What are your thoughts on the 55-210, good or dud?

I've got one, probably 6 years old now but I used it only few times because I bought a 18-200mm zoom few weeks later. I keep is in a box with few other cameras and I put a bag of 1kg, plus a dozen of smaller bags of silica gel Yesterday, after watching this youtube, I took it out and used it on my Sony a6400 but I could not get it in focus (auto). No problem with other lenses that means nothing wrong with the body. I think could be its CPU or something. Is it worth to fix it or throw it to a bin ?

Hi Aaron. I actually had the 55-200 on the a-mount and I absolutely loved it, lovely for capturing a nice DOF, and the focal length was usable in a lot of different situations. When you don't have much to spend, it's absolutely value for money.

It is a fun lens to have, if like me you don't want to pay more. With cheap extension tubes it is good for macro, but outside in the sun.

I got this for 90 bucks on ebay, I've been using it on my A7RIV crop mode and it's awesome.

I use this lens quite a bit. I have taken photos in the mountains that I have received great comments and compliments on . I have taken photos of my grandchildren playing baseball, and in one shot I managed to get the ball, just after my grandson hit it, still in the air in front of him. Everyone loved that shot. I am an Oma who loves to take photos and I am very happy with the results I have gotten using this lens.

I find the lens great for closeups without disturbing small wildlife. For the price, I find it very good. Some good bokha effects to be had too.

I bought this lens brand new for $140 about 2 years ago. I use it mostly to take close-up and macro photos of flowers. I usually take macro photos by attaching a macro filter to this lens. The lens' slightly soft edge never bothers me because the subject that I take is usually in the center of the frame where the lens performs well in terms of resolution. I would say this lens is still my most favorite lens till this day because of its light weight, compact size and acceptable resolution. I will not part with it as long as I stay with Sony crop sensor camera.

Got this lens for like $50 and I can honestly say it does an amazing job!

wow 50$ that's amazing! I want to get it at 100 but I can't find it anywhere, at the shop they sell them used for 150$ and even they don't have in stock for the moment! Not such an easy lens to come by in my country.

I use it on my a6600, and it's great. If the soft edges bother you then shoot knowing you can crop the soft edges out. For the price it's a great learning lens that travels well

I got it last month for my new a6400. As a beginner I loved the shots I got. I had to struggle to setup the device first. Now, after watching few informative videos, I can say, I get good pics of it :))

Just got this lens along with the a6400. Will be my primary gear for planespotting till i save up for the 70-350mm G OSS.

@@Nafaksuki i have actually a lot of photos approved by jetphotos/airliners using the 55-210. Its a good enough telephoto in terms of focus speed provided lighting is in your favour. I have already migrated to the 70-350 that lens is a lot faster in focus, sharper on the sides of the image and reminded of my old Nikkor 70-300 vr lens that i used with my d7100.

@@jahurz93 I'm also considering this lens for planespotting specifically. Glad to know someone else has been using it for that purpose.

I still have this lens and uses it quite often. I just received the SIGMA 24-70 for Christmas and I am using it on my Sony a6600. I will eventually upgrade to the a Sony full frame lens, but for now, I will continue to shoot with my 6600. I also have the SIGMA 561.4, Sony 50mm, and the Sony 85 2.8.

I have heard complaints that this lens was not sharp. But I have found this lens great for its price. I had not used it much in the past preferring my bridge for long shots, but thus has changed. Two years back when I was on safari in Sri Lanka. I brought this lens and found it fast and very good with many good shots. I have also started to use it for indoor portraits and small group photos (using flash/softbox). Its easy to crop in and frame. Just my thoughts.

Arron, I’m a huge fan of your videos! I actually bought this lens recently in 2020 because of your previous video about it. I use it with the a5100 and my a7ii and absolutely love the results! You hit the nail on the head with all of the points. Keep up the good work!

May i ask a little question? Is it sharp just in the center, or in the center intended as the vertical zone between the left side and the right side?

how about using this lens on a full frame like a7iii ?

so this will go on the sony a5100? what high quality lens would you suggest for youtube videos? im going to be going on camera soon i only have the kit lens at the moment will a high quality lens make a lot of difference to the way i look on video? the camera will be still i wont be moving around so does that also make a difference? thanks i subscribed by the way

I use this lens more than any others on my Sony a6000. Issues you raised are effectively overcome in post production.

Would you recommend this lense for zhuin stabilizer gimble.

The minimum focus distance on this lens is 1 meter, so bear in mind any closer than that the Ken's won't focus. If that's ok for what you need to do, then yes this would be a good lens.

You can do it by attaching a quality macro filter to this lens. I take macro flower shots this way and the picture quality is as good as without a filter.

Old vid, but how come you didn't point out that that the 55-to 210mm lens on APSC sensor is actually equivalent to a 82.5 - 315mm on a full frame sensor. and the 16-50mm is equivalent to a 24-70mm on a full frame sensor ???

Well I just bought it for 189€ And now I have 35mm F1.8 16-55 kit lense and 55-210 kit lens, should be enough for non pro camera user

it's a shame that Sony still haven't made a lens to bridge the gap between this lens and the 70-350. i've just ordered this for my a6400, and i'm sure it will be absolutely fine but had there been an option for around 400-500 with OSS, i'd likely have gone for that

I just picked this up for $75. I'm not a pro I just use it on my a6000 for casual fun photo dates with my wife or to capture moments without pulling my phone out.

You'll get better background blur with the Sony 50mm f1.8. The wider the max aperture, the more background blur you can get.

I consider buying it for day time portrait photography with photoflash. I think i'll get more than what i'm gonna pay for. Second hand is in Turkey also around 100 us dollars. Your review was helpful thank you.

Yes, you can! You can switch on and off the stabilization from the menu.

Has anyone used this with the a7ii? With the APSC setting?

hello, I gave myself this photographic lens for Christmas, I paid about 260 euros new, I didn't have much choice of second-hand items, I don't trust a lot (the ones I found were only 90 euros lower price). Indeed, I have already noticed the limitations, but to spend about 700 euros, I have not felt it. However, I feel "quite" satisfied. however, what can I find third parties? Here in Italy I have not seen anything

90 Euros 2nd hand does sound too low for this lens, buying new was probably the right choice! Tamron and Sigma both make good 3rd party e mount lenses.

I am not sure if sigma has telephoto but i know they work just like the sony lens in many cases on my prime lens

Some days i received a second hand copy. Try it F8-F11 is very sharp! Using with 6300 and A7 Thank you for the video.

True, f7 + is good but u can try zoom only to 135 mm max then u will see more Sharp images :)

You certainly can, just be aware of the 'noise' than is added by jumping up the ISO, it can make shots look grainy.

It's inbuilt and you don't need to turn it on
