That's nearly my setup but i took the hotshoe monitor mount from smallrig so i can quickly change between the left grip and the top handle. i also got a second grip for the right side. That feels very stable in the hands and the overall setup is quickly changeable for different uses. Good choice.

Does the record button on the top handle actually work, though? I have that handle on my A7S3, and it almost never works. I also have a smallrig wooden side handle with the record button, it is the same, almost never works. Either Smallrig are selling products that just do not work with Sony, despite advertising them as doing so, or the Sony multi connector port/ software is faulty. I've not heard of anyone yet who has that handle working with the A7S3. I like the handle apart from that. Agree that the cage really needs an arca swis base built in. The top part on the right makes it difficult to turn the mode dialand I wish the dial didn't have the annoying button, which must be pressed before it will turn. I find that the cage around the battery compartment can be uncomfortable on your pinky finger. I put a 70mm nato rail on the top of the cage to mount the handle on so that it could be slid from side to side more to help with balance, the 90mm one might have been even better.

Using the Atomos Ninja V. Can you shoot 4K 120Fps?

Nice.. however the top handle with the record button looks like it may obscure the hot shoe on the camera.. so may have to use the Sony hot shoe extender that comes with the 4 source XLR audio accessory to extend the multi hot shoe to one of the cold shoe mounts to use some of Sony’s digital or XLR mic inputs.

Strange, my top handle HTN2670 record button doesn’t work on the A7SIII

I was considering alternates by Shape (too expensive) and Tiltaling (not available yet and may be a bit bulky) so I purchased the package with side grip, hdmi protector and cage. I skipped the top handle for two reasons: I intend to use XLR-K3M in the camera hot shoe and my Rode Video Mic X in the shoe on top of the side handle when I want stereo recordings which is the only way the two won’t get in each other’s way. I am also hoping I can balance the whole rig, mic’s and all to my Zhiyun Crane 2S, though wish me luck getting things balanced! The other reason why I did not get the top handle is because as I understand it that button can only start and stop video recordings and NOT be able to take pictures with pre/auto focus (I think David was incorrect when he said the top handle button can be used for taking photos). I also kinda regret losing the inlets for the strap but since I am getting a couple of small rig mini plates for my Crane I may wind up may using those to attach my peak design clips/strap to this cage instead (small rig model AAN2366 mini plates come in a set of two). Glad David posted this because I was concerned that the red record button on the Sony may have been obstructed but based on what I saw here, it doesn’t look bad at all. >>>> As always it’s great interacting with David and all his fans. Help please! I just got the a7siii and pairing with the Atomos ninja v. I can't seem to turn off the Log/HDR slider in order to turn on legalise. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Atomos ninja has the latest firmware 10.54

You can’t have a lut active.

David how necessary would you say the nato rails are? ie. If i.got the the cage, wooden handle to fit my ninja v and top handle would that be fine or the nato rails make a big difference?

You don’t need the NATO rails for the side handle if you get the correct handle and top handle.

I am just thinking about a cage my Ninja V on it and a left side handle small rig 2914 with on top of it my mic. But not sure which handle I will buy. There are so many handles lol it’s hard to choose I use the Sony original brand batteries.

@@DavidOastler if you swivel the screen fully out and look at it from the top, you notice that its not perfectly even with the camera but falls a little short ive noticed almost all of the a7siiis have this?

cool. although wont be caging mine so I can always see the articulated screen. gimbal and held held baby!! (and tripod )

1 year on and Smallrig are still selling this handle as working with the A7S3/FX3, despite it not actually working. I've just bought two, this handle and s side handle. Neither work. They did initially then almost never.

This looks nice but I'm waiting for the Tilta cage version with a smaller footprint and design.

You said a73 instead of a7S3 🤣. Im looking to but the exact same set up! Question is that ninja 5 the only monitor that does external recording? Would this be the best monitor for $700-1000 price range? Any advice would be of big help. Ur awsome BTw

i think small rig jipped me.. my sony a7siii small rig doesnt have the rubber on the bottom and also accessing the record button is not that accessible.. u got to almost stick my finger under the cage to press the button. u didint really show the top record button side.. is your kinda blocked by cage..

Great video! Just got mine! I've noticed that HDMI port feels loose and flimsy which is strange. Is it same with your camera or I got a bad copy? Thanx a lot!

Mine is fine as long as I tighten it up fully but it could be a better system I’m just not sure how? To be honest I will probably just use it without it full hdmi leads rarely come out.

Next time when you make a shot sequence of your gear, make sure you wipe it down well so there are no grease marks on the screen, this will make it look more cinematic.

Hello again David my man! I had asked this in one of your streams but you hadn’t known the answer yet. My impression is that the button on the handle can only initiate start/stop for video shooting. So even when in photo mode, it would override and operate video only. Could you confirm this for me? I’ve always had an interest in one of these types of handles with the start/stop button, but if it only works for video, it would be somewhat limiting. I would so love one if it could be used to snap photos too.

Music was a bit over dramatic for a shot of the camera in the kitchen, 😆 🤣 Still loved the video though.
