I use the a7iv professionally and the only thing that has me thinking about upgrading is the a7v’s improved heat dissipation and AF performance. If you don’t need top tier AF or extended 4k record times I think you’d love the a7iv. It’s an incredible camera.

As a longtime professional photojournalist , after 40+ years using the best pro gear from Nikon, Canon, Leica, I moved over to Sony mirrorless back in January 2017. I have owned and used for photographing all subjects around the world in stills and video, the A6500, A7RII, A7RIII, A7III, A9, A7RIV and currently the A7RV, A1, A7SIII. I just took advantage of Sony $400 USD rebate and Sony $500 USD trade-in bonus to get $900 off the price of a new A7RV, plus what I got for trading in my A7RIV, so it was the perfect time to upgrade at least cost. The advancements of the A7RV are very compelling, and after shooting with my 50mp A1, and my 61mp A7RIV, I would not be willing to lose that ultimate resolution and detail that I love, by dropping down to the excellent 33mp A7IV. Just not for me, but the A7IV is perfect for many. I currently have 14 E-mount lenses covering 10mm to600mm from Sony, Sigma, Tamron, Viltrox so I am covered for all the different subjects I shoot. I am also a longtime Professor of Photography at a USA state university and love teaching my hundreds of students over the years with my courses in Photojournalism, Digital Photography, and 35mm B&W Film photography. .Cheers and thanks for your excellent video. I took advantage of the same deal as you. I briefly thought about trading in my a7IV but ended up keeping it and trading something else which got me a little over $1000 off the rV. I like both cameras but the rV will be my studio camera and I will use the IV for everything else.

I had the same experience regarding lowlight photography. It is my main field of photography. Theatre/dance and musicphotograpy often in poor lit rehearsal rooms. I use the Sony A74 for two years now and very satisfied with its very-lowlight performance. I could try the Sony A7R5 for a couple of days and it is indeed a very nice camera in daylight. But in very lowlight situations it is noisy with a greenish colorcast and above all the autofocus is bad. In focusing and the speed of focussing. Sometimes it did not autofocus at all while my SonyA74 focussed precise and very fast in those circumstances. Waiting for a Sony camera with good AI autofocus in poor lighting conditions.

The Sony A7R V is perfect, even though I'm not a pro or creator. I'm just a visual quality enthusiast who enjoys the slight differences. Price doesn't matter when I print memories for family and friends.

Great video, exactly the choice of cameras I'll be choosing between in the next couple of months. Do you still have both cameras? I would love to see your take on that if you shoot photos in mRAW on the A7RV, that the low light performance goes close to the A7IV. I've seen a couple of reviews mention it, but would love to see your results.

The fact that these camera's need to be compared shows how good the A7RV is. The A7RV is a hybrid camera that leans HEAVILY towards the photography side. It is not designed to beat the A7IV in video, but you can see it holding its own here pretty well. Put the camera's side by side on a photography heavy review and you'll start to see how much better the RV is. Better in low light, better IBIS (its insanely good), much better cropping power, ridiculous resolution, incredible colors out of a Sony finally.

Great comparison! They're really solid hybrid workhorses (I own both), and I would say equally highly underrated for video. It's surprising how well the a7 IV's 7K-downsampled 4K compares to the 8K in the a7R V.

A7iv is basically 8k with its down sample so not surprising

I got a7 IV less than a month ago and coupled with 24mm F2.8 G and 40mm F2.5 G, just ideal!

Great job on the video Mark! Thanks for making it. I had a chance recently to buy the A7RV for a scorching deal, but passed on it just because I didn't want to carry around that much value on the daily. The A7IV is a great camera and I would love to have it, but I'm still not convinced that a full-frame is the right answer for me. I find that the times that I want to set up for dedicated stills photography I usually have the added requirement of increased mobility, and my a6400 suits that need just fine. MAYBE someday I'll upgrade to an a6700 for that purpose, but until then, I'd rather spend my money on an fx30 for video, and that new 70-200G lens.

there's a lot more bang for buck with the fx30 and it's a very easy to use camera. The a7rv is great, but there are better cameras for the price for video only like the FX3 (unless you need 8K)

Thanks for the review! I love my a7 iv, and judging by what I read plus what you showed, it seems that a7r v is a better outdoor camera, but a7iv is better indoors. So perhaps whether a7r v is worth it is not just about your budget, but also about the use cases. Even if you can afford a7r v, but if you mostly shoot photos indoors and 4k video, then a7iv is what you should buy anyhow.

Great video Mark! I've got the chance to Sony's cameras at half price at my job and I can't decide. I've had an a6400 for 2 years and I really think the A7R V is too much for me, but the AF on cars and insects are very appealing! 😍

It's amazing the ZV-E1 has the same AI chip, no crop in 4k60, 4K120 and no rolling shutter issues - some key advantages over the A7R5 for videographers at £1.7k, incredible!

A7RV screen is big thing! If you are behind the camera, you can use flippy screen and I love it! And 4k60dps 1,2x crop is really good, I can use 11mm crop lens for video and get really wide slow motion.

@@kanaheiusagi the ZV-E1 has this mode where it automatically detects the exact fraction of a second you need in your shutter to remove light flicker in video.

Bought the A7RV when it first came out, but sold it just a few months later and went back to my A7iv. For stills, it’s an amazing camera, but for my hybrid use case, the A7iv was way more practical. Fun comparison!

That's heresy. I have the A74 and it is an OK camera, nothing great. I feel my A7R3 is a better camera, more solid, better sensor, great grip. Only thing is the lack of a flippy screen. That A7R5 is far superior to the R4. I can't believe you would sell and lose a ton of money for a lesser camera. I hope you are not listening too seriously to these influencers to make such a horrible decision. Many are out of their mind and too much into themselves to rely for good info. You want the best camera? Get a Nikon, OK? A Nikon F2A made in 1979. You will become a photographer.

@@BryanMiraflor I'm a photographer from 1972 on. Joined the Air Force and bought my Nikon F2A while stationed in Japan. Best camera ever made, bar none. It is simply superior. But, I've notice people playing game of buying a camera then trading it in for another from a different make thinking it is going to improve their photography. I see the KZread influencers leading them astray as to which is best while not considering what is best for the user. The money lost by doing this is astounding. BTW I am using a Sony A7R3, my new best friend. Another superior camera.

@@bondgabebond4907 I bought it open box from my local camera store so I didn't lose much $$. It was overkill for what I used it for. Not sure how to describe it, but in many real world situations, it was slower to use and full of features that I didn't care about. I posted a video on my YT channel about the A7RV that goes into more detail between the two.

Is the 1080 on A7RV at least as good as A7iV? I want to do slow motion wildlife video plus photos. I crop heavily, so the extra megapixels is attractive.

Found the A7Rv for 1155 OMR ($3,003 USD) and the A7iv for 805 OMR ($2,093 USD) so going for the A7Rv. Bother are great cameras, but already have the A7SIII and need a photography monster and potentially a great B-Cam (that 8K can come in handy). Also if you wanna keep the same framing yet gain back your full frame on A7iv try a speedbooster then keep it in APS-C mode + gain more light.

Hi, I have the Sony A7RV. When I use the sensor cleaning function (dust) and run the command, the sensor does not vibrate like in the Sony A7IV, but remains still and only a slight tick tick is heard. People told me that it is normal of this sensor do not vibrate why Sony A7RV uses new generation ultrasound. This is true ?

I do try where I can. I have the Panasonic S5iix (I did the S5ii) and I’ve done some of the canons and nikon z30 and some Fuji. I do want to do more, but it’s hard to review everything and some of the other camera companies aren’t as easy to talk to as Sony - so I’m limited at times. I actually own most of the Sony’s I review - so that makes it easier too 🤣

If I had to chose, I’d go with the A7RV because it lacks the details ruining AA filter.

I had the Sony A7S III and got the Sony A7 RV now as I wanted a camera that will do both Video & Photos, I thought about the A7 IV but I got swayed by the 61 megapixel which I am sure I don't need LOL. Since most of my work is Podcasting not sure if I made a mistake being that video is the majority of my work. I thought about keeping my SIII as well as the A7RV but thought it may be a bit much.

you won’t notice much difference in everyday shooting image quality between the two. athe A7RV is a better camera for those who need high megapixels and 8K. But the A7IV will likely do everything you want at a much better price

I have the A1 and A7 IV. Most of my work is output in post to 6000x4000 pixels (24mp), because that’s what my clients want. 33mp is plenty, even with a bit of cropping. I use the extra resolution for my personal stuff and always travel with the A1. It is the best hybrid camera of them all (if you can afford one).

am i seeing things? does a7rv has a wider field of view

I don't know what to buy for astrophotography and landscapes, I read that the a7iv is better in low light, lower ISO, and the 7 R IV eats stars, but more Megapixels will be better for landscapes, and I actually don't know which one to choose

it’s a tough call for sure. Going into crop mode and still having 26 megapixels is great with the A7RV, but the A7iv is such a great value.

I don't think you mentioned the focus stacking feature on the a7rV? Unless I missed it? 😊

You’re right, the a7rv does have focus bracketing, and I should have had it in the vid. You still have to stack the photos in post, but it’s nice that you do have to change the focus point yourself

Simple video comparison: 24/25P: R5 amazing 8k but rolling shutter, weaker full frame 4k (binned), a7IV better 4k 24/25 full frame (oversampled 7k), R5 better at S35 4K 60p: r5 less crop 1.2 a7iv more crop 1.5 but sharper

if someone is paying you - A7iv so you can have two card slots. Also, the A7iv is a bit better for photos. if it’s more video and for personal use - a7cii

The iso part is a mess. I don't think there is any difference in iso up to 6400 or even 12000. Already if you use 32,000 iso, that image or video can be thrown away. You can't do anything with it, except film the dog in the yard at night and keep it for yourself. But as long as it's quality, somewhere up to 6400 there is no difference. Better AF and 61 MP, that's what matters.

Yes, they do, I have both but when you pick up the R5, the EVF is amazing. The flippy screen and the amazing sticky focus and "crop-ability" set them apart. A7IV is still great though. I was lucky to get a brilliant trade-in for my old A7C. 👌
