Sony a6600 HANDS ON preview! Plus NEW LENSES

Ғылым және технология

This week, Sony announced the new A6600 and A6100 APS-C mirrorless cameras as well as 2 dedicated APS-C lenses - a 16-55mm f/2.8 G and a 70-350mm f/4.5-6.3 G telephoto.
These cameras round out the current Sony crop sensor lineup and compete directly with the new Canon M6 mark II, Fujifilm X-T3 and other aps-c cameras.
Sony invited me to come to New York City this week for the launch and I had several days to shoot on these new cameras and lenses. I'm pretty impressed as I think you should be too.
The autofocus system that Sony has implemented in these cameras is the absolute best on the market right now.
You can pre-order the new cameras and lenses here:

I really like your content and view on things...generally. I do think you're to kind with Sony lately. With the a6600 for instance. Yes it brings a bigger battery, IBIS, headphone jack but it's the same sensor, the evf is really not good, the back screen is terrible (for me) and no mention of the huge price tag. The new 16-55 looks very cool but when you look at all the e-mount lenses going for full frame lenses seems to be the better choice. So I was hopping for a bigger aps-c body to balance those lenses. In fact after writing this down I realize that Sony is just doing Sony from few years ago 😬 I'm still curious on what the ASIII will bring to the table !

My a6400 was the camera I wanted at any price point. The better processor, better focus, and no overheating, all in the small package. I can put my camera in my hoodie pocket and walk around. The 6600 is just getting bigger and bigger until the a7000 is just another FF camera. That’s not what I want! Of course I can’t pocket it with my 700 gram Viltrox 85! Try this lens for portraiture and street shots. It is amazingly sharp and focus is butter. 🧈 Love your no nonsense reviews! Good shooting!

I think this is an excellent review. What camera did you use for your presentation? Next, I see criticism about the camera being overpriced, etc., and that it doesn't shoot 4K video in 60fps. I can't afford the Sony a9 or those other higher end video cameras. So, does the the Sony a6600 still prevail over other devices like the Panasonic Lumix GH5 because of its auto focus capabilities? I have a Canon M50 and its auto focus was terrible when I tried to shoot a 5k race. I am an amateur, old, and I don't have enough reflexes (or eyesight) to do it manually.

The eye AF (on a6600) vs face AF (on a6400), is it really worth it at night and during the day for subjects that are more than 2 meters away? In addition if one owns a OSS i hear its better than IBIS? hence the OSS with a6400 better than a6600 with IBIS and no OSS lens. IF these are reasonable facts than the price difference makes the a6400 substantially more valuable.

Folks seem pretty upset about the recycled hardware but for me the biggest sin is chunking out the grip but not adding a command dial on the front of it. These cameras have aways been a pain in the ass to use and they had a shot to alleviate a lot of the hassle but didn't take it.

I have the A6600 and use it in tandem with the A6400 usually using two different focal length (although at times, I use a modern lens and a legacy lens) but, I opted for the Tamron 28-75mm f.2.8 lens rather than the 16-55mm f/2.8. That way, I can use that lens to switch between my APSC and full-frame bodies. I do love the Tamron and I like it on an APSC camera since the shorter 42mm equivalent focal length is great for shooting people. If I want wider, I will use a 12mm Rokinon f/2.0 lens on the second APSC camera, I switched from Canon and used a 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II lens on my 7D Mark-2. However, looking back at my use, I didn't get a lot of use out of this lens because of the large weight and size of the Canon combination. I purchased the new Sony 70-350mm f/4.5-5.6 G OSS lens because the combination on my A6400 weighs less than half of what the Canon combination weighed. At half the weight of the Canon combination and half or less than half the price of a Sony 200-600mm or the 100-400mm lenses, I can be very happy with the marvelous little 70-350mm G OSS lens...

I'm a Fuji user so I admit my bias, but I really feel like their commitment to APSC really renders Sony's efforts kind of lackluster. It's nice to see them bringing out these new, high quality lenses but their choice of body design I feel doesn't really support these kinds of larger lenses effectively. And while their AF remains impressive, both Fuji and Canon are pushing for better IQ with newer sensors and, in the case of Fuji, better video quality and features. Really, these aren't major complaints and I have no doubt anyone with the know-how would be able to create amazing images and videos with this gear, but considering how forward thinking Sony has been with a lot of their full frame and compact cameras, it's disappointing to see a smaller step forward like this.

I appreciate your videos about the latest and greatest Sony cameras and lenses, but am wondering if Nikon or Canon ever invite you to their product events? I'm an amateur/hobbyist photographer and have Canon gear. It's rather daunting to consider the investment $$$ necessary to make the switch to another camera system. I'm curious about your take on the new Canon EOS 90D. It seems to me to be the last hurrah for APS-C digital SLRs. No doubt a mirrorless version of that camera would be superior, but I imagine Canon invested a lot of time and money in what is essentially an upgrade to the 80D before switching their engineering resources to playing catch-up to Sony in mirrorless.

@They Caged Non It's nice that you've heard about aperture being based on focal length, but if you do not know about a topic and you only know one tidbit of information then you should not give definitive answers. F/1.4 on a lens the size of a pinhead is not the same as F/1.4 on a lens the size of the Earth. Although the pinhead's F/1.4 is relative to focal length, the F/1.4 pinhead transmits less total light to a smaller sensor area and produces a lower electric charge from the photon wells. F/2.0 on your smart phone is not the same as F/2.0 on a Full Frame sensor. That's the reason why you don't get F/2 bokeh on your smart phone. Although the phone's lens is "F2" you're actually getting F/11 bokeh and the camera app must attempt to blur the background artificially. Although the phone's lens is "F2" you're actually getting F/11 Full Frame equivalent light transmission, and therefore your phone isn't so great in low light. 5mm F/2.0 on a 1/2.3" sensor is the equivalent of 28.2mm F/11.2 on Full Frame 35mm F/1.4 on APS-C is the equivalent of 53.5mm F/2.1 on Full Frame Check mmcalc

Also you compare a completely new camera + lense to older ones that have already gone down in price. The APS-C lineup of Sony is not massive but 3d party lenses are excellent. Really think that if you want an APS-C system, just get the Fuji cameras like X-T3 ($1299 right now) that can shoot in 4K up to 60p. It can also shoot 10 bit video internally as well as externally. The body is weather sealed contains the latest 26mp BSI sensor and is a joy to use with Fuji interface of dials. The Fuji color science is the best. You can also get the X-H1 with battery grip and 3 batteries for $999. This body is really amazingly engineered with IBIS that is effective unlike the Sony. The body is weather sealed and has Fuji’s fantastic ergonomics. The dampened shutter is the best I have ever used. Fuji has an exhaustive lens catalog that is optically extensive and weather sealed with fantastic build. Right now, you can get the excellent X-H1 with grip and 16-55 mm 2.8 lens for $1699 right now, which is a bargain. I moved from the A6500 to the Fuji and have been really happy. Fuji is the only manufacturer that makes a complete APS-C system.

Sony adds no new features - well, all in all its great! Canon does the same - damn, Canon, what a shame! Not a Canon fanboy but this seems to me like a typical opinion nowadays.

I'm seeing a lot of negative reactions though, so I'm not seeing that typical positive opinion at all. Also, the problem with Canon is not about not adding features, it's about removing features like 24p)
