Does a rig really make you a better filmmaker? I think the better question here is WHEN will a rig make you a better filmmaker because if you don’t use it in the right context, it might actually cost you! In this video I share my reasoning behind how I rig up my camera but also why I sometimes prefer to leave it behind. Every shoot is different and should be considered in its own context. Over the past 12 years I’ve shot a variety of genres and I’ve also made my fair share of mistakes when it comes to gear choices which has led me to a more simplistic approach. To help you avoid some of these mistakes I’ve compiled a check list of 4 things that I reason FOR and AGAINST using a camera rig and I still use this on all my shoots no matter how big or small. #filmmakingrig #cinematic #sonyA7sIII #SonyA7IV #camerarig
Full disclosure, SmallRig didn’t pay me to make this video, I simply love their gear and I’ve been using it long before they reached out to me. They were kind enough to send me some accessories but have no say in the final outcome and the views reflected here are 100% mine.

As someone trying to establish a video business, it's pretty easy to tell who the working professionals are (like you, and a small group of other youtubers) and who the unboxers/gear-reviewers/system-switchers are. Thank you for content like this. It's so much more useful than the click-bait crap most are putting out there. Keep it up man.

No cap though, I’ve seen that the gear people associate with high quality gets you clients. Example is a 70-200… typically they’re white and you see it on expensive big telephoto lenses and it’s instantly more “professional”

Very good points, that’s why I built my rig so I can quickly switch between full rig and base rig on gimbal. I keep a half-cage + Nucleus Nano motor + baseplate + mattebox on even on the gimbal. Love your videos! Thank you so much for sharing all the valuable information and showcasing how you actually apply yourself all the knowledge. A quick question: I am really hesitating about purchasing a monitor (for wedding and family shooting, so I need to be quick and adjust to the changing environment). My main concerns would be: - controlling the exposure on the s-log3 - seing better (not on a small back screen of the camera) - probably helping the stabilization by adding the weight How would you suggest taking a decision? Do you think for this type of shooting the screen is really needed?

Nice video! But in debating both sides I think there's a third option, which bears mentioning, which is to have two camera bodies. I was at Orms yesterday debating this very choice, is it worth it or just more gear which needs looking after? Like having a 16-35 on the gimbal for B-roll and handheld in a "A" rig with Mic etc. One can always remove the camera from the gimbal fairly quickly if needed. Yes budget is the "stopper" for most people. And security. Like where does the gimbal go when not being used? An assistant is almost mandatory. In Cape Town we have major issues with guys stealing our gear on site, like with the recent Nelson M Day crime spree. Tough to decide between "pro" and heavy and obvious, or light and fast...and safer! Hmmm

Thanks, some good points to help a newbie like me so I just subscribed. I can see many pros/cons. Perhaps using a QR clamp to assist switching between rig and gimbal may help. But when travelling or not wishing to attract undue attention I can see how a basic body without rig helps - esp if just using a small prime too. Maybe there is merit in using a monopod to add a degree of fast working stability along with a gimbal?

A good solution for a Cage and Gimbal setup is the following (at least to me): I use the EOS R6 with a SmallRig Cage that has NATO Rails. It's super fast to detach the handle and the R6 with cage and a 24-105mm fits onto an DJI RSC2. 👌🏼 Initial balancing needs a bit of patience but that's okay.

Thanks Fabian, I never turn IBIS off, never :) The only time I make a change with IBIS is when I switch Active Steady ON or OFF for example, Active Steady is not on when I'm on the Gimbal but for normal handheld I prefer it ON with IBIS.

  • @fabianbetto

@@jacques_crafford Thanks alot Jacques. So on the Gimbal you just choose Steady/Shot Standard and not OFF. I think this also works for Tripod work with a Fluid Head. No need to turn the IBIS off.
