    Nice camera, but you can't use 10 bit modes if you're editing with the free edition of Davinci Resolve. Even w/ 8 bit modes in DR, I'm getting some slight lag when color grading - not enough to bother me, but just enough to make me wonder for 1-2 seconds whether the software crashed. Of course that means I'm not currently able to use the 10 bit modes, not until I get the paid Studio version of DR. Also, keep in mind I've heard the xavc-s and Intra codecs by Sony can be finicky on any editing system due to the amount of decoding/decompression the processors have to do. Strange that no one is talking about that. But when I posted on a Davinci Resolve FB page about my technical problems, someone did mention the xavc codec being problematic. I will say my test video in 8 bit mode s-log3 was fantastic. I can only imagine how it'll be when I'm able to use the 10 bit modes. Lastly, the menu system is a beast. There are so many things to tweak that I took 3 days just getting familiar w/ the system.

    That ISO thing is really interesting. I do a lot of videos in skating arenas where typically I'm at F5.6 SS 60 and ISO 3200 (on my fuji) I'm wondering if with the a7SIII I'd go: F5.6, SS 60, ISO 12,800 (and throw on an ND filter) ..and I'd get less noise. Can't wait to try it. :-)

    I've been on the fence with the fx3 and a7siii, honestly just because of the audio interface. Using it on the fx3 with my 416 just sounds amazing. However, that top handle is an awful experience. • @learningcameras

    Yeah, I wasn't a fan of the way Sony did the top handle for the FX3. But the XLR adapter for the SIII is a bit more versatile although I do wish the entire shotgun mic assembly could be removed. But adding that to the S3 helps a ton! Thanks

    Great video as always. Interesting you prefer S-I mode. Some other reviewers prefer the H265 mode. I read an article that said H265 was very close to Prores 444 but 1% of the size. S-I mode has much higher bit rate than H265 but H265 uses a very clever compression algorithm that some argue packs in more detail than S-I. Have not been able to test it myself as I have not been able to upgrade from a Sony A7 III as yet...

  • @paulfairchild8942

    @@mirrorlessny Yes, h265 will be tougher on most editing systems due to its complex algorithms. But it will be very high quality and have smaller file sizes. xavc s-i will be light on editing systems (i.e. easy for them to process) but the file sizes will be MUCH larger, and the quality maybe slightly less than h265 - but the quality difference will likely be tough to spot for most.

    Thanks for a great video. One question, though. At 3:48 -- Doesn't the FX6 output raw just like the A7s3? Or are you just saying the FX6 (unlike the C200 or whatever) doesn't record raw internally? Either way, it sounds like you're saying the A7siii can do something with raw output that the FX6 can't. Might want to clarify (or feel free to correct me if I'm off my rocker here).

  • @learningcameras

    @learningcameras

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hey! So I didn't clarify that point well. The FX6 can output raw but not over hdmi for whatever reason. It requires SDI and a $1200+ large recorder while the SIII can do it easily over the full size hdmi port to the Ninja V monitor for $600. Probably should have expanded more that I was saying it doesn't do it over hdmi. I've got the FX6 in now though! I'll be shooting a video on it on Thursday so hit me up if you have any questions!

  • @learningcameras

    Yes, the camera has a dual gain sensor can switch circuits at different ISO's to provide lower noise. On the S3 in slog, the dual gain is 800 ISO and 12,800 ISO so those are the two lowest noise settings. Anything above 1600 ISO is actually noisier than 12,800 ISO since there is a significant drop in noise at 12,800 ISO.

    I love my A7S III for sure but I don't agree with down playing the FX6, yes the XLR adapter does put it on par with the FX6 especially since its also on the handle and if you strip it down you lose the XLR, but FX6 DOES do RAW output as well through SDI to the Shogun 7 and you can not beat Sony's E-VND system. Sony has also said it is dual ISO but they don't officially call it dual ISO because you lose DR on the circuit switch. So to them because you lose DR they don't consider it true dual ISO.

  • @learningcameras

    @learningcameras

    3 жыл бұрын

    So with the shogun 7 and sdi required for raw output, that really sets the FX6 WAY above the price of an A7SIII even fully rigged. It also can't do 4k120 without S&Q and If I remember correctly most lower bitrate options are 8 bit only. I'm just surprised that thr A7SIII is sooo good it actually seems better to me than the FX6 in quite a few areas

    A7SIII GLITCH: FREEZE DURING RECORDING?? I used an a7siii rental for a wedding then. I used a different a7siii rental again this past weekend with the same glitch preset. I CANNOT BE THE ONLY ONE running into this. Camera freezes during recording and becomes unresponsive. Only taking the battery out and putting it back in resets the camera to begin filming again. Otherwise the screen is black if you just turn it off and on. Why aren't more users reporting this? This is clearly a widespread issue if two different camera bodies share the same glitch. It's only a matter of time before the camera glitches while trying to record a moment that cannot be staged again. What the heck is going on??

But I do make a living off my camera so it’s never just a blind purchase. As I find ways to give away Sony ex1”s and Fs700’s I know if buying a camera it has to be a brick house as it’s my paycheck. And yes the debate in my head is fierce at this moment. Partially because the delayed release I’m sure, but also the reviews granted not truly hands on w production model seem to lean a7s3.
