand new disc won't play (it's been loose in the case?). Yet it's amazing how some heavily scratched (sometimes deeply) and (rarely but occasionally) warped/bent discs will play perfectly; with no issues! Different players may not play them or will have different issues, of course.

I bought the Sony BDP-S550 back in very early 2009, because it also had analogue 7.1 outputs in the back. It still ejects and pull the tray in with no problems, but have instead developed this phenomenon of "Not recognizing the disc". Most of the time, if the disc is inserted during the first seconds after a cold start, it will work. (Apart from untried hardware interference, this has proved to be the most succesful approach so far) Other times you'll have to hit open/close several times before it finally gives in and play the darn thing. And then again, at other times it doesn't matter what you do, it simply will not recognize the disc, even if it has played perfectly well a couple of years ago. But oddly enough, if inserting another BR, it might play fine. Sometimes, when the machine has this problem it won't even play CD's or DVD's. Listening to the difference between a succesful and unsuccesful loading of a BR, it's obvious, that it tries to read the TOC (Or equivalent to the BR-format), before giving some faint but healthy whirring noises (pick-up assembly going back/forth), spinning up and play. When unsuccesful, it stops before all these actions, so the problem must be with reading some initial stuff and therefore it could be a matter of a dirty lens. There's also a procedure for a factory resetting, that could be helpful. I tried it. However to no effect. Maybe reseating the cables could be recommended, or maybe not. Hmmm...better take this beast up and on the table to find out.

Even at the time of this video, I'm surprised the owner didn't just upgrade. This model is slow and doesn't play well with "newer" Blu-rays (it's not BD-J Profile 2.0). Some don't even load at all. See and buy newer Sony BD models without such issues at thrifts for less than $20 often. See this model and the S550 too for practically nothing nowadays.

@@darinb.3273 That problem started with the stupid marketing by American Express. They showed a little kid feeding the VCR and the parents using their American express card to pay for the repair because American Express offered free extended warranty. It never ended well though, because we didn't accept american express, and no repair shop I know of (none of the guys that knew that operated shops in my area) accepted american express due to the high merchant fees they charged. It was over double Visa and 3X mastercard. So the parent comes in with their VCR all fuxed up because little johnny or suzie stuck a sandwich or chicken bones in and then a tape went in after and made a real mess. Those folks got an extra charge because usually by the time it came in the food was moldy, or rotting. It was absolutely gross. Then they would whip out their AMX card and an argument would ensure at the service counter because we wouldn't take AMX. Then we became the bad guys. I didn't deal with the customer at the counter but I sure heard all the yelling, and the F bombs and how they were never coming back, and they were going to tell everyone not to come in because we were ripping them off.

sony made ok players for early bluray players. but god there 4k bluray players are hot garbage. if the disc even has a spec of dust on it the player will have trouble reading it and the players will randomly lock up there is tons of bad reviews with complaints of the issue and sony don't bother to fix it it don't matter if get the entry level $200 model or the top of the line $700 one they all use the same broken firmware only dif is features and build quality being better on the higher end one they also cheaped out and only put the counter display on the $700 model. panasonic is pretty much the only way to go for a standalone 4k bluray player unless u want spend a fortune for a bouquet brand fancy one.

  • @12voltvids

Have never used a 4k player. I understand that most of the problems stem from hollywoods attempt to keep ahead of the pirates so they keep upgrading the encryption which you need to update on the players. I am sure the old acient firmware on my oldest player would have problems with new disks, but I haven't bought a bluray or dvd in probably 20 years. I just use them for my own content that has no encryption on them.

    > randomly lock up Yep mine does that. However I got that thing for £30 from a charity shop that thought it was a blu-ray player so I'm not complaining. The most annoying thing is when it locks up, I need to pull the power. But the power cord is permanently fixed resulting in me switching everything off and on just because of that one device and I cant be bothered to rummage around at the back to try and identify which plug is for the 4K player. I dont hear a fan in this thing either. I have considered opening it to see if I can add one in case it is heat causing the lockups. This sony 4K player goes into some kind of standby state instead of shutting down fully. When it locks up, that takes out the power button as well, no matter how long you hold it, it will never force a restart as on other devices.
