If you could only pick one, would it be the 24mm f/1.4 GM, or the 85mm f/1.4 GM, or would you get the Sony 24mm GM and then a Samyang 85mm f/1.4? I don't have enough money for everything. :)

Absolutely agree with you. I really love my 24GM. It's perfect for travel photography. A few days ago, I've just added a 50GM to my camera bag for portrait shots. It gave me superb Bokeh. Personnelly, this couple is perfect match for me.

Ha,ha, Pierre-I certainly didn't overthink it! I bought my copy while I was waiting a ride to the airport and about to start a two month trip! It was waiting for me when I got back - talk about delayed gratification but totally worth it. As everyone who owns has been saying- it is a special lens and I can't wait to travel with it!

Pierre the first prime lens I bought for my A7II was the Zeiss Batis 85mm f1.4 and the second was the Sony Zeiss 16-35mm f4. Going through my files I found the vast majority of the photos I took with the 16-35 were right around 24mm, and so I decided to pull the trigger on the 24mm f1.4. Since I got my A7RIII the 24mm pretty much lives on it, except when I want the compression/look of a longer focal length and voila the 85mm is there. So happy to hear your go to lens combo is what I landed on myself. I love love love the 24mm for its performance but also its size. Can’t say enough good things about this lens. Walking around, close ups of people and my dogs, wide shots in the Shenandoah National Park - it just does a great job. Super follow up to the previous video, which factored heavily into my decision to buy the 24mm in he first place.

    Trying to decide between a combo of the following: 24 + 55 or the 35 + 55 + 85. My rationale for t 24 + 55 is that I can crop (I mainly shoot video) which will give me 24, 36, 55 and 82 with two lenses....

The price was tough to swallow, but I take my 24 with me everywhere. It doesn’t matter if I’m doing astro, landscapes, street, the occasional portrait, my 24 GM is getting used for at least a bit of it. I love it!

Trevor M Honestly, all of it. I prefer a wider focal length and 24mm is about perfect for me. Usually I prefer a 35mm but I have an a7riii, so I can easily crop in. I love its fast aperture, it’s weight and size, and just the general feel of it in my hands. For me, it’s just a lens that really makes me want to use it.

  • @cballspradley

    @cballspradley

J J That’s kind of a tough one. Obviously zooms are more versatile but I prefer primes. And if I could only pick one prime to travel with, it’d be this one. I typically shoot wider shots and like I said, 24mm is pretty great for most of the styles I enjoy (landscape, astro, street). Plus I also have an a7riii, so I feel comfortable cropping in a good bit. Usually, my kit is just my 24mm, 55mm, and 70-180mm, so I feel weird if I don’t have it with me.

I do have a Sony 24 mm f/1.4 GM and a Sony 85 mm f/1.8. I agree that they're amazing and are a wonder to use, even if I find the auto-focus of the 85 mm super slow (but it forced me to work more with the manual focus, which is interesting!). I just discovered your video by chance and it's really great and well explained. Thank you!

I have 4 Sony and 2 Tamron lenses for my A7M3 and the 24mm GM was my first and still is the most used lens. 24mm just works on so many occasions for me. Just to name a few points, low light shooting is epic with this lens, the bokeh has the quality of the 85mm GM, the lens is so small and light that just like Pierre says it's much less intrusive in street photography than the usual full frame lenses and one of the best things is also that I know no other wide angle lens where distortion is such an absolute non-issue. My second most used lens is the 100mm STF GM, so I actually use my 2 prime lenses more often than my 4 zooms ;) PS Using prime lenses is actually very normal for all the Smartphone shooters out there, so I don't know why it shouldn't be normal on full frame cameras as well. Prime lenses are superior in many ways to zooms and the only disadvantage is actually the obvious ... the missing zoom.

Great video. I used the 24-70 GM as my main lens for years but a few months ago went 16-35 G Master and it became my favorite lens. I could see where the 24mm which is smaller, and 1.4 vs 2.8 could definitely be worth trying. I have the Sony 28 f2, which is a super sharp lens though the G Master lenses have proven superior.

i absolutely agree with you. 24mm Prime is the most versatile lens you can choose. You can do nearly everything with it. And especially with 1.4 and close focus distance, you can shoot indoor, you can do environmental portraits, you can do close up photography with nice bokeh and so on. If only one lens, i would choose the 24mm. I loved my 16mm 1.4 Fujinon (=24mm on FF). And i sold all my Fuji gear and go with FF in the Future (because of dynamic range and shadow recovery). Maybe Sony and 24mm 1.4 or the Nikon Z6 and 24mm 1.8. But will go with only a 24mm lens. Less is more. Do Photography since 35 years, and meanwhile i can say, 24mm is the most versatile lens ever, you just have to learn, what you can do with it, and it´s a lot

Would you prefer a Sony a7 iii with kit lenses or the Sony a7 ii with this lens? I found a used Sony a7 ii for a great price and I was thinking about getting an a7 iii, but I'm not a professional and I think my money would be better spent getting some amazing lenses before I splurge for a newer camera. Any advice is appreciated. I only have about $2000 to spend for now. For $2000, I could have the Sony A7 ii, the kit 24-70, kit 50mm and this amazing lens Sony 24mm F/1.4. I'm interested in mostly astrophotography, landscapes and taking better pictures of my family when we travel. I figure I can always upgrade the body down the road if I get more serious into photography. I'm upgrading from the Nikon d7000, so quite a big upgrade with whatever I choose.

And whilst it’s great for architecture and 50% of my landscapes, is too wide for most street photography. As I have the 135mm GM f1.8 (fabulous lens), I am considering the 55mm or the 85mm GM.

Pierre, I think you have done a fantastic job showcasing the low light capabilities of the new Sony 24mm F.14 GM. I liked the video and subscribed to your channel. Do you think the low light capabilities of the 24mm F.14 GM outweigh the 16-35mm F2.8 GM for outdoor low light video conditions drastically? I do a lot of low light virtual walk tours with the 16-35mm F2.8 GM right now (Using A7iii body + Zhiyun Crane 2 Stabilizer). I usually set the focal length to around 17mm or 18mm to compensate for the Sony 4K video crop and Adobe Premiere software stabilization crop while still providing a true virtual wide angle experience. Despite being absolutely blown away by the 24mm F1.4, I am concerned it is simply not wide enough for my style of videos. I definitely welcome your opinion if you know any better alternative. Anyway I would greatly appreciate if you could check out my recent videos and provide HONEST feedback. Subscribe if you enjoy :)

Have the 16-35 2.8 GM on FF, and the Sigma 16mm 1.4 on crop bodies. Big and versatile vs compact and light kit. Trying to justify a 24 1.4 on FF but maybe not worth it in my case. Thanks for the video.

@@aligizzle69 Hello Alex; I got the answer from another youtuber. The 24mm GM f/1.4 has an excellent sharpness, extremely well-controlled distortion and chromatic aberration. He is wide and fast. The lens is better for low-light motion and action, better if you need to defocus backgrounds or foregrounds at 24mm, and males better sunstars. The 24-70mm GM f/2.8 has a constant f/2.8 maximum aperture, this lens maintains consistent performance throughout the zoom range and benefits working in low-light conditions and with selective focus techniques. This lens is covering a wide-angle to portrait-length perspectives, which makes him a good lens for weeding shooting (more practical one lens for different scenario).

I use a CHEAP old adapted 24mm 2.8 lens on my a7iii... it cost me $100 rather than $1400. my rationale is I'm generally not as worried about background blur with a wide angle, the whole point is to get perspective / scene in addition to your subject. So I can get away with manual focus and f2.8... mainly because I can "run and gun" with it using zone focus (set to 5.6 and choose a critical focus range of 3 to 15 feet and you can pretty much ignore focus for a lot of things). Also the size of the 24mm 2.8 is MUCH more of a lightweight, small prime lens feel than the f1.4 which is still huge by prime lens on mirrorless camera standards. I will however spend good money on an 85mm 1.8 autofocus to accompany it... The point of that lens is background separation and thin DOF.. meaning autofocus is a MUST and worth spending the extra money. Luckly sony makes a decent one at under $600, so no need to throw your money away on a GM lens (I suspect Pierre got his 24 GM for free, but I could be wrong). Just my 2c !

I think most people who do video choose the 24mm F1.4 as their fav, and those that only do photography choose the 35mm F1.8. I agree either paired with the 85mm is ideal. Although if you have the 35mm, you will need something else for astrophotography (I use 16-35mm F2.8). Great Video! I would love to see you do a video on lens strategies. To me I am always balancing flexibility, portability and image quality (obvious price too), but how I chose to do that definitely had some mistakes in the journey, and definitely has compromises. Anyways interested in what you think.

Raymond Barmore I found a store that had the lenses on display and the 24 in paper says it’s light but not much of a difference to choose to carry it vs the 16-35, and the 1.4 has very specific situations to be making a difference over a 1.8 at least for me. I do mainly travel photography and dogs, just starting to take pictures of a baby in my family. So I went with the 35 because it’s much lighter for traveling when you’re not needing to go so wide, and for portraits I don’t need to worry so much about distortion of faces. So far I went to Disney world and universal studios with the lens, perfect for having the camera out all times without a care for hitting the lens in a crowd which I felt before with the much bigger 16-35. And so far doing great with family portraits. It does have some vignetting in corners specially wide open on certain situations which I’m still figuring out. The 16-35 I never saw vignetting but if your back hurts so much that you consider leaving camera back home then going for a lighter lens makes a huge difference. The 24mm felt to me really only for landscape and architecture that need to go that wide, or group shots, so if I know I need wide wide then I rather take the 16-35

Let me just say this: the image quality is excellent on the 24mm, the size is small, the lens is light, the low light performance is amazing, and the bokeh is out of this world. The 24- 105mm is a great lens as well though in my opinion as an all around go to lens.
