In regards to in body stabilization, I wonder if the firmware updates since the release of the A6500 has made it worse. I've got a A6500 and since the last firmware update it seemed to me that it isn't as effective as it used to be. I wonder if there's anyway to compare an original firmware A6500 with the new A6600.

The hardware including IBIS is 90% the same as a6500. The price for this camera is not worth. Sony is trying to sell an old camera at a high price.

I think Sony IBIS is not terrible for video, but really it's much better for stills. If I needed a camera for video and really needed IBIS, the Sony cameras would not be my first choice. On the other hand, if I would be ok with a gimbal , then these cameras are pretty outstanding. The unlimited recording limit, great auto-focus, and battery life are just killer features for anyone who's going to be doing a lot of video shooting.

Thank you for a very good review (as always Gordon), I'm even more convinced now that the A6400 seems to be the most honest Sony APS-C right now. You're getting great value for your buck and price wise I cannot complaint that IBIS isn't there or the battery issue. The sensor, AF, HLG, no limit video recording, _all_ that is only plus-plus-plus... for me. I already have an A7III with two FF lenses, I can switch back and forth according to my needs. The A6400 will be my second camera for interviews (replacing the trusty A5100) as soon as I stop buying guitar gear (oh well, still my primary business..) . Cheers!

Currently I'm grappling with the decision of buying the A6400 or the A6600, and I'm more and more convinced that the IBIS on the A6600 is not worth the extra money (I don't care about the battery). I'd buy the A6400 knowing that I'll use it on a gimbal and I'd buy a gimbal with the money I save purchasing the A6400 and not the A6600.

Can’t help but feel quite let down by this update. They could have done quite a bit more but at just $100 less than an X-T3, it just doesn’t look nearly as appealing compared to the a6400 versus the X-T30. Not at all a bad camera, but for that price, oof. An a7iii with 28-75 f/2.8 or a6600 with the 16-55 f/2.8? Z battery is real nice though. That’s probably the single biggest upgrade.

I believe it'll use the lenses OSS to stabilize the X and Y axis (tilting) and the IBIS to stabilize the Z axis (rolling) but not the other two. For most purposes, I'd say if you have an image stabilized lens, IBIS won't make much of an additional difference.

Thanks for the very complete review. I'm personally underwhelmed. The delta between going prices on Kijiji and the price of the a6600 (excluding sales tax) is about $1,000 CDN. For that, you get better focusing and a bigger battery, but you lose the onboard flash. While it's true that the onboard flash is useless for pro shooting, it comes in handy for family pix as a fill flash and I like it on the a6500. Quite simply, the a6600 is not IMHO worthy of an extra $1,000. I'm tempted to find a nice used a7III and upgrade to full-frame for roughly the same difference in price.

I feel like a6600 is finished a6500 - I mean what a6500 should be. Without screen dimming or display off while filming with external display. There is absolutely no progress for me. I would buy it if the full HD video is better (even with this obsolete codec and bitrate), but now I have to find some new platform for video :-/

The lack of pop-up flash doesn't bother me one bit. In the almost twenty-years I have been shooting digital, I have only used the pop-up a vey few times. I am wedded to the Godox/Flashpoint system - either on camera or with the use of the Godox/Flashpoint trigger. I use a lot of lenses, both modern and Legacy that don't have image stabilization. The IBIS of the A6600 helps a bit. My favorite upgrade is the Z=Battery - especially since I often shoot with the A6600 in conjunction with my A7iii; it is nice to use identical batteries with both cameras. Makes packing for trips and jobs easier. The lack of a dual card shot doesn't bother me since I no longer shoot professionally. I would like a 1/8000 second mechanical shutter since I often shoot outdoors wide open with fast lenses... I like the A6600 with 28-75mm f/2.8 Tamron lens, with the 70-350mm Sony and with the 14mm f/2.8 Rokinon...

It depends how good the OIS was on that particular lens. Some of them are very good, but others less so. For instance, the 16-50mm kit zoom doesn't have great OIS. Gordon, thanks for this extremely detailed test, as usual. I am a Sony APS-C user for a long time, having purchased, lately, the A6500. I am really fed up with Sony playing around with these ridiculous ergonomic bodies, even the full frame models, A7, don’t have an ergonomic body to write home about. I am just waiting for the Fuji X-H2, with XT-3 sensor, in body stabilization (Sony stabilization is a joke one), seriously color science, to switch and never go back. Hopefully they will include the vari-angle monitor, applied to the new Fuji X-A7. It will be a killer camera! Canon, Nikon, Sony, beware! Sony has been playing around with it’s customers, for a long time, sure, with top leading phase detect auto focus, but not really truly innovative where they could. Come on, why never a vari-angle monitor? Why never a really touch functionality. They will pay the price. XT-3 is already an excellent camera, just lacking the stabilization. Why: because Fuji listen to it’s customers.

Gordon, you (and every other reviewer) totally missed the most important upgrade in the A6600. The memory card slot has been rotated 90 degrees so it no longer requires tweezers to remove the card! Hallelujah! All kidding aside, this seems to be typical of Sony upgrades. Add a couple upgrades that folks have been asking for, but leave off some other easily doable upgrades (full touch implementation, colored AF reticle as per the A7RIV) and even take away a few features for no apparent reason. (in body flash and IBS on the A6400). That, and leaving a few badly needed upgrades (better VF, deeper buffer, UHS II memory card slot, joy stick) on the lab bench, ready to go but held out until the next upgrade when they will give us just enough to tempt us without putting it all on the table. Sony is not alone in this marketing scheme, they all do it but it certainly is irritating to say the least.

So after much deliberation and many camera review videos I decided to give Sony a go and bought the A6300 for £400 off eBay. I also bought the 18-105 f4 lens. Wow fucking awesome camera VERY happy. Unlimited 4K video recording with excellent quality and full-speed reliable tracking autofocus, hmm, really appealing. The E mount lens system is the superior today of any others, giving the option to upgrade to beasts like A9, A7III, A7RIV. Definitely, X-T3 is ok, but it's an esoteric X-mount world, I was there, APS-C only, a kind of dead-end. I recently visited a Tamron and Sigma showroom, and I spent there a number of long hours experimenting with their brilliant lenses specifically designed for Sony E mount. This was really eye opening, Sony, Zeiss (Loxia, Batis), Sigma, Tamron all are churning out excellent lenses. You haven't mentioned the PZ18-110OSS, which is a beast of a video lens, available only for E mount. In this context, Fujifilm is really a tiny system, very small market. Wise people suggest to buy into a system and not into a single camera. I think you were totally right when you explained that the biggest competitor is the A7III, the king of mirrorless cameras today with its price and features. The A7III doesn't have the new tracking AF, but its photo and video AF is terrific. Who cares an esoteric Fujifilm gizmos when the A7III is here. With the most recent price drops and firmware updates even the Z6 is a severe competitor, too. It has no video eye AF, but its video AF in general is OK, Z6 has the 30-minute limited recording, but it's full frame and part of the impressive Nikon lens ecosystem.

Missing in all the reviews to date is the most important statistic...which camera do actual people tend to use when they have various cameras lying around --- the large/heavy one or the lighter, more compact one?! I have a sony a6000 and love it's small size for traveling and shooting quickly. I now want to upgrade and was torn between the sony a6600 and the Sony A7III so I went to a local camera store and picked up the a7iii plus had them put on a full frame lens. The a7iii camera was SO heavy and cumbersome in my hands that it was a huge turn off. When traveling or shooting internationally or even locally a large camera-lens set up feels very intrusive. Unless you are a pro, what counts is what camera you will ACTUALLY USE, NOT what takes the best picture. I've read so many times about the expensive DSLR cameras sitting around idly because they are simply too cumbersome. THIS issue, of weight and size, -and the A7III has a HUGE weight and size issue because of the expensive, long, and thick lenses, compared to the Sony a6600, is rarely addressed adequately. Again, a REAL WORLD survey of what cameras people reach for would show (my bet) that the smaller, lighter, easier to maneuver body/lens set up wins hands down (in terms of frequency of use).

That‘s one advantage of the Fujifilm X-T3 regarding power, with its USB Type-C port supporting Power Delivery, which a lot of powerbanks and USB charging bricks offer. I'm not convinced. A Sony a7 III with their 24-105 F/4 would currently be cheaper and do more. Keep in mind that not all f/2.8 apertures are equal. You have to consider crop factor => an f/2.8 lens on APS-C delivers the same results as an f/4 lens on full frame. The ridiculousness of Sony's approach to small compact cameras is painfully obvious from your choice of lens to show this camera with. The lens is twice a big as the body, probably weighs twice as much and is just as expensive. So a $1400 compact camera body turns into a $3k usable camera the size of a Sony full frame kit, that is anything but small and compact. Why bother when the A7mk3 is $600 more and probably the same slightly used at KEH or Ebay.

Feels like Sony is now borrowing Canon's cripple hammer to protect their FF lineup too. Even if they brought out those two lenses, I'd not trust them enough to be really invested into APS-C, and their APS-C line still feels like just an entry drug to get you into the full frame world, in other words, (expensive) APS-C lenses feel more like wasted money. Personally, I'd avoid them and use FF lenses, or cheaper ones, until it's time to get the FF body too, or if I'm sure APS-C is enough, stick to Fuji who might not be the leader in terms of autofocus speed etc., but don't hold back or cripple either. And sometimes I wonder what would be if Samsung was still in the game...

I find that hilarious and sickening that such former beasts in the industry dropped the ball.Whatever Sony is doing, they are still learning, while they make PlayStation,TVs,and provide financial services.I used to shoot Sony until the camera got damaged, and my FF camera now has a Sony sensor. Now it's Sony who has led the pack in innovation, along with Fuji,Panasonic, and everyone else EXCEPT Nikon and Canon.oh,and I would not bother with APS-C glass anyway, unless it either came with the kit or was close to free.

thanks for the nice and fluid in depth review....great camera, but for me the Panasonic g90 is probably a more appealling all round crop sensor camera with its effective image stabilization and wider range of lenses.....

The Fuji X-H1 and Sony A6500 are much cheaper and both have image stabilization. The A6500 doesn't cost much more than the Canon M6 II currently.

A6600 is only $200 more than A6500 right now new. Probably worth that for 2x battery life, 180 flip screen, jack, improved AF. The A6400 however is a full $500 cheaper. I had hoped the A6600 IBIS would be much improved, but alas it's not. Makes you think you could buy a pretty sweet gimbal, couple batteries and just get the 6400. All the other negs on the 6600 don't matter to me, but if you're going to put IBIS on the camera and charge a real premium, then that IBIS ought to WORK. It would put this camera out of reach of every other camera IMO. But it's just not that good.

@@EPeltzer You forgot to mention the removal of the internal pop-up flash. This boy ain't even a Full-Frame camera and removing the pop-up flash is basically a middle finger to people who use their camera for both work and travel.

Great review. I’ve been asking myself if I want an a6600 or just get an a7 iii. While I’m still not sure your video has given more to think on.

I am really disappointed that it still use the same old, slow sensor. The MP count doesn't bother me but the rolling shutter is really a problem. I don't even care about 4K60 ... but at least they could have improve the current 1080p/4K codec or give me a pixel binned 4K to get rid of the rolling shutter. Also, I don't like that they neglect their APSC eco system ... I will keep my A6300 for now but I think I am going to switch to Fuji or Canon EF-M when time come to upgrade.

Yes, the rolling shutter is an issue for videographers - you have to film carefully.

Imo, at this price point Sony could implement more advanced features, especially since it's a flagship product

As I hopefully pointed out, it is lacking some things you would perhaps expect at this price, but equally it does have things that rivals don't, so it's a tricky balance.Iff they added twin UHS II card slots, a higher res EVF, joystick etc, the price would become even closer to the A7 III. What features would you have liked to see, and how much would you be willing to pay?

@@cameralabs 2k for example, and 10-bit video. Maybe uncompressed raw, which might be handy in certain circumstances. And more small thing - little bit better app for camera. I guess these kinds of apps is kinda same, but Sony's imagine edge mobile requires android 6.0, while my phone have only 5.0, and no higher. Fuji app can work at android 5.0, and for video and photo framing I found small tilting up screen not that helpful - couple feet from camera and you barely can see it, and you still need to release the shutter button, and personally for me these apps is free replacement of remote control for shutter with possibility of framing your shot. But most importantly - proper touch screen :(
