In this video you see me using the new Sony A9III for the first time and experimenting with the global shutter, which amongst other things, allows you to use flash at faster shutter speeds than have ever been available before.
The A9III is also capable of shooting at 120 frames per second, is completely silent and, thanks to the global shutter, will never have an issue with flicker or banding.
The Sony A9III's global shutter is truly revolutionary, especially if you like to use off camera flash, because as you will see in this video, shooting at shutter speeds such as 1,80000 without the need for high-speed sync opens up a whole new world of potential. The Sony A9III really is a game changer for flash photography.
A huge thank you to Olga for modelling: / olgasolomodel
And to Phil Eagland for kindly loaning me the Sony A9III:

Nice video. Glad you show the flash capabilities of the A9III. I shot more than 40'000 pictures in the past 4 month in sports and concerts and more than 1000 with flash at dance and sports exhibitions. GS is the way to go. I have tested it with Godox V1, Broncolor Satos 3200 and Sony HVL-F60RM2 flashes. With only 60/70 Joule of flash energy of the SONY HVL-F60RM2 or Godox V1, you can shoot more than 20 Pic/s at 1/256, ISO 250, f/1.8 and 1/80000. With the Broncolor Satos 3200, I even shot more than 60 Pic/s in fast action dance and sports. It's just mind blowing. If you want to avoid the flash timing settings for the various shutter speeds, use the SONY HVL-F60RM2. I use 3 of them in both manual und TTL mode and switch on wireless flash. You can also see and control all the flash settings directly on the display or view finder. I know several wedding photographers, that are now using this combo on several tripods.

Thank you very much! The MagMod XL is cool and I use it on my Godox AD400, but the point of this video is that you no longer need the power of the 400 with the global shutter of the A9III as the AD200 is more than enough - so no need for the larger modifiers :)

It's surprising how little there is online regarding the flash use at weddings. Personally what you gain is not worth what I would loose from my A1 so I will not be getting one (I bought my A1 after the release of the A9MKIII). I am looking forward to the new body design being used on future bodies as my A1 feels like a block of wood in the hand.

  • @NeilRedfern

I agree! The fact that the A9III means we no longer need high-speed sync is HUGE. The A1 is an amazing camera too - there is no right or wrong choice between the two, it just depends on what your priorities in a camera are. Either way it is great to see Sony innovating like this and showing us what is possible

@@NeilRedfern I do wish Sony would release a lower end stacked sensor camera thats more inline with the price of a Z8. Same body and AF as the A9MKIII with a stacked sensor and normal shutter with 1/400 flash sync and a 36MP sensor. I think it would outsell both the A9MKIII and A1

If only Sony installed PCIe 4.0 so it can get the new 1800MB/s CFEA cards it might've been even greater.

  • @youuuuuuuuuuutube

    @youuuuuuuuuuutube

    21 күн бұрын

Not sure it would change anything though. Look at benchmarks of the Canon R3, Nikon Z8/Z9, that are using CFEB at 1800MB/s ... and look at the in camera writing speed: you get 420MB/s for the R3, and between 600 and 700MB/s for the Z9. So, having faster cards does not mean that the camera can handle that, and maybe they must be downclocked too due to heat concerns.

@@youuuuuuuuuuutube That's solid info. And for overheating they should make the FX3/30 standard going forward on top alpha cameras.

You stated 1/80000s, but do you mean 1/8000s? I saw you take photographs at 1/16000s but that is the max. Almost no flash can keep up with that shutterspeed at 1/80000s.

@@NeilRedfern The shortest flash duration of AD200 is 1/13000 sec at 1/128 power. At 1/1 power the t 0.1 is 1/300 sec. That means you loose a lot of the light when shooting at 1/80000 sec shutterspeed. You would get all of the t 0.1 flash in the exposure if not using shorter speed than 1 /13000. But you will get more if you can adjust the sync so that the exposure hit the 1/80000 peak of flash light. 🙂
