In this video I compare the Sony 35mm F1.8 lens (SEL35F18) to the Sony 28mm F2 (SEL28F20). Both of these are excellent lenses, the 35mm is just a little more excellent for the Sony APSC line of mirrorless cameras.

    Thanks for the video, I have been struggled between these two for weeks. And finally I bought the 28mm yesterday. I do agree that the sharpness is a bit less than the 35mm but in my opinion the focal length of the 28mm is more versatile. And it is a little easier to hold, too.

    I see many comments on sharpness and that its mostly because the one is APS-C and the otherone full frame, but seeing some of the darker shots I've noticed that the diffrence was secnificant bigger and so I wonder if the OSS in the 35 was turned on versus the lack of having one in the 28mm?

    I own the 35mm and I can say that its one of the must have Sony lenses. At low light its pretty satisfying, the bokeh, clarity, size, picture quality is up there when you consider the price. If anyone is wondering to choose the Kit lens or the 35mm, i suggest you spend extra dollars on 35mm, you won't be disappointed.

    Multiply the focal length by 1.5 to calculate the effective focal length on a crop sensor. The full frame vs apsc lens difference doesnt matter unless you are using an apsc lens on a full frame - youll get vignetting.

    kentao4 You are misunderstanding how lens sizing works. A 30mm full frame and a 30mm crop lens will give you the exact same image on an APSC sensor. The focal length doesn’t change from a “crop lens” to a “full frame lens”. The multiplier is the same. The only difference is the opening on the back of the lens is larger, allowing the full frame sensor to see the full image.

    Danny Dam He has already reviewed the Sigma 1.4 and it was proven to be the optically better lens. Despite this the reviewer held a preference for Sony 35mm overall. I don’t agree with this but it’s his review and his opinion which is fair enough. I don’t shoot video either so the OSS wasn’t important to me. If you want test stats the DxOmark results are there for both lenses with the Sigma producing better results everywhere.

    Thanks for the review. When you are using a FE lens on a crop sensor you are using less than half of the lens area that normally would be used on a full-frame sensor. (44%). With that in mind one should expect the 35 to be sharper. If the 28 are as sharp on a crop camera as the 35, it actually means that it can deliver more than twice the resolution - which would be amazingly good. That is why buying FE lenses on a crop sensor might be a waste of money and weight if you are not planning to upgrade to FF. On top of that you have OS on the 35. The 35 is on my wishlist.. (but so is the a7ii - dilemma..)

    Einar Hals wouldn't the 35 in fact be wider than the 28 (44 with crop factor) since it is on an asp-c sensor? How was the 28 still wider?

  • @iyzyz

    @iyzyz

    kentao4 because manufacturers specify the actual focal length and not the crop equivalent even on a crop sensor lens. So the the 35 is equivalent to a 52mm focal length (35*1.5), and the 28 is equivalent to a 44mm focal length (28*1.5).

    You CAN indeed use full frame lenses on APS-C cameras. However, bear in mind that the crop factor with not only affect your focal length, but it will also affect the APERTURE. I think the latter is a key point that many people don't pay attention to.....

    Sony 35mm is an APS-C lens which means it creates a 24mm wide image at the sensor. Sony FE 28mm is a Full Frame lens which means it creates a 36mm wide image at the sensor. Only this lens' focal distance needs to be multiplied with the crop factor.

    All lenses (full frame or crop) are measured in the same mm. Both lenses need to be multiplied by a 1.5 factor when used on an APSC sensor. A "full frame" 35mm and a crop sensor 35mm will be the same focal length on an APSC body.

    Yup. Phone tech improves rapidly, especially with the dual-cam setups now. I was surprised my friends' Android flagships keeping pace with and sometimes surpassing an albeit older NEX even in museum (lower light) settings. The Android built-in HDR mode is a killer feature w/o having to take multiple pics. They had a much easier trip logistically while having similar or better pics. The A6000's are also better than earlier NEX's but the improvement hasn't been as drastic as on phone tech. Dual cam phones can also give prime lenses a run for the money on shallow DOF shots.

  • @ArthurR

    You are right about technology improving. Most photographers and videographers find value in interchangeable lens systems, the larger image sensor, better low light, etc. Then you look at the price and resale value.... $1000 phone that will be worth $300 in two years versus $500 camera that will be worth $400 in a 2 years.

    Why do people always go back to the Sigma 30mm 2.8? Is it the price? The Sigma 30mm 1.4 is a better lens, but neither one is as good as a native sony for focus accuracy. If you want sharp, get the Sigma 30mm 1.4. If you want accurate, fast focus with OSS, get the Sony 35mm.

    I can't help to think, but they are probably identical if you had moved in to capture the same composition. By moving in with the 28, the bokeh will be "creamier" as well. I suppose if you do a lot of indoor photography where you might not have enough room, you definitely should get the 28 mm and crop, whereas the 35 would mostly work great in open areas like the outdoors. .Let’s to be clear. Sony 28mm f2 is full frame lens. So on Sony a6000 it is 42mm when Sony 35mm 1.8 is made for crop sensor. So now I’m absolutely confused. In your video on the left was 28mm [42mm] and on the right hand side was 35mm f1.8. So again 42mm on the right and 35mm on the left. I hope you know what I mean? So why visual 42mm is wider than 35mm. Could you explain me this or I missing something? I have Sony a6000 but never tried with my 28mm f2 because I use it on my a7 mark ll.

    Nikon Fx you multiply the lens by 1.5 if you are on a crop sensor camera. The type of lens doesn’t matter. The full frame lens just means it will mount and provide an image to cover a full frame sensor. If you put the 35mm lens on a full frame camera you’ll see really dark corners.

  • @sunnydoran

    Taylor Brawner one more time specially for you. Sony 28mm lens is full frame lens and on cameras like Sony A7 or a9 it will be 28mm but on Sony A6000 it will be 42mm. If you think that I’m not right read another comments. So your test is absolutely wrong because you tested 42mm and 35 mm lenses.

  • @taylorbrawner2052

    @taylorbrawner2052

    6 жыл бұрын

    Nikon Fx the full frame reference for the 28mm lens refers to the fact that the lens will cover a full frame sensor (a7, a7s, a7r). The crop sensor lens (in this case the 35mm) will technically fit the full frame camera but show heavy vignetting because it covers part of the sensor. In either case, if you are looking at either lens on a crop sensor body (a6000, a6300, a5100) then you need to apply the crop factor. But that is because of the sensor...not the lens.

I did wonder if I should have bought the FE28mm instead of the 35mm F/1.8, especially indoors when I'm backing up to the wall, and it's still too tight sometimes. But it has been a stellar lens for me. Many others claim it is unacceptably soft wide open, but that has not been my experience; I find that the lens loves people and renders portraits beautifully. Your tests disprove the softness claims. Add the OSS and you have an underrated gem, imo. Your videos have been very informative. Cheers.

    @technologymafia the 28 is the better lens because it is more versatile. On top of that it is more future proof if one decides to go full frame the 28 also has 2 converters to make it wider. The 28 is weather resistant too

  • @ArthurR

    @ArthurR

    6 жыл бұрын

    William Mejia I slightly agree with you. The weatherproofing is nice, but the $200+ converters aren’t selling points to me because the image quality suffers. As far as future proofing, if you get a full frame camera, you will be selling off all of your APSC gear anyway. Buying a full frame lens because “one day I’ll buy a full frame camera” makes no sense to me. Buy what you need now, and then buy what you need later, later.

    Also, isn’t it unfair that you’re comparing sharpness without moving the camera closer for the 28mm? I would assume you want to capture the same field of view and then compare. Otherwise the details will be further away and obviously fuzzier than the 35mm which is optically a more zoomed in focal length

    Thanks for your excellent and scientific reviews of Sony e-mount lenses, using aps-c. I'm considering switching from Lumix and really appreciate the deep dive into the ecosystem. I also really love your sensitive portraiture of your beautiful wife. One can feel your love for her through your lenses and you make us love her too. I'm a recent subscriber and find your videos way better than many of the others on the topic of e-mount lenses for the alpha 6k series of bodies, but this one was weaker and I wanted to tell you why I thought so. It's a technical objection I have with your methodology on this review: that of not correcting for focal length differences in your head to head analysis of sharpness and resolution. You do a great job of showing us that different focal lengths give different views of the same scene (and it's really useful that you establish that with your first example). It's amazing and far from intuitive how big a difference in field of view there is between 28mm and 35mm. But then you go on to analyze sharpness and resolution without equalizing these focal length differences. The 35 fares far better than the 28 on your zoomed in views simply because your subject is using fewer pixels on the 28mm and you have to zoom in farther. I founhd myself regretting you didn't take a step closer with the 28, like you would have if you were simply using the lens. To really understand the differences in sharpness between the two lenses the subject should use as many pixels in sample photos from each lens. Only then can we tell which lens is sharper. "At a given distance" makes sense for birding or sports shots where you cannot adjust your distance to the subject. But that never seems to be the issue with wide angle lenses in my experience. My most pressing questions about these two lenses were how the differences in focal length and f-stop between these two lenses made them different artistic tools (if they, in fact, did). I also wanted to know about color saturation, sharpness, bokeh, and the aforementioned quesion of how it performs as an artistic tool *when you have a given subject comparably framed*. I understand that your scientific method requires the absolute considency of the two lenses on the same tripod done at the same time, to minimize the variable. It works really well when your have equal or very close focal lengths. Somehow it didn't work here because the focal lengths were a bit too different.

    For the portrait shots where you in AF-C drive mode and where you using single point focus on the front eye when shooting wide open? If not, then your test was pretty useless as the depth of field is pretty narrow and your subject's normal swaying will result in inaccurate focus. As for landscape shots, the wider the focal length, the more you need to stop down the lens to get sharp backgrounds at distance. The fact that you were shooting wide open at infinity is the reason why the 35mm appeared to have better background resolution. If you had done the same comparison with the 35mm and the 50mm, then the 50mm would have likely had better resolution at those distances. You won't experience that to the same degree when shooting at closer distances. Next time, stop down the lenses to increase the depth of field sufficiently to take that variable out of the equation when comparing those shots.
