    I have the 24-105 Sony. Very pleased. Too often I'm at 105 wishing it went to 135 or maybe 150. I can't imagine being limited to 75. 24-105 is my walk around do it all, and the stabilization on it works a treat! You get what you pay for with this FF beast!

    24-105 is my travel choice. F4 is plenty for landscape and it is very sharp. The wide range and ability of semi macro at 105 makes it the only lens you need which it worth the price. In addition, it’s a native Sony lens, I programmed the focus button to be eye focus plus the combination of stabilization from both body and lens, make shooting people or pets in motion an easy task. The lens is on sale during the holiday season, get one and you won’t regret.

    It’s refreshing to have quality pictures to compare each lens, whereas other reviewers try to-Palm off crap pictures in haste to review. I personally have the Sony 24-105 as I want the further reach, but appreciate the quality of the Tamron; hence me buying the Tamron 17-28mm. These with my G Master 100-400mm fulfill my range (albeit with the 56mm F1.8 and 90mm Macro to complement and enhance). Fortunately my son has this Tamron 28-75 should I need it - life is good occasionally, but not often! In summary, life and photography is good on either side!

    A major problem with the tamron lens is the price depreciation in where I live. It feels like the thing depreciates a lot more than the native sony lens. Not to mention that it becomes a bit more difficult to sell.

    I think the Sony would probably be best for me. The OSS and extra reach is really appealing. I like the f2.8 of the Tammy, but I have primes for anything I would need with a faster aperture. Hope to get my hands on the Sony soon! Great review!

    Personally, In most case, if the 28mm is not wide enough, so does the 24mm, and just enable to crop mode, Tamron gets about 112mm and still gets 18MP for A7R3, focal length is not a big deal for me. Furthermore size matter and aperture matters, lighter weight and F2.8 is greater than the extra focal length.

  • @RicochetForce

    @RicochetForce

    That is a ridiculous point. Not having 24mm is a HUGE loss. On the wide end losing 4 degrees in your field of view cuts out giant chunks of the frame. On the other end, a 24-105 owner can use the APSC mode to get to 156mm equivalent at 18MP. The Sony can give you the shots you want that the Tamron can't acquire. One stop of light means nothing for lenses destined to be on low light monsters like the A7 series.

    I just bought a 28-75 last week for video use as a hobbyist. Very impressed with the IBIS stabilization compared to my Fuji X-T3 using OIS alone. But when I heard from multiple sources that using IBIS+OIS with lenses like the 24-105 can improve stabilization even more, I got greedy. I picked up the 24-105 today but found that I'm actually getting more movement with the Sony. It's not shake, but continuous fluid movement - at least while shooting video. For example, I zoom out to 50mm on both lenses and try to hold as steady as possible at a still object 20-25 feet away. With the Tamron its very stable, with only slight fluid movement just noticeable enough that one can tell its a handheld shot. Doing the same thing with the Sony, it seems to float up and down as if its adrift on calm waters. I simply can't get the shot to remain still like with the Tamron. It's clear stabilization is working, as the movement is still fluid - but it's noticeably more "floaty" (for lack of a better term). Looking through the A7III menu, there doesn't appear to be anything that needs to be enabled. It seems IBIS+OIS is either on or off and it's only configurable using the switch on the lens. Could I be missing something?

With mine if I do a simple test by zooming out to 50mm and video a stationary object 20-25 feet away while trying to hold a steady shot, it seems the Sony is far less stable. It tends to "float" up and down whereas the Tamron holds very steady. I want to like the Sony for the better range, but stabilization for handheld video is more important to me. I have time to return one or the other, but I want to rule out user error before making a decision. Let me know. Thanks!

    @@shahedhasnat thanks for getting back to me. Yeah, I had the OSS switch enabled and can see SteadyShot as "On" and greyed out. I can definitely see a difference when its disabled. I compared the behavior with taking stills. I noticed that when taking stills, the image stabilizes even further once half pressing the shutter. It becomes rock steady. So in still mode, I see these 3 behaviors while looking through the LCD. 1. OSS disabled - Very unstable where every micro jitter can be seen 2. OSS enabled - More stable with smooth fluid like motion. Think Lava Lamp. 3. OSS enabled / Shutter half pressed - Rock steady with almost no motion. For me the 24-105 behaves like 2 all the time in video mode. The Tamron behaves somewhere between 2 and 3 while in video mode. In any case, I just returned it. I'll stick with the Tamron for now as it does quite well. Maybe I'll go to another local shop and test out a different copy before buying again. Thanks much!!

    It has image stabilization that will work with the IBIS in Sony cameras, this is a boon to folks with shaky hands or those going for long, handheld exposures. Its focal range goes from pretty wide to strongly telephoto, with corner to corner sharpness being excellent and distortions being corrected in-camera. It's suitable for almost every single application save for maybe astrophotography or really low light settings. Hence why it's "better for most people."
