SONY a7CII: My Top 6 Reasons Why You Might Want to Buy One + My Favorite Lenses Too by PM-R

I fell in love with the original Sony a7C so when the pair of new cameras came out, I knew I'd be buying two of the a7CII models. When you have a camera with a 32mp file size, that works great in low light, has 10 bit 4:2:2 video, 7 stops of IBIS, shoots stills at 10 fps, and weighs in at just one pound... (1.1 is half of of the Nikon Z8) I knew it was a special camera.

I have a family of Sigma I-Series f/2 lenses I plan to use with it that I got for the A7C that I’m very happy with. Also plan to try and use some of my Zeiss Batis lenses with it even though the are a little large but not really heavy. What about for wildlife? If im going to get the sony 200-600, should i buy the a7cii, a7iv, a6700 for the reach of the crop sensor or maybe the a7riv for the cropping power? How is the autofocus compared to each other, and do you think 33 megapixels is enough for the heavy cropping that happens in wildlife photography? Also the 200-600 vs the 100-400 gm for wildlife? I could get a high megapixel body like the a7riv or get the a6700 to get the 600 ff equiv Theres so many possible combos, and I just dont know which one would be best (I want to do primarily wildlife and birds, but a little bit of everything) It would be great to have your input. 😊

  • @PMRTV

    @PMRTV

    5 ай бұрын

    Before I say anything, it needs to be said that I own two a1 bodies that I use for sports. When I need a larger file, I reach for those. But 33mp is still a big file. I use my A7CII all the time in crop mode (1.5X) and then commonly crop the image from there. I have no issue with doing this. The AF system is excellent in the A7CII, A7CR, A7IV, and A7RV but none of them will hold a cnadle to the low light AF and fast acquire of the a9, a9II, and a1. So if you shoot a lot of birds in flight, you are better off having one of these and having most of your images be tack sharp with a smaller file (a9/a9II) than having massive files that are out of focus. "wildlife photography" covers a lot of ground... if you are shooting animals and birds running and flying, respectively, then the a1 is likely your best solution.

  • @ICyfish

I forgot to mention that i also want it to be an all purpose camera, that I can use for everything like travel, but i will predominatly use for wildlife. Then what do you think would be the best option out of the a7cii, a6700, a7iv, and a7riv? I usually dont shoot fast action and birds in flight, but would the a7riv, a7cii, a7iv, and a6700 work in those situations?

    MAN, I don't think so. Shooting full frame in 4k with 4:2:2 is the bomb... It's an editor's dream, those clips--so easy to color grade and work with. I agree it's a great camera but it's a half pound heavier and the AF is no match for the Sony. S-Cinetone alone is worth the price of admission.

    @@PMRTV I read the Sony overheats in long form video sessions due to no internal fan. It's not a FX3 replacement despite using the same sensor. Pretty sure the Panasonic records in 4:2:2 at 4k as well, it even has open gate 6.2k at 30 fps and the ability to output in Blackmagic RAW which is great since I use DaVinci Resolve Studio.

    Why ? It crops in 4K@60fps. The camera is good but it crops horribly in 4K@60. I don't get it. Seems that SONY has trouble making cameras that don't crop 1.5x in 4K@60. I don't get it. I have the A7CR and its miles better than the A7CII.

    What is one megapixels these days, but the Sony A7CII do have 33 megapixels. 514 g (1.13 lb / 18.13 oz). For me the issues with the Sony A7CII is the small EVF with low resolution, the lack of a joystick and the fully articulating back screen which makes the camera thicker. But I do like the compact design with the EVF in the upper corner. I have four compact prime Lenses, the Zeiss Loxia Distagon 21mm 2.8, the Sony Carl Zeiss Sonar 35mm 2.8 ZA, the Voigtländer APO-Lanthar 35mm 2.0 Aspherical and the Sony Zeiss Sonnar 55mm 1.8 ZA, I never use zoom lenses !

    @@PMRTV I also bought A7Cii, because I don't need the extra resolution of A7Cr. But side by side images from A7Cr do look better. Fortunately, it's not difficult to fix orange issues in LR and lower WB temperature. That takes care of most color problems.
