SONY A7Cii Dual Base ISO S-Log3 / S-Cinetone / No PP | For Cleanest Footages
In this video, I'll showcase low light footage captured on the Sony a7cii using various picture profiles. While many Sony users are aware of S-Log3's excellent low light performance, it's crucial to set the correct ISO for optimal results. I'll show you the test result of S-log3, S-cinetone, picture profile off, and give you extra tips about utilizing dual base iso.

Thank you for the test! I'm looking forward to your next test on ZVE1 duo-base ISO as you mentioned. I envy those who know how to handle the S-Log3 for low-light performance. It seems just too complicated for me, especially the "over-exposure" part. I'm already quite confused, not to mention the color grading part. I'll probably stick with a simpler solution without color grading by using PP11 with the ZVE1 and an f/1.4 lens in low light. If I understand correctly, the dual base ISO for ZVE1 on PP11 is 400 and 2000?

Do you have any information if there are any differences between the Slog-3 Picture Profile and the Slog-3 function in the video menu? The problem is that if you activate Display LUTs at the Slog-3 Mode (no picture profile) then the zebras will change compared to slog-3 without activate Display LUT. So you can't expose correctly. If you choose the Picture Profile Slog-3 than everything is fine with the zebras. So it would be interesting if there are any differences. Unfortunatly even the Sony Support in Europe couldn't give me any information about that question.

Wow so you released the video after all! Great way to test and great findings. I will test with my A7C II too. Btw are those captures in the beginning from Jiufen? I just returned from my trip in Taiwan. I had the chance to visit the Ruifang area recently (I made a nice travel film as well), really beautiful place ❤

I find the whole "dual base ISO" stuff extremely confusing as I cannot find any official documentation or recommendation from Sony. Recently I was shooting for a motor sports event with my A7c ii and exclusively used S-Log3/S-Cinetone with ISO 800 or ISO 3200 as I read those would be the base ISO levels I need to use. ISO 800 also is the lowest number in the camera UI that isn't "underlined". From what I understood, going lower than that is ultimately still ISO 800 but the image artificially darkened in post. Now in your test you reveal that ISO125 and ISO500 should be used for S-Cinetone and I'm back again to totally being confused!😅

Just remember s-log3 base ISO 800/3200, s-cinetone 125/500 on a7cii, these are the cleanest numbers

Ahhhh, I think I see my mistake. I'm confusing "S-Cinetone" with "SGamut3.cine". The latter was what I chose in combination with S-Log3. Which would explain why the camera reported ISO 800 as the lowest non-underlined ISO value. In contrast S-Cinetone is a picture profile applied by the camera to give a pre-defined look.

Hi, great video! Was this shot on the a7III, not the a7SIII? I'm quite confused between the a7C and the a7C II. I'm really tempted to get the a7C II mainly for its S-Cinetone, but it's $800 more expensive here. Photography-wise, I know there isn't much difference since I can shoot in RAW and post-process in Lightroom. I prefer point-and-shoot simplicity and don't want to do extensive color grading for videos to achieve natural-looking shots that are usable. Are there no other ways to achieve this with older Sony cameras? Is S-Cinetone really worth the extra $800? Would love to hear your thoughts. Cheers!

I used to think dual base iso doesn't apply to still images. Just did a test, I took a shot of s-log3 ISO 2500 and another ISO3200 with the lens cap on, and increased the exposure and shadow of both images to the most, the ISO 3200 image look much cleaner than the ISO 2500 one. So yes it applies to photos as well.
