Sony A7sIII - My Extended Review

Фильм және анимация

I had about 2 months to try out the amazing Sony A7siii, and here are my unbiased, honest thoughts (and lots of footage). I've filmed with Sony mirrorless cameras for almost 10 years now, so this camera is kind of a big deal for me. I had very high expectations, and the a7siii rocked it. Great job Sony! Thank you Kobe for always being there for me.

This is a brilliant review, Brandon. You covered all the bases in a way that a working professional can appreciate. Between you, Gerald and Philip, we have been treated to some amazing content surrounding this camera. I should also mention that I love your filmmaking style. It feels fresh and unique which is no small achievement in this day and age. I recently moved back to smaller cameras after running with big setups for years - RED, FS7, Ursa Mini etc. None of them ever made me feel as happy as the A7SIII does. It just gets out of the way. Total creative freedom. And I think that is what a tool should do - empower the creator.

To be honest, it would be such a relief and load off just to shoot standard profile and have to do minimal coloring. I really liked the HLG profiles on the A7III, so i might go with that unless i REALLY need Slog3. Great review, amazing footage. Thanks.

THIS is the type of review I LOVE. I cannot stand the reviews where people sit in front of cameras and just talk about the tech features, and show me the body of the camera. They literally show me little other than unrealistic autofocus tests. THIS review on the other hand shows me real life practical day to day uses for the camera from a filmmaking point of view. Thank you for also talking about the profile, grading and the lenses you used for each shot. This was video was both informational AND inspirational. Great work Brandon!

It is disgusting that huge youtubers are able to deceive their millions of subscribers by uploading content that was entirely paid for or sponsored and then playing it off as if its an honest review or a product they picked up with their own money. Great Review Brandon, thanks for all the effort going into it!! In regards to the editing performance 7:44 There are 3 Codec Options (XAVC-HS , XAVC-S & XAVC-I) it is a bit of a misconception of a lot of people that these offer different image quality (they might differ slightly in some very fine motion detail like rain or forest leaves). Really these codecs offer different workflow-choices (filesize/editing performance) XAVC-HS is meant to give you small filesize with its efficient compression but the editing performance of it is terrible. XAVC-I will give you great editing performance (similar to ProRes which is an All-Intra Codec aswell) without need for proxies but you'll have really big files (and in scenes with a lot of movement and fine detail the compression could be better). XAVC-S is sort of in the middle: the filesize should be within the other two and the editing performance is not great but allright. So i think you should never choose your framerate depending on the editing performance. It's a creative choice after all and there are plenty of codec options to support your desired workflow.

6:53 beautiful shot. I love a review that shows extensive footage rather than talk about it. That standard profiles looks even better now. The shadow recovery looked great! For documentary work, that could be a great option. The Catalyst software stabilisation deep dive review is pretty exciting. Software stab is where its at, its far superior now..with the GoPro and iPhone as huge examples. Please Sony just integrate it onto FCPX!

Standard profile definitely looks better to my eye than SLog, no matter how you edit it. I find the same thing happens with many cameras. Sometimes those flatter profiles don't necessarily give you more "latitude" as promised, but they're just flatter and softer profile curves. I notice this with the GH5 as well, no matter what approach I take to grading if I shoot their extremely flat Vlog profile I can never quite pull that data back to where the cine-D would have been. Perhaps shooting 12 bit could fix that, but it does beg the question how "flat" of a profile is truly necessary in order to get a good shot. If the standard doesn't look good then there is a good chance it's just not a great shot to begin with.

You need greater skill to deal with log formats. Brandon's not a technical grader or colorist. I'd personally only use it in combination with a technical LUT like Leeming to bring it back to REC 709 and not have to do everything by hand.

@@rsmith02 Yeah absolutely, it takes a lot more effort, time, and skill. Skill of which even if you do possess it still takes a lot of time and value matching to get right, so for a lot of people it's just not worth the effort when a standard natural or flatter profile out of the camera looks so excellent to begin with. Like CineD on the GH5 for example, or natural flat on the Nikons.

Aloha Brandon, I have a question. When you transfer your footage to you Macbook pro does "QuickTime" recognize the files? In other words, it's a bummer when I can't see a thumbnail generated by QT, or be able to just press the spacebar to quickly view my clips whiles on my laptop. There have been times where I had to import then into FCPX just to see what each clip was. Many thanks.
