I have a cool story for ya. RCA CD-9500, which is 300+1 CD player, bought from Radio Shack when I turned 18 in 1995. (Pioneer PD-F1009 precisely the same unit and I use its service manual.) It wouldn't play discs well at all when I tried it recently. I have been meaning to look at if for a really long time now. Over the past week, I took it all mechanically and electrically apart probably at least 30 times. Suffice to say, I am an expert on that aspect now. I cleaned the heck out of everything possible with alcohol - had the floating optical block out, inspected it, cleaned the lens a million times (because progress WAS made each time, believe it or not) - had crazy adventures trying to make the arm work, lost the spring that guides the optical block left and right with respect to the motor, lost a thousand screws inside the unit (found them all when it happened, here or there, yes all) - oh right, from removing it so many times, the cable to the lens and mainboard got messed real bad, so I cut the end off to fix it and it did the trick! I play with RF power (again, no scope) and hear the high pitch lens noise that I try to eliminate and often do while trying to get discs to actually load and not skip as well. It had an even worse time with CDR. As it stands now, I can get the machine to playback stamped discs reliably 100% of the time, but CDR very rarely. If I tweak power to lower, than CDR starts easier but THEN stamped won't start. So, it is all a cunundrum as it stands. I am sure the eye pattern is not perfect, but once again, no scope. Still somehow, I feel I will be able to get it to play anything/all reliably within one more day or so of messing. I shall see. If you or others are curious: www.manualslib.com/manual/1146761/Pioneer-Pd-F1009.html

The CD-880 is a gorgeous CD player. And what a shame to see how that shop treated it. If I would have seen a shop treat my CD-80 like that I definitely wouldn't be happy camper.

My mother has a combination piano and vacuum -tube organ. I bet that you would love to see it! It has many rows of glowing thermonic tubes, and a two-diode thermonic tube power supply, with, of course, point-to-point wiring. It works great. Although I can't play an organ, I can play octives and notes. I used the organ to record a fall-asleep tape of sustained notes. Frank

I used to have a 5 disc CD changer, and it was awesome. I had two of them actually. One had a tape deck also in it and it worked pretty well for a couple of years and then it stopped working after my mom and my sister and I moved to a different house. I ended up with a new one for Christmas from Santa Claus. I was so happy with it. My first stereo was not a CD changer, it was just a 1 disc CD and cassette player stereo. I I am having a problem with two of my portable CD players. One doesn't have any issues except that it makes a skipping noise when I play the same song over and over or have the CD at a certain angle. The other one has a motor that keeps shuttering and stopping while the CD is playing. The CD keeps playing but the motor stops vibrating even though it's still spinning. Is that normal for that type of CD player. The type of CD player I have is one of those that has an AC adapter for it that you can use in place of normal double a batteries if you have a rechargeable battery. Is this normal for this rechargeable style of CD player? It also has keys instead of buttons. This makes it easier for me to turn it on while I am holding on to it and it's easier for me to hold onto because it's thinner. I am blind and autistic and have cognitive delays because of my autism, And the new CD player which is cheaper, I sometimes have issues with and sometimes I don't. It is smaller than my other one a little bit and it is thicker and a little rounder than what works well for me. This one is working just fine no cuz it still has buttons. It really kind of sucks When I opened it to check it I noticed the motor was loose. This was on the rechargeable on. If was right inside of the player so I could see that right away. I saw it after I was wiggling it around. I am going to have it looked at by a friend of my mom's to see if he can try and fix it. I don't know what the problem is if it's just a loose motor or multiple things wrong with it, but I think it would be cool if you could let me know what you think I should do, and what your opinion is. Thank you.

Here is the problem. I do not know if the shop that had it last did this, or if it was pre-existing. Naming them would open the door for a lawsuit. So no they will not be identified. If the owner of it wants to go down that road that is his business.

That Philips CD880 always got me interested. I am very curious if I would listen to it, side by side with my own Technics SL-P202A, that came from the same time frame, was of the same good build quality but was cheaper then and a lot cheaper today to buy, if then I would be able to hear the difference or that I will have to say it's just snakeoil after all. Someday I will know, someday.

Another thing I have to add, is I use my CD player for my day program and my group home to help with behavior issues. Most of the time I use it for behavior issues out in the community or when I am with my mom or with somebody else traveling. That's why it's so important to me to have a CD player that I can easily hold on to and maneuver around. Especially without dropping it all the time.

Holly crap, what the hell did they do to that poor machine?, some days ago i finished restoring a philips cd 350 player with the Tda 1540a dac, two of them to be exact, and these machines are a pain to work with. All of those philips blue axial caps take a dump, and the machine starts going crazy, i had to change all of them on the machine to make it work again. Also those ribbon cables have a plastic conector that fails, and makes the machine go crazy, the laser would stop working or the motor would work backwards. But the most annoying problem and the one that took the most to figure out was that everything worked, except the stupid servo board, and the problem was that the 1k ohm laser pot on the board took a dump, and intead of being 360ohms it was 13k ohm!. Fortunately its been working for a month now, solid stable. Good video, keep it up!

For the chip to send binary digital data to the other audio chip, it should store it in a parallel shift register consisting of J K flip flops. Obviously, that J K chip will be nicely timed by an appropriate quartz timer for fast speeds, or a 555 for lower speeds of data transfer. Frank Reiser M.S.

They stay in business because they charge 80-100 "estimate fees" and then when it doesn't work out they still get paid. I see many things that have been through this shop. The JVC dual deck with the cracked board apparently had also paid a visit there. I should start seeing more musical instruments as I have done a few Hammond organs lately, a B3 and B3000 and once your name gets out in that community everyone comes calling. Dave, I have a question... Did this customer know about the services that you offer before they bought these units into these unfit repair shops? In essence I would be insulted if they didn't bring their units for servicing to me first to begin with.. Pending on what kind of business relationship I would have on this client, I would only work on these units under the condition of the attempt and cost of repairs is at their own risk with no promises nor guarantees being that a failed repair attempt has been made on the unit even after if the unit was working when it left the shop!

I would cease to do anything to the unit at that point, because you have zero idea what has been done to it or what has happened that resulted in that mess. There is no way that I would continue working on it. I'd be praying that I can show the mess to the customer, not get blamed for it, and get it out of the shop ASAP.

I do have pictures right. It is called a video. I have not done anything to this unit except measure a few voltages, and re-soldered the pins on the "bodged" IC and I will be having a chat with the client before doing anymore work on this unit. I am quite certain that after he sees the condition he will have a chat with them. However he did buy it used, and he did replace the laser before taking it to the shop in question, so he will know if that chip was like then when he got it, or if the shop he took it to did that. I will probably give him a call tomorrow and show him the pictures.

Yes that is exactly how I feel. Same for some of these stupid AV sound system amplifiers. So many digital circuits and boards. I have a Harmon Kardon AVR740. My own unit, cpu locked up. What a nightmare it is. I almost don''t want to fix it. Well I do, but it is such a nightmare to try to test enything due to the way it is built. There are fuses on the main board soldered in place that the only way to get at them it to remove the digital board, analog board, Tuner board, then remove the heatsink and fans, in order to remove the main board to get to the bottom of the main board because they were too stupid to put a hatch on the bottom for access. Yes they put a cut away small hatch big enough to change the output transistors, but if you need over a few inches from the outputs which is where the fuses and regulators are forget it. Take the entire unit apart. I wasted several hours on this one of mine and got frustrated and put it back together. Dam there were some really stupid designs out there,

I wonder why most CD players play horizontally? Would it be beneficial to the motor to play vertically? I'd like to someday get a good vertically playing unit, if they exist. I have seen them, but can't say it was good quality. Btw, if you can't fix something, nobody can.

It is beneficial to a degree. There were vertical playing players. All of the mega changers are vertical playing units. The advantage of course is dust doesn't collect on the lens. The weight of the disk also does not press on the lower bearing of the soon motor. There are plenty of mega changers still working.

Given the soldering, the chip is original. S1 was only stamped on a chip if it was binned by the supplier (Philips Semiconductors). The CD player factory (Philips Hasselt) might have used their own binning process when they ran out of pre-binned ones, or determined that the quality control of the unbinned ones was good enough to use them and still have the player perform within spec. Strangely, both unmarked and S1 marked ones do carry the Y behind the mask number sometimes, indicating that they were factory tested to somewhat less rigorous standards to increase the yield. Apparently not affecting the ability to meet S1 spec.

Besides asking for double packing, you should insist that shippers use fresh, unused boxes. If parcel is crushed when delivered, try to refuse delivery citing the crushed packaging and loose contents as the reason and for my money, scrunched up news paper is better packing material and cheaper than bubble wrap. Too bad!

My god I’ve seen my share of botched repairs, but I don’t understand why someone would do that to that chip... it takes 2 minutes to lift a chip properly even with budget tools. If that’s what a shop did, with professional tools I understand why you don’t want to accept repairs like this. Although it’d be amazing to get this back working, from experience it’s not worth the hassle because as you say customers will expect you to own the repair for life once you touch anything.

Unfortunately CD players today have gone the same way as VHS, and vinyl sucks balls it always has ive never been a fan, even a cheap cd player will blow the socks off any record player, thats what they were made for in the first place, pipe smoking vinyl hipsters get on my nerves.

Not your problem, advise customer to take legal advice for botched repair by another vendor. Repair will never be 100% and it may never be right. Will not take on this job as it will never be satisfactory. Use for parts.

The phipps is still sitting in the corner. The owner actually contacted me today and I told him again that it may not be repairable but I won't do anything unless i have a service manual. I have left the balm in his court. All o know it he had already sunk hundreds into thos thing and I havent made a dime. He already put a new laser in it and recapped it at the other guys shop and then he washed his hands on it. I am not interested in getting married to it but I am not investing anything. He wants it fixed he will have to buy the manual first and then I will do some bit bashing. I have already changed that bodge chip with all the wires and the da converter chip. It reads but no audio. So I am thinking a timing issue and that requires a manual.

@@12voltvids You have already got yourself entangled in this mess, have you been paid for the time and effort already spent on this? Just asking for a service manual means if he provides one he will expect you to finish the job. If I were you I would tell him to collect the item as you need to make room and it is just in the way collecting dust and you are afraid it might get damaged or lost. If he insists you hold on to it simply tell him he will need to pay you for the work done up to date, Then present him with a hefty bill which he will refuse to pay, you win either way, he can either take it away with him or pay the bill which also has a clearly worded provision. that this unit is badly damaged by previous repairs in another service dept and may never be repaired to his satisfaction. I think he will take the hint.

@@liammckenna3100 This client is a millionaire. Beings me plenty of very high end units to service like that mcintosh dvd player, luxman preamp and fancy AR turntable. I don't chase away the audiophiles because when a nice piece does come in in they generally pay pretty good. Some day I am sure I will get around to spending some time on it. My schedule just changed at my regular job so now I have 3 days a week to spend working on electronics. Once the weather warms up a bit I will be in the shop more. I enjoy the challenge, but without a manual it is tough.

Sir , i watch you vids all the time ,watched 100 or so , but your theses on CD sounding better then Vinyl , is not correct, and its not my voodoo thinking or anything , its Crap in Crap out with CD , because CD can be compressed and it is , while Vinyl can not be compressed so much , its not possible to do it , so having a best Chip in the world is not gonna help it sound good, its compressed Dynamically, there is no Dynamics on CD , while Vinyl is not , that is why Vinyl usually sounds better if we compare same songs . Off course if someone didnt compress CD Master , then CD is better , with that Philips chip or without it , but truth is they are all compressed , so that is why Vinyl wins, its not the technique , its pure fact that Analog Vinyl can not be compressed as much as CD can , to explain to you what compression sounds like so you can hear you CD being crap , its like when you are Shouting , and you voice is constant level all the time without dynamics , that is compression , and that is modern mastering , and that is CD , its impossible to do on Vinyl hence Vinyl songs dont shout = better , short explanation, not all , if someone done CD good , then CD is better but 99% of CD masters are compressed with Waves Ultramaximeser L316 , trust me i do producing for more then a decade , it is like that its called Loudness wars , i dont have money for Vynils but they are better , not in sound quality , but in Mastering , and Mastering matters because then your song is RElistanable , while CD is 1-2 listens and it gets crappy because you dont want to listen to shouting all the time .that is the story , same goes for every other sound carrier , except analog

Stop crying like a baby…. Ok we get it… Person who repaired previously was a rookie. But you are a pro and should be able to unsolder that chip with your hands behind your back!!! From your commentary, it really shows you don’t know what you are talking about…. DAC is TDA1541chip that is sitting untouched. The chip you are talking about is SAA7220 oversampling digital-filter and it’s readily available on eBay. Seriously, you can convert that Philips CD880 to NOS mode (it is trivial) and by doing so…impress your audiophile friend and he will tell all his friends that you a hero… So Stop crying like a baby and man up. Thanks. Cheers

James Williams I know what chip it is. I said it was the digital filter. The fact is behind it. Open your ears and listen. I can't repair it until the owner of it ok's the repair. Obviously it needs a new chip and that is probably all it needs however that won't be known until the chip is sourced and replaced. That is riding on if the owner approves it or not. It is in his hands now. We'll actually it is still in my hands but I am I. Hold until I get the ok. But considering what the last butcher did I fly expect that there may be more issues.
