Sony a7R V vs Canon R5 vs Sony a7R IV: Best high-resolution camera!

Chelsea & Tony Northrup review the new Sony a7R V, a 61-megapixel full-frame mirrorless camera. It has A LOT in common with its high-resolution predecessor, the Sony a7R IV. They have exactly the same sensor, so all aspects of image quality (such as dynamic range, rolling shutter, high ISO performance) are the same. However, PixelShift is MUCH more useful now, and you can use the Sony a7RV to create 240-megapixel pictures even when leaves, people or animals move through the frame!
Other improvements include 4k/60 video and 8k/24 video (both with a slight crop). Finally, an a7R camera has GREAT video autofocus!
The biggest improvement is the introduction of Sony's AI autofocus system, which detects a wide variety of subjects including human eyes, animal eyes, bird eyes, cars, planes, and trains. It works AMAZING. We test all those autofocus methods pretty intensely.

I have a9, a7riv and a1. The af on a7riv is the most unreliable af I have used even compared to my older Nikon DSLR bodies. I'm glad you pointed this out as it has been a major fail on this hi-res line. The a1 is definitely worth the extra $ and the problems with the a7r5 focusing make it a much better buy for pros.
I really enjoyed this video. The information was useful and well-selected, and I adored the lighthearted vibe. I think it's a great choice to remind viewers that everything is awesome these days camera-wise, and we should just have fun and enjoy these devices regardless of brand. Loved it! 🤓💜

The improved image stabilization is far and away the most important feature for me. Claimed 8-stops versus 5.5. As a mountaineer and stills photographer who hand-holds in low light for landscape, this is a huge improvement over the a7r4. Would love it if you did the comparison in a follow-up review video.

I came hoping for a Tony signature "sharp shots below the reciprocal rule" graph, especially compared to the R5 that he praised for hand-hold-ability. I've been in search of a full frame IBIS system to compete with the IBIS experience of my 2015 Olympus m43 camera; Canon sounds like it's getting close, but after shooting Sony for 5 years I'd love to see them catch up and not have to switch...

I'd be amazed if its anywhere near 8 stops. That would mean that a shot taken with a shutter speed of 5 seconds with IBIS on will be exhibit no more motion blur than one taken at 1/50th of a second with IBIS off.

That first shot I could tell the autofocus is a million times better. I spend a lot of time in the a7riv viewfinder, I could literally feel the improvement. Sick

I personally don’t buy a camera to brag about it being the « current best one ». I buy a camera to take pictures :) The new camera doesn’t make your « now old » camera perform any less good than when you bought it. Your camera still performs exactly the same. After just going to my first air show this past weekend, I'm finding a lot of my pictures to be out of focus. I'm was using the R and R7 with the R7 out performing the R by a long shot. However, lots of pics still weren't in focus as much as I would like. This Sony with airplane tracking would be pretty handy! But I'm quite invested in Canon gear and lenses and don't want to change. I hope Canon gets on the ball and has aviation tracking soon!
Thank you again Tony and Chelsea for another great review.

Thank you for this comparison video. I think I will save up and wait for the.... A1-II since I would like to have the 1/400 flash sync speed, fast silent shutter when needed, crazy accurate autofocus, 50MP plus the A7RIV's tilty screen and subject recognitions.
I love how you two interact when making your KZread videos. Educational and fun to watch. Progressing through your KZread careers you have added an edginess that only makes it that much better. I have to say that I am still drawn toward the Canon R5. 2 years old and it still rocks the competition. Sony, however, is definitely neck and neck. As always, keep up the good work and keep'em flying. Drones, I mean drones....😉
Really helpful video. Loved the comparo of your dog Sandy as a pup and at 17. Very clever. The Canon R5 is a monster and still holding its own. Just wish these mirrorless icons were even smaller, rivaling compact FF.
Hi Tony and Chelsea Great video, thank you so much! Despite its limitations, I was surprised that the A7Rv does not seem to nail the focus more often for BIF. Did you try several adjustment options in the menu and despite this, the results in the video were the "best" results? Also, I wonder whether the camera learns while being used or "learning" will be implanted via firmware upgrades. Many thanks! Samuel

Hi. Thanks for the review. Interesting. My question, do you think Sony will update the a7r4 firmware with newer features in the r5? Also, will you please consider reviewing the r5 against the a1.
Enjoying my life as requested. Best sign-off - you should ALWAYS use it! Great vid, as usual. As a Nikon shooter, it is interesting seeing what the other players are putting out there ...also it is more convincing than ever that I have absolutely no need to make any change in the kit whatsoever. Haha. If anything, I need to get better at using the tool I have in my hands and - I think I probably won't be changing it for another 5-7 years. Thanks, as always.
My question in the beginning of the video was how does the a7rV compare to the a1. You answered my question! Thank you
Thanks for that comparison! Love my 2x Canon R5, but Sony is also doing a damn good job! Such great tools.

My achey shakey hands can overcome any stabilization.
Thank you for the comprehensive review. My question about the a7R V.....is the start up time for the camera turning on, and waking up from sleep, is it faster? I found the a7R IV to be glacial and I have missed shots waiting for it to wake up. Also, does the V have that "cannot access menus" while it is processing/storing photos on the memory card? And last question, the low light autofocus is improved in the V (good), but did you mention how is high ISO performance? For shooting an event, I found ISO 5000 about the highest minimally acceptable for the IV. Thanks!
First, thank you for the video. I own a Alpha 1 but I was thinking of replacing my A7RIV and A7IV to pair it with the new A7RV. Do you see any downside to this? I do also own a Canon EOS R5 because of the need to shoot in both systems. If I sell the A7RIV and A7IV the new camera cost is covered but is there a better way to spend the $3900?
I was interested in the a7r line back when the mark III was about to hit. I was looking to upgrade from an a65 at the time. I never did pull the trigger. I chose an a99ii instead to keep with the SLTs. I love the camera, but I kind of wished I chose full mirrorless. Because I am a hybrid shooter, so high MPs appeal to me as well as great video color depth. I'm surprised that the 10-bit 4.2.2. is not mentioned more in the reviews! I think I want to finally make the jump to mirrorless this because I am sold on the 10-bit video. The A1 checks the box too, but the price demands too much justification.

You can also keep using your old glass for stills and even get eye tracking with the LA-EA5 adaptor, at least with the iv. Hopefully they will continue to support it with the V.
Love these camera video reviews.👍😊
So would I be better off saving my money and just get an A1 ? For all photography and all video needs ? I’m into portrait, insect and landscape photography but I also love shooting videos. Thanks
Many thanks for this! If I want good low light focussing, but want to be able to used third-party lenses, is there any good option now?
Would u please compare the low light noise performance between A7R5's 26mp lossless compressed raw and A7iii's raw? I think this is a critical point that could change the upgrade decision for an existing A7iii owner.
I was having the same problem with the focusing UNTIL I adjusted the stickiness in the menu. Now it's a beast!
A7R4 has been my daily driver for the last couple years will be interesting to see how the 5 compares!
Question: For your BIF test where you noted tracking was fast but AF was not reliable, did you have the camera in focus priority, balanced, or shutter priority?
Merry Christmas Chelsea & Tony, question: I’m considering between the a1 and r5. I shoot portrait and wedding. What would you say would be the better camera
Great video. Thanks for sharing. I have a Nikon D850 now and shoot landscape and nightscage. Did I hear you wright when you said Adobe will not take Raw taken with the Sony A7R V? So, you can't use Lightroom and Photoshop with the Sony A7RV if you shoot in Raw? Also, 3 years ago you put out a video on Nikon may be having financial problems. How are they doing now?Thank you.

I have a question, what camera is better for landscape, portraits and night photography. the Sony a7R V or Nikon d850 ?
If you want to truly test the autofocus, shoot with a light front fill against a bright backlit window, which I do in at least half my sessions. My A7Riv focuses extremely well on eye focus, right up until I shoot against a lot of soft backlight pouring into the lens which really confuses the autofocus. Then I have to give up and use medium point focus and choose hair, or something else in the same focal plane as the eye, because it’s not going to catch the eye in that situation. If the A7Rv could do that, I’d upgrade tomorrow. But shooting with only front light is a good test but not definitive.
Hi Tony, can you make a video with Chelsea about camera bodies you recommend for wedding photography, and prices. Thank you for the reviews you do❤️🧐🤖

I wish you guys can do a side by side comparison between the A7RV and the A1
Thank you Chelsea & Tony, I was looking for a straight answer on wildlife from someone who actually shoots wildlife WRT a1 vs a7RV. Going to pick up my A1.
Hi, I'm curious, which of the two cameras, between the sony a1 and a7R V has the most photos in focus (at the same burst speed) when a subject quickly walks towards or away from the camera. I have already seen more than 10 reviews, but no one has done this test yet. It would be fantastic to seen this. I think maybe the most interesting test...
I wonder a little bit. How long are you talking about rolling shutter or how many fps you really can capture in continuous shooting with a camera now? Or about stacked sensors? It seems the A7 IV and the A7R IV don‘t look good at these things. Maybe the chip shortage is a bigger problem for Sony than we thought. Yes, the autofocus is great and the cameras are too. But there is no progress in rolling shutter and continuous shooting. Or am I wrong?
Please provide a menu deep dive for the rv similar to what you've done for the riii and riv...so very, very helpful...thank you so much!
You gusy are a riot! I'm glad I watched this as I was possibly upgrading to either R5 or a7R IV or V...
Thank you TOny and Chelsea for another great Review.. :-) So in effect.. the A7 RV still has the same poor low light performance of the A7 RIV? barely being able to go above 800 ISO without noise? to me..that is a deal killer. The Canon R5 is far superior ? in higher ISOs? I'd love your thoughts. Thanks again.

Nikon Z8? When this comes out in March will these be the cameras you compare it too? Using a Df now and feel it’s time to for a new system.
What a great review. Thank you!
Can the A7r5 mounted on a tripod be used to shoot portraits using the pixel shift technology? How would this compare to the same image shot using the GFX 100s in single shot. Lastly, how many seconds does the A7r5 need to take 16 exposures? Thanks-
Super great report/video right there!! As to the camera: no, the jello-effect and the lower FPS,… I’ll wait for the A1-mark 2 before adding another camera to complement my A1.
You were using different focus modes between the A7R IV and V. Why did you do that? You had autofocus tracking enabled on the V, but not on the IV.
I appreciate that you are (1) into wildlife and (2) prepared to call it exactly as you experience it -- thanks!
Thanks for the review. I own a Sony A7r iii so it definitely seems time to upgrade. I shall also be sure to enjoy my life 😜
Chelsea and Tony, love your work! I recently bought the A7rv with a new grip and found that the grip did not fit and later found out that that is an issue with the current grip sold and said to fit as per the Sony Corporate, but I can tell you that after taking it back to Precision Camera in Austin Texas I was told that I was among numerous a7rv owners advising that the battery grip fitment was off. I had a gap that I was able to see through. Was wondering if you had the same issue if and when you tried a battery grip with your camera. There is a big thread on DP Review regarding this issue. Hope it gets fixed soon and maybe you could contact some of your Sony rep's and see what's up with this issue. Keep up the good work. Thank You
Does the A7RV have a dust problem like the A7RIV or has the A7RIVA have improved?
How is the stabilization doing? This is one of the shortest point comparing with Canon. And burst mode is also slower than EOS-R5?
Great comparison. Thank you!
Hopefully the a9iii will have a ~30MP sensor with 6K60p internal (RAW) recording and oversampled 4K60/120p with full sensor readout.
You complained about focus hunting with insects, etc. Did you ignore the full time dynamic focus option to give the process a jump start?
Love the review! Think you did a great job.. just wish at 21:41 the b-roll of the camera was obviously fine from your phone and just stuck out compared to the quality of the rest of the video.. other than that the entire video was great, thank you!

They are different products, this is a direct upgrade to the a7R IV, the non R version aims for different usage, but regards to the new AI Focus system, with better prediction, tracking and subject recognition, this is the next step into the Sony Focusing system, and the improved IBIS . If you care for those specs then yes, it is an upgrade. But if you are interested in the non R cameras lineup, I suggest to wait for the A7 V which should come with the same improvements.

I'm a lifelong Nikon user with no particular brand loyalty in mind as I consider a move to mirrorless. I'm still using a D750, and I've been waiting for the right time to shift to mirrorless. I'd like some decent video performance, but stills are my primary concern. I do a lot of low-light and night photography, some sports, and on-location portraits with studio lighting. I'm considering the a7R V, Nikon Z7 II and the upcoming Z8. So, my question to the hive mind: brand loyalty aside, do you have a compelling reason to choose one of these over another? Or perhaps another body altogether?
Great content and much appreciated. Also: hilarious you two. Here's a question for all: coming off a Canon T5 with a the kit 18-55, a prime 24, and a 70-300mm IS. I was originally thinking it'd be nice to save the zoom lens so maybe a Canon R6, but I recently went in and shot a Sony 7III and that e-shutter is crazy. Now I'm kind of leaning towards the A9 with that stacked sensor. In the past, with my current gear, I've been predominantly landscapes with the occasional bird and action photo, but have been really held back with the old T5 buffer (about 7 raw and then black screen lol). I am trying to go pro where primarily most of my shots are going to be of people in action and more wildlife. Do you think I'll out grow the 7 series. Would you sell prints of landscape off an A9? Great video - couple of questions on the A7rv compared to the others - dynamic range and rolling shutter comparison? Also my 2 cents on the A7riv for wildlife. I think you are not being fair on the A7riv as a wildlife camera. I shot most days for about 6 months with a Sony 600F4 for wildlife and the A7riv - I found that autofocus was adequate for birds in flight. Not all shots were keepers but some were - especially the first couple in a burst. You couldn't just point and shoot the camera, you had to point, wait for the camera to acquire focus in the screen and then shoot. The Sony A7riv just couldn't keep up with the tracking if you had a burst longer than a second or so. Perched or slow moving subjects were not a problem except in very low light. Mark Smith whose videos I watch and is a far more experienced photographer than me seemed to rate the A7riv as a wildlife camera too. I have used an A1 for the last 7 months and it only cost me £700 more new than the price of an A7rv. Why anyone would buy an A7rv at that price I just don't understand.

Same sensor as a7R IV so check the pinned comment.
I honestly can't take this video seriously. To claim that the A7R IV's autofocus is unusable in low light is outright bull$h!t. If you are shooting in such low light that it won't focus, then your images will be $hit because there will be little to no available light. In normal, real-world use, it focuses just fine. In fact, it focuses much better than most all other full-frame cameras that were around just a few years before it's launch...and somehow those were pretty good in weddings and low light situations back in their day. If you are having trouble using an A7R IV in weddings, then you need to go take some photography lessons. It's YOU, not the camera.

They seem fairly future-proof unless there is something very niche about the photographic projects the photographer does and one brand may pull off a trick better or more successfully than another. The cutting edge developments seem to have great real-world possibilities. We will see what photographers are able to bring to their work with tools like these, have we reached a point where the tools start to show the limitations in the image makers? Will photographers never be able to mess up on an assignment.
